THE TAKE

One team will take over early control of Group C as both hosts Benetton Basket Treviso and Khimki Moscow come into the showdown at 1-0. Head coach Oktay Mahmuti's Benetton collected a hard-fought 77-72 road win against Besiktas Cola Turka. Treviso shot 50% from the floor, while holding Besiktas to just 41% as Benetton charged back from a 13-point half-time deficit and down 16 point in the third. Center Sandro Nicevic led the way with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocked shots and Eurocup Week 1 MVP honors. Guard Domen Lorbek and forward Radoslav Rancik both scored 14 points off Mahmuti's bench and guard Gary Neal tallied 13 points. Mahmuti has to be happy knowing that he has players who can fill it up coming off the bench. But he cannot be happy about the starting trio of center Judson Wallace, guard Bobby Dixon and guard Matteo Soragna combining for just 12 points in over 60 minutes of action. If that happens again, Benetton can forget about improving to 2-0 in the group. Khimki Moscow is loaded and used that depth in cruising past Le Havre 79-55 at home. Head coach Kestutis Kemzura saw four players score in double figures with guard Carlos Delfino pacing the Russian squad with 17 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Center Maciej Lampe added 15 points while forward Jorge Garbajosa came off the bench for 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. And guard Vitaly Fridzon scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Kemzura liked that his team shot 53% from the floor and that the defense held Le Havre to 33% shooting for the game. But Khimki forced just 10 turnovers while giving the ball up 15 times. And Moscow made just 11-of-17 (65%) from the foul stripe. If the game is close down the stretch, Khimki's troubles at the free throw line could come back to haunt it.

Players

DIXON, BOBBY
Benetton Basket
"This is a fundamental game for the group balance and for us as well, as a team. We now have a series of home games ahead of us and we need to collect wins on those. We are facing Khimki, which is a truly solid team which could perform in the Euroleague with no problems at all. But they will only have five players on the court at the same time, just like us, so until the final buzzer goes on, we will have to think about playing our game."
Benetton Treviso moved to the top spot in Group C by topping Khimki Moscow 77-59 on Tuesday. Benetton struggled early, but Gary Neal sparked a 10-2 run in the first period and Rado Rancik and Neal completed a 13-2 charge in the second period to give the hosts a 35-31 lead by halftime. Bobby Dixon scored twice in a 9-0 third-period run as Benetton put the game away early. Neal finished with 24 points and Week 1 MVP Sandro Nicevic added 18 for the winners, who improved to 2-0. Jorge Garbajosa paced Khimki with 11 points and 10 rebounds against his former team. Mike Wilkinson scored 12 for Khimki, Maciej Lampe added 11 and Carlos Delfino 10.

Khmiki started strong winning the opening tip and scoring on its first possession through Wilkinson. Garbajosa showed he sill felt at home in Treviso with a three on the next trip downcourt and soon a Kelly McCarty basket and a Wilkinson layup completed a 0-9 start before Neal finally got the hosts on the scoreboard. Neal added another layup as Khumki cooled down and the game pace quieted. Garbajosa hit from downtown again, but back-to-back threes from Judson Wallace and Neal narrowed the gap and Rancik soon added a basket to complete a 10-2 run that tied the game at 16-16. After McCarty made a free throw, Neal gave Benetton its first lead to end the period at 18-17. Khimki surged back ahead as Delfino and Lampe combined for 8 unanswered points early in the second period. Neal helped jumpstart the Treviso attack and Dixon hit a three and scored in transition as the hosts regained the lead. Rancik and Neal completed a 13-2 charge that gave Benetton a 32-27 lead. An Andrea Renzi triple increased the lead to 7 with a three. Delfino scored from downtown to make it 35-31 by halftime.

Milt Palacio scored hit only basket of the game to cut the gap to 2, but Nicevic and Neal pushed the lead up to 39-33. Lampe scored inside, but Benetton was set to take over. Neal scored a three-point play and Dixon added a pair of baskets in a 9-0 run as Benetton made it 48-35. Wallace would soon increase the lead to 16. Wilkinson helped Khimki get back to 11 before a Neal free throw made it 56-44 heading into the fourth quarter. A pair of Vitaly Frizdon free throws brought Khimki within 10 as the last period got underway. But a Dashaun Wood triple kept Benetton in control. Wilkinson scored twice, however a Domen Lorbek three made it 64-50. Lorbek would add 3 more free throws and Nicevic scored twice as the lead reached 71-54, allowing the home fans to celebrate a big win before the final buzzer.
