THE TAKE

Real Madrid will look to regain its early season form when it hosts Fenerbahce Ulker on Thursday in Group C. The Spanish champion started the season 4-0, but has dropped two of its last three. On the other hand, both losses came on the road and Madrid remains unbeaten at home. Madrid dominated early en route to an easy win when these teams met earlier this season is Istanbul. Axel Hervelle drilled 5 three-pointer and finished with a Euroleague career-best 23 points for Madrid that night. But the Turkish champion has been hot lately, winning three of four, including a tough road win at Partizan Igokea last week, to improve to 3-4 this season and climb to fourth place in the group standings. However head coach Bogdan Tanjevic’s squad will have a different look this week, as sharpshooter Ibrahim Kutluay and big man Semih Erden are out with injuries, while promising center Omer Asik has joined the team and could make his debut. Guard Willie Solomon leads the Fenerbahce attack and he will be the man Madrid aims to stop through the use of its playmakers, Raul Lopez and Kerem Tunceri. Madrid’s big guns come from the wings, with Louis Bullock and Charles Smith forming a dynamic tandem, that Omer Onan and James “Flight” White will try to slow down. Damir Mrsic will also match up against Bullock, though he is more likely to try and wear his opponent down via his own scoring ability. Madrid swingman Michalis Pelekanos has also been an offensive factor in recent weeks. Fenerbahce brings a battery of big men to the encounter, which it will need against Madrid center Lazaros Papadpoulos. Gasper Vidmar, Oguz Savas and newcomer Asik will get help from rebounding stud Mirsad Turkcan in the paint, though Madrid counters with Hervelle and Felipe Reyes. Fenerbahce already has two road wins this season and will go to Madrid with hopes of an upset. However the Spanish champ has been one of the strongest teams in the league this season and knows the importance of protecting its home floor. The visitors may be confident in their abilities to use their depth inside to slow down Madrid in the paint, but their chances could hinge on finding a way to control both Bullock and Smith. Even if that happens, Solomon will need another big performance to carry Fener to a big road win.

Quotes Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"We only have one more win than Fenerbahce, and that has to make us aware of the difficulty of this game ahead of us. We have to win to make the one we got in Turkey good. If we lose, what we managed to do in Istanbul would be useless. They have only lost to us, Panathinaikos and AXA FC Barcelona and they have a solid team, with quality in which Willie Solomon is outstanding in almost all stats categories. He didn't play against us the first time so we know that with him, Fenerbahce will be an even more dangerous team. We have to be concentrated and play a good game, especially in defense, to keep counting games by the wins at home, where as always, the support of our crowd will be fundamental."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
“Real Madrid is a team that beat us in our home court. In that game, we played without Willie Solomon and we didn’t know how to handle the game without him. Late in the game, we recovered so many points, but it was not enough. When you are 20 points behind, it was too late to come back. They played an excellent game against Panathinaikos last week. Our situation without Ibrahim Kutluay and Semih Erden is strange. We signed Omer Asik and I hope he will continue his rising performance from Alpella in the Turkish league. This is a different competition for him, but I’m sure he will be a great help for us on rebounds and blocking shots. We will try to do our best in the game.”

Players

TUNCERI, KEREM
Real Madrid
"Compared to the game we played in the first leg in Istanbul, they have improved their level and have gotten back one of their basic players, Will Solomon. They are a team whose main threat is the outside shooting, so our backcourt players will have to push hard in defense to get the win. They only have one win less than us and I am sure they will come to Madrid with the necessary mentality to take a win that could leave them on brink of Top 16 qualification. We have to play a serious game to win after the two losses that we had in the last two games. We know that at home we normally get good results and that with the support of our fans everything is a littl easier. But it will be important not to relax at any time, maintain our tension and never allow Fenerbahce to set their pace."
SOLOMON, WILLIE
Fenerbahce Ulker
“It was really very sad for me to miss the first game in Abdi Ipekci due to injury. But now I’m okay and ready to handle the responsibility. And I believe that we can do something special if we repeat the same performance we did against Partizan last week. Real Madrid is really strong, but you always have a chance to win if you play 10 to 10. It’s my philosophy that everything can happen if you believe in yourself even when it’s really hard to happen.”
Michalis Pelekanos - Real Madrid Real Madrid took yet another step forwards to advance to the Top 16 in Group C by downing Fenerbahce Ulker 87-77 in the Spanish capital on Thursday night. Madrid improved to 6-2 and ties with AXA FC Barcelona for the second spot in Group C. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce dropped to 4-4 and is fourth in the standings. Felipe Reyes led the winners with 17 points on 7-for-10 two-pointers while Kerem Tunceri added 12 for Madrid, that already beat its opponents in Turkey earlier in the regular season. Willie Solomon led Fenerbahce with 16 points and 6 assists. Oguz Savas added 16, James White had 11, Omer Onan got 10 while Mirsad Turkcan grabbed 10 rebounds for the guests. Blagota Sekulic had 4 points in a 9-0 run that Michalis Pelekanos capped with a layup that helped Madrid to get a 26-18 lead after 10 minutes. Louis Bullock shined in the second quarter, while Reyes and a final tip-in from a recovered Alex Mumbru booste the hosts' lead to 47-33 at halftime. Fenerbahce tried to change things in the second half, but Madrid used effective man-to-man defense and a patient offense with all players involved to seal a big win.

Gasper Vidmar got Fenerbahce going with a layup that Reyes matched in the other end. Turkcan sank a mid-range jumper for a 2-4 Fenerbahce lead. Madrid kept missing open shots but managed to ajust its offense while Tunceri nailed a three-pointer. Vidmar provided a highlight with a power dunk but Reyes bettered it with a three-point play, good for a 8-6 Madrid edge. Solomon made free throws that Tunceri erased with a closer basket. Madrid kept struggling in the defensive end, as Solomon fed Savas with a layup-plus-foul. Tunceri kept pacing Madrid with a jumper that a red hot Savas matched with a driving layup. Tunceri - who else? - buried one from downtown as Madrid now started to dominate the boards. Meanwhile, Sekulic followed a jump hook with a tip-in for a 19-13 Madrid lead. Pelekanos capped a 9-0 run with an acrobatic layup, making Fenerbahce call timeout at 21-13. Solomon rescued the guests with a triple but Bullock took over with a floating jumper. Free throws by Solomon and a step-back three-pointer by Smith fixed the score at 26-18 after 10 minutes.

Will Solomon - Fenerbahce UlkerBullock got the crowd involved with a layup off a steal that Emir Preldzic quickly erased in the other end. Fenerbahce tried a young frontcourt featuring Savas, Preldzic and Omer Asik. Another youngster, Sergio Llull, made free throws for a 30-20 Madrid lead. Bullock shined with a running triple, as Fenerbahce now had troubles against Madrid's aggressive man-to-man defense. James White beat the shot clock buzzer with a corner three-pointer and Onan added a fast break layup off a steal but Madrid did not panic. Pelekanos made free throws and Axel Hervelle nailed a corner triple, good for a 37-25 Madrid lead. White scored again and Hakan Damirel added a backdoor layup to give Fenerbahce some hope, 37-29. Bullock kept pacing Madrid with a long two-pointer and Lazaros Papadopoulos added his trademark hook shot to keep Madrid way ahead, 41-31. White and Reyes traded free throws, as Madrid kept excelling in defense now. Reyes stepped up with a put-back basket while Mumbru beat the buzzer with a tip-in that made it a 14-point game, 47-33, at halftime.

Sekulic made free throws on Vidmar's fourth foul right after the break but White fed Savas for a layup while Onan added a fast break basket to get Fenerbahce within 49-37. Tunceri buried another jumper while Pelekanos nailed a triple from the right wing, good for a 54-37 Madrid margin. Reyes added a fast break layup, as Fenerbahce had troubles at both ends now. Solomon tried to change things with a mid-range jumper that Tunceri quickly matched with an easy layup. Savas scored in the low post and Solomon added an acrobatic layup to get Fenerbahce within 58-43. Savas scored around the basket but Papadopoulos provided a highlight with a power dunk. White stroke from downtown but Smith answered to keep Madrid way ahead, 62-48. Onan stepped up with a driving layup, as Fenerbahce improved it defense, making it much more aggressive through an outstanding Turkcan. The guests did not find the way to the basket however, as Madrid kept a 62-50 margin after 30 minutes.

Hervelle provided a highlight with a wild alleyoop dunk earloy in the fourth quarter but Turkcan scored around the basket for a 64-52 Fener deficit. It was make-or-break time for the guests but Madrid dominated the offensive board now. Raul Lopez drew a foul and calmly made 3 free throws but Asik scored coming off the baseline. Papadopoulos shined with a big basket in the low post that Savas bettered it with a three-point play to get the guests within 69-57. Madrid kept running its offense through Papadopoulos, who scored inside before more free throws by Lopez made it 73-57. Solomon and Hervelle traded baskets, as Fenerbahce was running out of time. Solomon stroke from downtown that Asik added a power layup for a 76-64 deficit with 4 minutes remaining. Free throws by Onan and Asik got Fenerbahce even closer, 77-67. Reyes dunked it off a steal but Onan immediately answered and Savas added a put-back layup to make it an eight-point game, 79-71. Mumbru hit a turnaround jumper to seal the outcome, as all Madrid fans were already celebrating an important win.

Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"This is a very important win for us, even when I am not very happy with our fourth quarter. We can do much better than that. Even with that, it is an important win because Fenerbahce Ulker is now two wins away in the standings. This is an important step to finish in the upper part of the group, and this is the most positive outcome for us in this game. We now had to be ready for a big Spanish League showdown against DKV Joventut this weekend."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Real Madrid deserved to win tonight. We trailed all the way in the game but we kept our options alive in the fourth quarter. The key to our loss was our bad percentage in three-pointers and long two-pointers. I am happy with the way my frontcourt played tonight, especially my younger players. They had extended playing time and showed they can be important from now on. It is difficult to win when your opponent scores 18-19 points in each quarter, especially if you play a great team like Real Madrid on the road."

Players

BULLOCK, LOUIS
Real Madrid
"Both teams had similar records entering this game and it was a tough one for us. We knew we had to stay focused against Fenerbahce and get an important lead as soon as possible. We did what we had to do that this win allows us to get ready for bigger games to come in the near future. It is always tough to play once you have recovered from a serious injury. I am doing the best I can, plus my coach and teammates are helping me a lot."
TUNCERI, KEREM
Real Madrid
"It was a tough game for us. Madrid had some advantage because they came here without Ibrahim Kutluay and Semih Erden. Even with that, they played well in the beginning but Madrid played excellent basketball in key moments of the game. That allowed us to get a safe lead in the final minutes. We won the game, and this is what matters. I wasn't especially motivated because I was facing a Turkish team. I have been playing well in the last 4-5 games, I feel in good shape and only try to help my team as much as I can."
TURKCAN, MIRSAD
Fenerbahce Ulker
"It was not an easy game for us, as it is difficult to play with you are without two key players. Even with that, we were in the game in the fourth quarter, even when we had no chances to win it. Real Madrid played very well and if they take a lead in the early going, it is a tough team to beat. Madrid deserved to win. I keep trying to do my job, grab rebounds and help my team as much as I can. It feels good to keep having the chance to become the first player to grab 1,000 rebounds in the Euroleague, it is important for me."
