THE TAKE

Unics Kazan (4-1) hosts Cedevita Zagreb (3-2) Tuesday night at the Basket Hall in Russia in a game that features the top two teams in Group I in their closing game of the Last 16. With both squads already qualified for the quarterfinals, they will now look to gain an edge in the next stage by finishing in first place in the group standings. A victory would suffice for the hosts, but Cedevita must win by more than 18 points if it wants to be crowned group champion. In fact, Kazan can lose by up to 18 and still be the group champion and host the decisive second leg in the upcoming total points quarterfinals series. The visitors have plenty of offensive firepower in the backcourt, with guards Dontaye Draper and Bracey Wright complementing each other well, and forward Damjan Rudez capabale of exploding on any given night with a varied arsenal of post moves and deep range. The recent return to form of Marino Bazdaric after an injury only adds to head coach Aleksandar Petrovic’s arsenal. For Kazan, it all starts with talented guard Terrell Lyday, who can dish it out, hit from deep range and even hang with the bangers near the rim. Marko Popovic is a difference-maker as he looke to return to his elite form from the start of the season before missing time with an injury. Playmaker Petr Samoylenko is a proven commodity and Zakhar Pashutin is a consistent three-point threat. Corsley Edwards has been solid in the paint for the visitors and will face one of the competition’s deepest frontcourts. Kazan can go with multiple formations with Maciej Lampe, Slavko Vranes and Hasan Rizvic at the center position, and forward Ricky Minard is coming off a 19-point, 4-rebound, 4-assist performance in Week 5. Vladimir Veremeenko is also a solid contributor, especially on the boards, so Cedevita will need to showcase its accuracy this time, and execute flawlessly on its pick-and-roll game. Look for the visitors to spread the floor with their shooters and for Unics to hit the boards hard, as a clash of style awaits in Kazan.

Unics
"We expect to have a very close clash against a very serious opponent, whom we respect a lot. The main task for us will be to have the right mood for the game and do our best on court. Since our opponents shoot very well from the perimeter, we will have to be concentrated on defense and not give them a chance to score easy balls. In other words, we will try our best to play the way we can to please our spectators with an IQ basketball."
PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Cedevita Zagreb
"A hard game is in front of us, but we are calm because already we secured quarterfinals, like Unics too. Unics have a good roster, with some of the best players in the Eurocup this year, and we came without Edwards, Krstic and Draper, all with health problems, but we remember the game in Thessaloniki against Aris in the first part of Eurocup when we had the same problems and players who don't play much almost won the game. We are in finish of Adriatic league where we want to advance to the Final Four so this game we will use for tactics."

"I believe that to beat Cedevita we should be playing better than we did against Gran Canaria. Cedevita is a very good and well-balanced team. It will certainly be not an easy stroll for both sides. We hope, that we will be able to show our best basketball, and there is no doubt, that we will play for the victory."
PRINC, VEDRAN
Cedevita Zagreb
"We did our job already last week against Hemofarm, so we are in a good mood to face Unics. I will play againstmy good friend Marko Popovic and I hope that the fans in Kazan enjoy a good game. We have a shortened roster for this game but sometimes that's a good reason for the rest of the team to step up. I hope it happens against Unics."
Bracey Wright - Cedevita (photo kkcedevita.hr)Cedevita hung on for a marquee victory over Unics Kazan, but the hosts still finished first in Group I thanks to a tiebreaker. Both teams finished the Top 16 with 4-2 records, however Kazan’s 76-94 win over Cedevita last month in Zagreb proved to be the difference that kept head coach Evgeny Pashutin’s men in first place. Kazan will next face Pepsi Caserta in the two-game total-points Quarterfinals starting March 23 for a spot in the Eurocup Finals in Treviso, Italy. Cedevita meets Asefa Estudiantes in the quarters. Unics led by double figures in the third quarter, but Vedran Vukusic and Bracey Wright shined in the fourth to lift Cedevita ahead and the visitors made their free throws down the stretch to hold on to the win. Wright netted 27 points to lead Cedevita, Marino Bazdaric added 20, Vukusic had 19 and 8 rebounds and Vedran Princ scored 12 and dished 4 assist for the winners. Kelly McCarty and Ricky Minard scored 21 each to lead Unics, Maciej Lampe netted 13 and Zakhar Pashutin scored 10 and dished 7 assists in defeat.

Both teams missed on their opening possessions, but McCarty then put Kazan on the scoreboard and Princ hit from downtown for the guests. The lead switched sides a few times until McCarty and Minard connected on back-to-back three-pointers for a 12-5 lead. Vukusic took charge for Cedevita and cut the gap to 3. Wright completed the comeback with free throws to tie the game at 16-16. Kazan continued to go through the Cedevita defense and stack up points, however Wright paced the visitors with 8 first-quarter points and tied the game at 22-22 after 10 minutes. Wright got some help from Franko Kastropil and Robert Troha to make it 22-28 early in the second quarter. Pashutin and Igor Zamanskiy teamed with Minard on an 11-0 run to put Unics ahead once more. The hosts hung on to the lead and when Minard connected from behind the arc, it was 40-34. Cedevita tightened its defense and Bazdaric from the line and Wright from close range made it a minimal 40-38 difference at the break.

Marko Popovic opened the second half with a triple for Unics, but Mazdaric matched him to keep it close. Free throws from Zamanskiy and Minard followed by a Lampe slam put Unics up 53-45. And McCarty stretched the lead to 62-52 shortly before the end of the quarter. Wright made it 64-56 heading into the fourth quarter, but it seemed the momentum was with Unics. Vukusic and Wright scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter to bring Cedevita back into the thick of things. Dino Butorac made it a 2-point game as the arena quieted. McCarty gave the hosts breathing room and Pashutin rescued Kazan after a triple from Wright. McCarty made it 75-68 midway through the fourth quarter. Bazdaric and Vukusic came right back with clutch triples and then Vukusic remained the go-to guy with baskets to tie the game and then put Cedevita ahead 76-78. Popovic tied the score only for Bazdaric to nail a triple. McCarty narrowed the gap to 80-82, but Princ and Bazdaric went 6 for 6 from the line in the final minute, not letting Kazan climb ahead.

"The game was very much alike the previous game against Gran Canaria. And it once again proved that much work still remains for us. I didn’t like the way my team played in defense, and a number of players seemed to refuse to defend their guards. It happened that we seemed to be less focused on the game due to the fact the result had no obvious importance. As a result, we lost. The result shows that one should play their best in every single game and treat every single opponent very seriously with the view to preserve the winning spirit, which is of great importance in the coming games."
PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Cedevita Zagreb
"We knew before the game that the result would bear a little significance for both teams, though it was very important for my team to win this game. We are newcomers to the Eurocup and it was a good opportunity for my team to experience Unics. We played without two of our best players, but the rest of the guys had the fighting spirit and fought until the end. We managed to score a number of crucial baskets and didn’t miss from the perimeter. A coach is supposed to not be surprised when his team wins, unlike me now, since I’m really surprised that we beat Unics. I consider Unics a very serious opponent and one of the strongest teams in the Eurocup and I hope to meet them in Treviso.”
