THE TAKE

If Zadar looks for its first win in Last 16 Group J on Tuesday when it hosts Unics Kazan. Zadar already has lost one game at home after dropping to 0-2 with a 76-84 home defeat against Benetton last week. Head coach Denis Pleslic's club made 63% from two-point range, committed just 8 turnovers and forced Benetton to lose the ball 19 times. But the Croatian champion also hit just 6 of 29 (21%) three-pointers, was outrebounded 31-21 and allowed Benetton to make 14 of 21 (67%) from three-point range as well as 55% on two-pointers. Center Todor Gecevski led the way with 24 points and 5 steals, while forward Hrvoje Peric scored 13 points and guard Damir Rancic had 11 points. Guard Rok Stipcevic made just 1 of 9 from the field for just 2 points though he had 8 assists. Reserve center Deyan Ivanov struggled to just 2 of 7 from the field for 6 points and 4 rebounds - well below his averages of 13 and 9 respectively. Pleslic could use more scoring from Stipcevic and must hope that Ivanov rebounds from his sub par game as he could be a big weapon against the bigger opponent. Unics Kazan came back from its first loss of the competition to move to 1-1 with a 72-57 home win against Turk Telekom. Head coach Aco Petrovic's Unics dominated Turk in nearly every phase of the game, limiting Telekom to 45% from two-point range, allowing just 2 of 9 (22%) three-pointers, making 28 of 34 (82%) free throws compared to just 11 of 17 (65%) for Turk. Kazan also forced 20 turnovers, though Petrovic's men lost the ball 18 times themselves. One area Petrovic would like to see improvement in was his rebounding as Unics was outrebounded 30-24, including 12 Turk offensive rebounds. Guard Terrell Lyday returned to the lineup though he scored just 5 points. But forward Tariq Kirksay was still out injured and Petrovic once again struggled to find an adequate replacement for him. Center Kressimir Loncar came off the bench for 20 points and forward Vladimir Veremeenko had a perfect shooting game - 5 of 5 from two-point range and 4 of 4 free throws - for 14 points. But no other player scored in double digits. And besides Veremeenko the other starters combined for just 22 points. And guard Marko Popovic made just 1 of 8 shots and missed all 5 three-pointers in scoring 8 points. Having Kirksay back in the lineup will be very important for Petrovic as Kazan looks to improve to 2-1.

Ivanov's three-point play upped Zadar's advantage to 11-5 before Lyday nailed a triple to bring Unics within 11-10. The long range shooting continued with Hrvoje Peric and Stipcevic nailing downtown shots for a 19-14 Zadar advantage. After another Lyday long ball, Ivanov's next basket gave Zadar a 23-17 lead. Stipcevic score last to give the hosts a 23-19 lead after one period. After Peric and Toni Prostran hit the first baskets of the second quarter, the Zadar edge hit double digits, 29-19. Unics fought its way back into the game with Popovic hitting a long ball and Igor Zamanskiy and Veremeenko making back-to-back baskets as the difference was trimmed to 33-30. Gecevski answered with 6 straight points for Zadar and it was 39-32. Unics held the hosts scoreless on four consecutive possessions while Zamanskiy threw down a dunk and Popovic's layup finished a 0-8 run for the first Unics lead of the game, 39-40. Ivanov foul shots stopped the run but Loncar's basket gave Unics a 41-42 advantage at the break.

Rancic opened the second half by burying back-to-back triples. He added another basket before Stipcevic knocked down his own three-point shot as Zadar busted out on a 13-4 run to a 54-46 advantage. Loncar scored 3 straight baskets in response, the third coming on a dunk of an offensive rebound to trim the deficit to 54-52. But after Loncar was called for a technical foul, Stipcevic made a free throw and Gecevski hit a layup for a 57-52 Zadar lead. Alexey Zhukanenko answered with a dunk and Popovic evened the game at 59-59 with a triple. After Gecevski and Zhukanenko traded three-point shots, Prostran converted a three-point play. But Popovic and Lyday combined for 3 free throws and the game was even at 65-65 going into the fourth quarter. A pair of Marc Jackson free throws and Zhukanenko's steal and layup gave Unics a 65-69 lead to start the final quarter. Juby Johnson and Ivanov answered with back-to-back three-point shots to push Zadar back in front 71-70. Ivanov hit another basket for a 75-72 lead only to see Zamanskiy make it 75-76. And after Gecevski and Peric scored for a 79-76 Zadar lead, Popovic knotted the game again with a triple. Stipcevic nailed back-to-back triples and Gecevski's score gave Zadar an 87-81 advantage with 2 minutes left. A Lyday three brought Unics to within 87-85. But in the final minute Stipcevic twice made 2 of 2 foul shots for a 91-86 lead. Popovic's free throws cut the margin to 91-88 but Johnson gave Zadar the win with a dunk, althuogh Lyday hit a late three to limit the damage in scoring for later tie-breakers.

Head Coaches

SAGADIN, ZMAGOSLAV
Zadar
"I'm very pleased with our victory. Tonight the ice was broken and there is no more nervousness. There are more things that need to be fixed. Our defense and rebounding are not at the best and we will have to work on that. I hope in a week or two the situation will be better."
PETROVIC, ACO
Unics
"I want to congratulate my colleague. This is a good beginning of his work in a new club. We knew what was waiting for us. We hoped we would win this game because we had more players in our rotation. In our league, we allow fewer points than other teams, and tonight we allowed 93 points. We played very bad defense. We couldn't do anything that we planed. I have to analyze this game to see what happened."

Players

IVANOV, DEJAN
Zadar
"I'm satisfied with this victory. This is a very big thing for us. We played really well. This was a very good game for all of us. We played like a complete team and not like individuals and with that kind of play we will go on."
POPOVIC, MARKO
Unics
"We are known as a team that gives up small numbers of points and in this game Zadar scored a lot of points against us. We lost by 2 points, which is a similar to what happened in Treviso. We have to win our next games at home. We played very bad. We didn't have a continuum in play. Our game went up and down and if you play like this, you cannot win. We didn't have concentration through all 40 minutes and it cost us."
