THE TAKE

Turk Telekom faces a critical showdown at home against Benetton Basket in Last 16 Group J as it tries to remain among the leaders in the race for the Final Eight. Turk Telekom dropped to 1-1 with a 72-57 loss at Unics Kazan. Head coach Ercument Sunter's team did little right, shooting 45% from two-point range, hitting just 2 of 9 (22%) three-pointers, making just 11 of 17 (65%) free throws compared to 28 of 34 (82%) for Unics, and committing 20 turnovers. Forward Kennedy Winston was the leading scorer with 13 points and center Erwin Dudley chipped in 9 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. No starter scored in double digits and the starting five combined for just 18 points. Forward Michael Wright scored just 3 points - 11.5 points below his average coming into the game. The one positive to take from the game for Turk was outrebounding Unics 30-24 including grabbing 12 offensive rebounds. Sunter will likely tell his troops to forget the game as soon as possible and try to get his team thinking positively. Should Telekom lose and Unics beat Zadar, Turk would be two games behind Benetton and one game behind Kazan with losses to both teams. Benetton Basket improved to 2-0 with a 76-84 victory at Zadar. Head coach Oktay Mahmuti's squad could not stop Zadar inside - 63% from two-point range - and forced just 8 turnovers while giving up the ball 19 times. But Benetton did hold Zadar to just 6 of 29 (21%) on three-pointers and outrebounded the host team 31-21. Benetton also rebounded from its poor shooting showing against Unics (36% from two-point range) as it made 55% from close range as well as a blistering 14 of 21 (67%) from beyond the stripe. Guard Gary Neal drained 5 three-pointers in pouring in 23 points, while guard Bobby Dixon knocked down 4 triples for 12 points and forward Matteo Soragna hit 3 long balls. Center Sandro Nicevic collected 17 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. And center CJ Wallace chipped in 11 points and 12 rebounds in the winning effort. Benetton stands an outstanding chance of moving to 3-0 if it can hit 67% from long range. But Mahmuti does not want to have to rely on that.

Gary Neal - Benetton Basket (Photo: bckhimki.ru)Benetton Basket Treviso took a big step towards the Final Eight with a resounding 67-99 win over Turk Telekom in the Turkish capital on Tuesday. Benetton improved to 3-0 in the Last 16, while dropping Telekom to 1-2. The two sides meet again in their next Eurocup fixture in two weeks in Italy. The visitors led from start to finish, taking their first double-digit advantage midway through the opening period and never looking back. Gary Neal paced Benetton with 23 points and 3 steals, CJ Wallace recorded 22 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals, Sandro Nicevic scored 15, Matteo Soragna 13 and Bobby Dixon had 11 points and 5 assists. Michael Wright paced Telekom with 15 points and Erwin Dudley added 10 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.

It was an ideal start for the visitors as Neal quickly scored the game’s opening basket and Wallace added a triple. More than two-and-a-half minutes passed before Dudley scored on the offensive glass for Telekom’s first points. Kris Lang and Dudley cut the gap to 1 before Wallace’s second three-pointer was followed by Neal’s first to make it 6-13 midway through the opening period. Andrea Renzi came off the bench to stretch Benetton’s run to 0-8 before Kennedy Winston made a pair of free throws for the hosts. Soragna struck from downtown to up the Benetton advantage to 10 points. Points from Wright and Serkan Erdogan did not change much as Dashaun Wood made it 14-24 after 10 minutes. Dudley scored to try to ignite a Telekom comeback at the start of the second period, but Benetton responded with 9 unanswered points for a 16-33 lead. Baris Ozcan’s triple and a pair of Wright baskets inside only got Telekom within 12. Bobby Dixon and Soragna put Benetton back up by 17 before Rod Blakney’s steal and layup and a Dudley basket got the hosts within 31-44 at the half.

Benetton came out strong for the second half. Soragna started with a pair of free throws and Nicevic buried a mid-range jumper as the lead reached 17 again. Blakney fueled a 6-0 spurt with 4 points and an assist, but Wallace’s three-pointer and a Nicevic three-point play made it 37-54. Wood increased the lead to 19. Wright and Winston’s points for the hosts were matched by Nicevic and Neal, whose triple ended the third period at 51-68. Dixon fired in a three to make it a 20-point game at the start of the fourth quarter. Tutku Acik did the same for Telekom, but hope was beginning to run out for the hosts. The Benetton lead would reach 28 when Domen Lorbek drilled a three-pointer and Wallace made it 30 as the visitors celebrated the win before the final buzzer.

Head Coaches

SUNTER, ERCUMENT
Turk Telekom
"I was not able to identify my team on the court tonight. We did nothing in defense and also in offence. This is a real shock for us. Benetton Treviso did everything better than us in all the details in the game and they deserved the win with big difference. Now we have our chances weakened. We have to win all the rest of our three matches to qualify to the next stage. But the reality is that we have a very difficult task."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Benetton Basket
"We had an excellent start to the game and took the momentum in our hands and kept it until the end of the match. We never gave them easy baskets and that was the key for winning the game. I think we had a very important win. But to give a special meaning to this win, we have to add more victories in our group. Now we have to get ready for the next games."

Players

ACIK, TUTKU
Turk Telekom
"It was like a nightmare for us. We started the game very bad and it went the same way until the last second. We couldn’t balance the game in defense or in offence. They really played tough and did things better than us in offence. Now we have to work very hard to compensate for this loss."
NICEVIC, SANDRO
Benetton Basket
"We were expecting a very tough game in Ankara against Turk Telekom. I think they are a little bit shocked the way we started the game. We played great defense and also found the best options to score on offence too. We never let them recover their game the rest of the match. Honestly, we never expected to win the game with that big a difference. I hope we keep playing this way to take the top spot in the group."
