Real Madrid will look to regain its early season form when it hosts Fenerbahce Ulker on Thursday in Group C. The Spanish champion started the season 4-0, but has dropped two of its last three. On the other hand, both losses came on the road and Madrid remains unbeaten at home. Madrid dominated early en route to an easy win when these teams met earlier this season is Istanbul. Axel Hervelle drilled 5 three-pointer and finished with a Euroleague career-best 23 points for Madrid that night. But the Turkish champion has been hot lately, winning three of four, including a tough road win at Partizan Igokea last week, to improve to 3-4 this season and climb to fourth place in the group standings. However head coach Bogdan Tanjevic’s squad will have a different look this week, as sharpshooter Ibrahim Kutluay and big man Semih Erden are out with injuries, while promising center Omer Asik has joined the team and could make his debut. Guard Willie Solomon leads the Fenerbahce attack and he will be the man Madrid aims to stop through the use of its playmakers, Raul Lopez and Kerem Tunceri. Madrid’s big guns come from the wings, with Louis Bullock and Charles Smith forming a dynamic tandem, that Omer Onan and James “Flight” White will try to slow down. Damir Mrsic will also match up against Bullock, though he is more likely to try and wear his opponent down via his own scoring ability. Madrid swingman Michalis Pelekanos has also been an offensive factor in recent weeks. Fenerbahce brings a battery of big men to the encounter, which it will need against Madrid center Lazaros Papadpoulos. Gasper Vidmar, Oguz Savas and newcomer Asik will get help from rebounding stud Mirsad Turkcan in the paint, though Madrid counters with Hervelle and Felipe Reyes. Fenerbahce already has two road wins this season and will go to Madrid with hopes of an upset. However the Spanish champ has been one of the strongest teams in the league this season and knows the importance of protecting its home floor. Felipe Reyes led the winners with 17 points on 7-for-10 two-pointers while Kerem Tunceri added 12 for Madrid, that already beat its opponents in Turkey earlier in the regular season. Willie Solomon led Fenerbahce with 16 points and 6 assists. Oguz Savas added 16, James White had 11, Omer Onan got 10 while Mirsad Turkcan grabbed 10 rebounds for the guests. Blagota Sekulic had 4 points in a 9-0 run that Michalis Pelekanos capped with a layup that helped Madrid to get a 26-18 lead after 10 minutes.
