THE TAKE

Cibona Zagreb hosts Fenerbahce Ulker in a crucial Group H match for both sides Thursday at the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Center in the Croatian capital. These two teams were generally considered to be the outsiders when drawn to the group that features reigning champion CSKA Moscow and last season’s third place team, Montepaschi Siean, and neither of them can afford to lose to the other if they plan to steal a Quarterfinal Playoffs spot from one of those juggernauts. Cibona started the Top 16 in style with a home win over Montepaschi, but was spanked last week at Moscow. Head coach Velimir Perasovic knows that his team must keep on winning now at home. Meanwhiel Fenerbahce is 0-2 in the Top 16 and needs a road win to make up for its home loss to CSKA. The game is a homecoming for Fener’s star swingman Gordan Giricek, who grew up with the Croatian giants and has played alongside several of its current players. Giricek, who missed the regular season due to injury, has become an important part of the attack in the Top 16. He teams with playmaker Marques Green, shooter Damir Kaan Mrsic, defensive ace Omer Onan and the athletic Devin Smith to form the Turkish champs’ backcourt. Cibona looks to Davor Kus and Earl Calloway at guards, Allan Anderson at small forward and Robert Troha off the bench for its perimeter points. The hosts boast a deep frontcourt with Niksa Prkacin, Bruni Sundov, Jared Homan and Luksa Andric, who’ll need to contend with Mirsad Turkcan, Semih Erden, Gasper Vidmar and Oguz Savas inside, while forward Emir Preldzic is a wildcard playing both forward spots for head coach Bogdan Tanjevic. Cibona is a much stronger team when it plays at home, where it has lost just once this season. However despite its youth, Fener has a pair of road wins and many players who are experienced beyond their years. The game will have a sure playoff atmosphere and plenty of tension as both teams and coaches know how damaging a loss would be to their playoff hopes. The keys could be in the backcourt. Green must be tenacious on defense against Kus, who has been a major factor in Cibona’s home success, while Anderson cannot allow Giricek to get hot and lead his team. Either way this game has all the makings of a 40-minute thriller that could be decided by the buzzer.

GAME NOTES

Cibona
  • Cibona has lost five straight road games and is 2-18 away from home over the past three Euroleague seasons.
  • Center Niksa Prkacin is on pace for the best shooting season of his lengthy Euroleague career. Prkacin has made 45 of 76 two-point shots (59.2%) so far, which is slightly more than his 59.1% for Efes Pilsen in the 2006-07 season.
  • Guard Davor Kus is averaging more than twice as many points per game at home this season (16.6 ppg.) as on the road (6.7 ppg.). He is shooting 48.1% from downtown at home compared to 20% on the road.
  • Swingman Alan Anderson has scored in double figures and grabbed a steal in six straight Euroleague games going back to last season.
Fenerbahce Ulker
  • Playmaker Marques Green has recorded a steal in every game this season. He was tied for fifth in the regular season with 2.1 steals per game.
  • Swingman Gordan Giricek has scored in double figures in 15 consecutive Euroleague games, dating back to December 2001 when he was with CSKA. Giricek has scored at least 20 in 12 of those games.
  • Giricek recorded a career-high 5 steals last week at Montepaschi.
  • Giricek’s professional career took off during five season he spent at Cibona from 1996 through 2001. During that period, he won five Croatian League championships and one Croatian Cup. Among the current Cibona players that Giricek played with at Cibona are Niksa Prkacin, Davor Kus and Branimir Longin.
  • Rebounding king Mirsad Turkcan is struggling through his worst shooting season from close range in his Euroleague career. He has made 32 of 74 two-pointers for a career-low 43.2%. He has never before averaged below 51%. On the other hand, he is 15 for 33 from downtown (45.5%), which is the second best of his career.

Quotes Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"This is another very tough game against a very experienced opponent, which means a lot for our destiny in the group. Cibona Zagreb has the tradition of playing these kinds of important games and for sure, it will be at least as tough as the first two matches for us. It’s because they need to win to have a better position in the group. For us, the situation is really difficult at the moment. We have to step up in defense for sure. The second important thing is we have to rely on it for the whole game. We need to win a game on the road to hope to reach the next stage. And I think this is the second and only chance to do it."

Players

MRSIC, DAMIR
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Unfortunately we are a little bit far away from the place that we were planning to be at the beginning of Top 16. We played consecutive matches against the top candidates for the Final Four, also this season. The Cibona Zagreb game is also another big challenge for us, especially on the road. They are a strong team that also has great support from their fans at home in Zagreb. We have to stay alive in the group and this is a kind of last train to catch. I’m sure we will play at least better than the first two games, which I think those were not a good example of our real performance."
Mirsad Turkcan - Fenerbahce UlkerFenerbahce Ulker registered its first win in Top 16 Group H by edging Cibona 55-65 at the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Center in Zagreb, Croatia on Thursday night. Both teams are now tied for third place in Group H, each with a 1-2 record, just one win away from Montepaschi Siena and CSKA Moscow, who are 2-1. Mirsad Turkcan led the winners with 20 points and 12 rebounds for his 46th Euroleague career double-double. He had 11 points in the final six minutes to help FB Ulker seal the outcome down the stretch. Gordan Giricek added 12 points against his former team, while Marques Green had 10 for Fener. Alan Anderson and Niksa Prkacin each had 12 points for Cibona. Earl Calloway added 11 and Vedran Vukusic 10 for the hosts. Anderson led a 10-2 opening run for Cibona but Turkcan and a three-pointer by Omer Onan allowed Fener to tie the game, 12-12, early in the second quarter. Cibona answered with a 9-0 run that Vedran Princ capped with a layup, enough for the hosts to keep a 27-22 halftime edge. A reverse layup by Marin Rozic kept Cibona ahead, 43-41, at the end of the third quarter. The fourth period featured 6 ties before Turkcan led a 0-11 run that allowed FB Ulker cruise to a well-deserved win.

Earl Calloway - CibonaFB Ulker struggled to find open shots in the opening minutes while Anderson got Cibona going with a fast break dunk. The guests remained scoreless for the opening three minutes and head coach Bogdan Tanjevic called a much-needed timeout to readjust his team's offense. Anderson kept pacing Cibona with a driving layup, but a tip-in by Semih Erden kept Fener within 4-2. Anderson made free throws, while Fenerbahce tried to get its frontcourt involved without much success. Calloway shined with a fast break layup and fed Jared Homan for an easy basket, good for a 10-2 Cibona lead. FB Ulker did not panic, however, as Gasper Vidmar dunked it and a three-pointer by Green brought the guests back to life. Turkcan had a huge block on Calloway, but Prkacin stepped up with his trademark jump hook. Turkcan came through with a driving layup to make it 12-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Cibona stayed true to its game plan early in the second quarter, with a patient offense looking for the extra pass. Meanwhile, FB Ulker tried to change the game rhythm with Onan, Devin Smith and Emir Preldzic together on court. Onan tied the game with a bomb from downtown, but a fast break dunk by Calloway restored a 14-12 Cibona edge. Vukusic nailed a three-pointer that made Fener call timeout at 17-12. Homan scored down low and a driving layup by Princ boosted the hosts' margin after a 9-0 run. The guests had committed 4 consecutive turnovers before Damir Mrsic Kaan scored in penetration. Anderson picked up a loose ball and put it in, but a jumper by Green kept Fener within 23-16. Rozic shined with a floating layup and free throws by Prkacin made it a double-digit game, 27-16. Oguz Savas and Rasim Basak took over with back-to-back baskets and Green beat the buzzer with a driving layup to bring FB Ulker within 27-22 at halftime.

Gordan Giricek - Fenerbahce UlkerGreen sank a jumper immediately after the break to cap a 0-8 FB Ulker run. Calloway took over with an outstanding driving layup, as Fenerbahce committed several turnovers early in the third quarter. Anderson shined with a stop-and-pop jumper, good for a 31-24 Cibona lead. Turkcan sank his trademark fallaway shot and Vidmar banked in a free throw - Fener's first in this game – to get within 4. Turkcan buried a corner triple while free throws by Giricek completed the guests' comeback, 31-32. Cibona called timeout, but Onan buried a three-pointer to cap a 0-11 Fener run. Prkacin rescued the crowd with a dunk that Giricek matched with a driving layup. Cibona found a go-to guy in Vukusic, who fired one in from downtown to tie it at 36-36. Erden and Prkacin traded free throws, but a three-point play by Calloway and a reverse layup by Rozic allowed Cibona to regain a 43-41 edge after 30 minutes.

Fenerbahce improved its defense early in the fourth quarter and a long jumper by Giricek tied it again at 43-43. Turkcan scored in the low post, but Prkacin shined with another hook shot. Erden made free throws that Anderson erased with an outstanding dunk in traffic. Giricek kept pacing FB Ulker with a driving layup and free throws, but Calloway scored in penetration. A close basket by Prkacin provided a 51-51 tie. Erden hit a turnaround jumper that Vukusic matched with a driving basket. Erden fed Turkcan for an easy layup, good for a 53-55 Fener edge with four minutes to go. Turkcan stepped up with a power layup and a turnaround jumper to practically seal the outcome, 53-59, with under two minutes remaining. Calloway missed an uncontested layup but Turkcan hit a triple that hit the rim, went up and fell down. Cibona never recovered, as FB Ulker returned home with a good-as-gold road win.

Head Coaches

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We were dominating in the first half, but finished it off with just a 5-point advantage instead of 12 or 13. In the second half we had a tough time getting to the basket and we got a bit nervous, started missing shots that we usually make on our home court. Fenerbahce played a solid game all the way and got us into foul trouble early in the third and fourth quarter. But the real problems were on the offensive end. When you score 55 points at home, you cannot win a game."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We were lucky that we finished the first half only 5 points back because it wasn’t a gap we couldn’t make up for in the second half. We had 12 turnovers and struggled on both ends of the floor, but in the second half our defense was a lot better. I’m really satisfied with how Gordan Giricek reacted because there were a lot of emotions bothering him. In the end, he won the game for us alongside Mirsad Turkcan, and Marques Green, who decreased the number of our turnovers in the second half. This win gives us a glimpse of hope that we could still reach the playoffs."

Players

CALLOWAY, EARL
Cibona
"It was a tough game. Now we have to win two road games, but we’ll take it as a challenge. Our chances are great, why shouldn’t we win in Turkey and Italy? I know we only won one road game, but it feels different now, and who knows what might happen in a single game."
TURKCAN, MIRSAD
Fenerbahce Ulker
"To be honest, I didn’t expect us to react so well since we lost to Mersin last weekend. But maybe that game made us stronger for this one and I’m really happy that we won in Zagreb because now we have two home games coming up and a chance of making it to the playoffs. Still, I was expecting a better game from Cibona. They need a few more excellent players to back up Prkacin and Kus, who showed last year in Malaga just how great he can be. That’s why we paid more attention to Cibona’s backcourt and decided not to double-team Prkacin."
