THE TAKE

Two modern classics in European club basketball are ready to battle in already a pivotal game in Group J, as Unics welcomes Power Electronics Valencia on Tuesday at 17:00 CET. Unics registered a road win against Galatasaray Cafe Crown and would most probably lock a playoff spot by winning its three home games. Meanwhile, Power VLC registered its first-ever Eurocup home loss against Hapoel Jerusalem. Power VLC had won 33 of its 34 Eurocup home games in Valencia, registering a 85-85 tie against DKV Joventut in the second leg of the 2005 ULEB Cup eighthfinals. As such, Power VLC needs a road win to keep most of its options alive. It will be a special game for Unics superstar Marko Popovic, who played in Valencia several years ago. Popovic has been unstoppable so far this season playing alongside Unics playmaker Terrell Lyday. Petr Samoylenko offers defense and court vision off the bench. Lyday faces a critical matchup against Nando De Colo, in a direct fight to control theg ame rhythm. Meanwhile, Samoylenko will see minutes against Marko Marinovic and Jose Simeon. Marinovic can change any change with his quickness and deep range. Popovic will not have it easy against Rafa Martinez, right at the prime of his career. Unics is really deep at both wings, as Popovic can get help from streak shooter Igor Zamanskiy, experienced scorer Saulius Stombergas or small forward Artem Kuzyakin. Stombergas is set to see extended playing time to guard Victor Claver, a natural-born mismatch due to his ballhandling, explosiveness and jumping skills. Stombergas, however, is a tough defender that can put Claver in trouble in offense, too. Zamanskiy is ready to guard effective shooter Thomas Kelati. The battle in the paint will be critical, as both teams have two of the most talented frontcourts in the competition. Unics relies on Kresimir Loncar, Maciej Lampe and Vladimir Veremeenko, three great all-around players with deep range, post skills and size. Lampe is ready for an important matchup against Kosta Perovic. Matt Nielsen and Florent Pietrus will have to use their experience and toughness against Veremeenko. Meanwhile, Serhiy Lishchuk is the perfect player to guard Loncar due to his timing and defense. Unics must play up-tempo and get its battery of big men involved to get an important win. Power VLC must run its offense through Claver and Martinez and try to lock the defensive board. Expect one of the best games that the Eurocup Last 16 can offer in this 2009-10 season.

"I’m sure the game against Power Electronics Valencia in Kazan will be a very difficult one for us, so as our opponents are very strong. The team is well-built and well-trained, has got a good line-up and good rotation, and, what is very important, is able to play different defense systems. It happened so, that Power Electronics Valencia lost to Hapoel at home, and this will increase their motivation to win here in Kazan. As for us, we will do our best in order to show good basketball and to please our fans with a nice victory."

"Power Electronics Valencia is actually one of the strongest teams of Spain, and they won the ULEB Cup, which is now called Eurocup, and more than that, it has experienced competing in Euroleague as well. It’s a very experienced and well-built team, I know this perfectly well, because I used to play for it. The coming match will be of great importance for both clubs with the view of qualifying to the next round."

Veremeenko got the crowd involved with a huge dunk off a steal and soon added an alleyoop layup to make Power VLC call timeout at 22-28. Perovic rescued the guests with free throws and Nielsen added a turnaround jumper to restore a double-digit Power VLC lead, 22-32. Loncar stepped up with consecutive baskets and Lyday added a driving layup to bring Unics within 31-36 at halftime.

Vladimir Veremeenko - Unics Kazan (photo unics.ru)Coach Neven Spahija placed Lishchuk and Nielsen together on court early in the third quarter, each with 3 fouls. Unics immediately opted to get its big men involved in the low post. Martinez and De Colo struck from downtown to boost the guests' lead to 33-42. Lyday downed a three-pointer but Martinez and De Colo fueled a 0-8 run highlighted by Flo Pietrus' alleyoop dunk for a 36-50 Power VLC margin. Lyday nailed his second triple and Popovic added a layup-plus-foul to bring Unics back to life, 42-50. Martinez and Kelati stepped up with back-to-back three-pointers, as Unics struggled in defense and allowed many points in transition. Veremeenko followed an open triple with an alleyoop layup and soon added a 11-meter bomb from almost midcourt to give Unics some hope, 50-58, after 30 minutes. Stombergas sank free throws early in the fourth quarter, as Power VLC had been scoreless for almost 4 minutes now. Lishchuk stepped up with a two-handed dunk but Loncar scored twice in the paint for a 56-60 Unics deficit with over 5 minutes left. De Colo downed a triple off a Power VLC timeout and Martinez added free throws but Popovic kept Unics within 60-65 with 3 minutes to go. Lyday struck from downtown but free throws by Martinez and a driving layup by Nielsen sealed the outcom, 63-70. Unics kept trying but it was too little, too late for the hosts.

Head Coaches

CHOMICIUS, VALDEMARAS
Unics
"Valencia is one of the strongest team in the Eurocup, and they have just proved this fact in the match. They were safer on defense, more active and accurate on offense, and as a result they have won the game. We had some chances to level the score at the end of the fourth quarter, though we didn't use them. If we had scored all our chances, it would have been another game. In my opinion, not all of my players met the high level of today's game."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Power Electronics
"I congratulate my team for the victory. It was a very tough game, and I'm pleased we have won it. Unics is a well-built team, one of the strongest in the Eurocup. We knew that before the game and therefore took our opponents seriously. It so happened so that we had experienced some problems the previous week: we lost two games, to Hapoel at home in the Eurocup as well as to Valladolid in the Spanish League. However,I believed in my players and I knew them to be strong personalities, and today was a good chance for them to show their character. Actually, they made good use of this chance and managed to win this very difficult and a very important game."

Players

VEREMEENKO, VLADIMIR
Unics
"I'm really upset with the result of the game. I believe we've lacked some luck. All match long we were coming back and at last we had a chance to change the scenario, but we didn't use it. We didn't manage to score a number of our possessions, while our opponents took good use of theirs. As a result, we lost points at home."
NIELSEN, MATT
Power Electronics
"We expected that the game against Unics in Kazan would not be an easy stroll for us, and this match has just proved our expectations. It was very difficult to get this away victory and I believe we have done it thanks to our sporting character. Actually, it was our character that helped us not to let the victory escape in the last quarter of the game."
