THE TAKE

Red-hot Unicaja puts its six-game winning streak and second place in Group C on the line when it hosts CSKA Moscow on Wednesday in Malaga, Spain. Unicaja's (7-2) last defeat came at the hands of CSKA (6-3) in November. David Andersen and J.R. Holden scored 21 each to lead CSKA to an 87-63 win in Moscow. CSKA was also the last team to defeat Unicaja at Malaga's J.M. Martin Carpena Sports Palace. Unicaja has won nine in a row at home since falling to CSKA in December 2004. In that game, Marcus Brown scored 24 points to lead CSKA to victory, but now he'll be on the other side of the matchup, leading Unicaja on his new home floor. During its six-game win streak, Unicaja has topped the 80-point barrier five times, but is now set to face the toughest defense in the league, and possibly without forward Walter Hermmann, who leads the Euroleague three-point accuracy rankings, but was hurt early in last week's road win at Ulker. Herrmann returned to practice but his participation against CSKA will be a game-time decision. His scoring could certainly help Unicaja. CSKA has allowed only 66.4 points per game this season. CSKA's Andersen (14.4 ppg., 7.8 rpg.) had few problems against Daniel Santiago (12.1 ppg., 67.6% 2FG) in their last encounter, but the 2.16-meter Unicaja center is coming off his best game of the season – 20 points and 13 rebounds last week against Ulker. December MVP Jorge Garbajosa (17.2 ppg., 7.1 rpg.), second in the Euroleague in scoring, will be guarded by a several different players, including Andersen, Matjaz Smodis (9.3 ppg.) and Sergei Panov (7 ppg.), in an attempt to wear down the star, who has scored fewer than 15 points only once all season. Brown (13.6 ppg.) will get a chance to go up against the player who replaced him in at CSKA, Trajan Langdon (10.8 ppg.), in an interesting matchup. Holden (11.3 ppg.), who is coming off a solid performance last week with 25 points, will match up with Pepe Sanchez and Carlos Cabezas (10.2 ppg.), who has scored in double figures in four of his last five games, assuming he's fit. This game will be a test of CSKA's defense and Unicaja's attack. CSKA has the fireworks to try and outscore Unicaja in a shoot-out, but will need David Vanterpool (9.5 ppg., 2.5 spg.) and Theo Papaloukas (8.6 ppg, 4.1 apg.) to play big roles in the backcourt. Vanterpool has travelled and is expected to play after coming off a foot injury. His form will be key in helping CSKA cover as many bases as possible against one of the hottest teams in Europe.

Pepe Sanchez answered in the other end but Andersen shined again with a three-point play. Holden slashed for a layup and a 16-17 CSKA edge after 10 minutes.

Rodriguez put Unicaja back in charge with a put-back basket but Holden answered from downtown for a 18-20 CSKA edge. Santiago tied the game with a hook shot which Theo Papaloukas matched with a driving layup, as the game turned into a physical battle. Holden shined with a basket-plus-foul which Andersen followed with yet another basket to force an Unicaja timeout at 20-27. Garbajosa tried to wake the hosts up with a three but Vanterpool copied him in the other end. Rodriguez ran the break to find a three-point play, as CSKA quickly called timeout. Rodriguez stayed on fire, bringing Unicaja within 28-30. Langdon came to the rescue for CSKA with a three and Vanterpool beat the shot clock with another bomb from downtown. Garbajosa nailed his second three and Jesus Lazaro scored off a steal to bring Unicaja within 35-36 at halftime.

Holden came back strong after the break, as he hit a jumper which Vanterpool followed with free throws for a 35-40 CSKA lead. Risacher followed a basket in penetration with a turnaround jumper while Sanchez scored around the basket to bring Unicaja within 41-42. Andersen came to the rescue with a four-meter jumper while Papaloukas came off the bench and quickly stepped up with a driving layup. Sanchez erased with a layup and Brown fed Santiago for an alleyoop basket, but Vanterpool hit a tough jumper to keep CSKA ahead at 45-49. Brown made a short jumper which he followed with a three off a screen to put Unicaja in charge, 50-49. Smodis buried a jumper while Papaloukas beat the shot clock with a put-back jumper to make CSKA regain the lead, 50-53, at the end of the third quarter.

Langdon fired in a jumper for a 50-55 CSKA lead, after a 0-6 run. Garbajosa answered with a tough layup which Papaloukas matched with a driving basket. Garbajosa fired back with a six-meter jumper to bring Unicaja within 54-57. Holden took over with a huge finger-roll layup , as Unicaja called timeout at 54-59. Brown followed a driving layup with a three to tie the game, 59-59. Once again Brown made free throws while Sanchez capped a 0-10 run witha big three, as CSKA called timeout at 63-59. Smodis stepped up with a tip-in which Rodriguez erased with a driving layup. Brown made free throws for a 67-61 Unicaja lead with 1.47 to go. CSKA was not done, Smodis hit a baseline jumper and Langdon fired in a three to bring the guests within 67-66 with 30.4 seconds remaining. Langdon missed a key shot while Rodriguez made free throws with 14.1 seconds to go. It all came down to the final play, in which Langdon buried a seven-meter three with 4.6 seconds to force overtime, 69-69.

Langdon hit another three early in the extra period to give CSKA a 69-72 lead. Brown answered with a driving layup and made free throws soon after for a 73-72 Unicaja lead with 3 minutes remaining. Unicaja finally managed to slow Langdon while Brown - who else? - hit a short jumper to make CSKA call timeout at 75-72. Holden missed free throws with 1.32 to go and Garbajosa made 1 of 2 attempts for a 76-72 Unicaja edge with 1.12 remaining. Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"A great game. Maybe not great to watch for the purists but perfect for the fans to enjoy and the teams to gain valuable experience. CSKA played good defense but we went from less to more and we played smart. We managed to adjust our physical level to the game and we showed our character as a team. We are proud for having defeated CSKA because they are a team of good players that know how to play as a group. Pietrus was decisive on defense. Maybe we allowed too much to CSKA when Langdon hit that triple, but we showed we are a solid team after that."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"It was a tough game between two good teams and Unicaja's good moments in the last period decided the final outcome, especially with their pressure on defense. The key of the game was Pietrus, who maybe didn't score, but did an amazing job on defense. We didn't use our open shots either and that caused a new loss for us. Unicaja has to travel to Athens now and maybe that helps us recover the second place in the group but I think that the most important thing is getting to the Top 16, as all groups are very balanced. Unicaja is an important team in Europe with great coaches, players and fans. They will do something big."

Players

BROWN, MARCUS
Unicaja
"Tonight we played very well in a game that was extremely important for us, in order to reach the qualification for the Top 16, and also at an emotional level for me. CSKA is a great team with a great coach that has many options on offense. That makes our win even more valuable."
