The Take

It is a highly-anticipated showdown between undefeated teams. CSKA leads the 2015-16 Euroleague in index ranking (116.3 per game) and Unicaja ranks third (99.5). Unicaja is last in defensive rebounds (19.8 drpg.), but second in offensive boards (13.8 orpg.), so big men like Will Thomas, Fran Vazquez and Richard Hendrix must be ready to box out against Kyle Hines, Andrey Vorontsevich and Slava Kravtsov. Both teams have taken good care of the ball - Unicaja is first in assists-to-turnover ratio (4.55) and CSKA is third (4.2). Backcourt defense is critical for Unicaja, as Milos Teodosic ranks fourth in assists (7 apg.) and Nando De Colo is second in scoring (19 ppg.). Teodosic faces tough matchups against Stefan Markovic (6.8 ppg.) and Nemanja Nedovic, who know him from the Serbian national team. Mindaugas Kuzminskas (15.3 ppg.) is a natural-born mismatch at small forward and must step up in a big game like this. Unicaja must control the boards, stop de Colo and involve sharpshooters Edwin Jackson and Jamar Smith. CSKA must play strong defense to be able to run the floor like it has until now.

Quotes Head Coaches

ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"CSKA and Unicaja are still undefeated, we both play good basketball and win deservedly. We know each other very well as we played both in regular season and in Top 16 last year, not counting preseason games. They refreshed the roster and created a much better team, more athletic and competitive, with better frontline and backcourt. We expect a difficult game and we respect our opponents a lot, we will prepare very seriously. They are really aggressive on both ends. Definitely the number of possessions will be one of the main factors to win the game. By saying this I mean that you have to win rebounding battle and limit the number of turnovers. I would like to invite all our fans to come and support us again one of the group leaders."
PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"Our way of doing our job takes us to Moscow being ambitious. We know that last year they beat us five times, that the historic record is overwhelming, but we want to go there and force overtime, like last year, or lead comfortably at home even if we couldn't keep that. They are one of the richest clubs in Europe and they are candidates for the title, plus they have defeated us 100 percent of the time, but we want to go there and compete and even win, if possible. CSKA is a complete team, their backcourt is brutal, they have great shooters and they are also solid inside, with their big men also being able to shoot from the long range. It is a very good team built to win it all. We could just not go to Moscow or get there with the white flag, but we want to compete. We want to leave Moscow being a better team, regardless of the result."

"We know them well as they kept the core of the team from the last season. But they know us well too, especially me, because my National Team friends are on the roster. Unicaja plays great in the beginning of the season, so I think the game will be tough and interesting. We keep practicing hard, trying to improve our game, and we know we have to play even better than usually to win it, to stay focused for 40 minutes."
DIEZ, DANIEL
Unicaja Malaga
"Playing against a team like CSKA Moscow thrills you but at the same time impresses you. They are a giant in Europe with an amazing team that is well balanced on all lines. They have great players that are hard to stop, but we want to go to Moscow to compete, like everywhere else. We want to keep our good streak in the Euroleague and follow our path to the Top 16. We are aware that it will not be easy, but we are going there for the win."

Unicaja Malaga beats CSKA in Moscow to become lone unbeaten team at 5-0

Unicaja Malaga sent a message that was heard all around Europe with a 78-86 victory over CSKA Moscow in the Russian capital on Friday evening. Edwin Jackson and Mindaugas Kuzminskas starred for Unicaja, which improved to 5-0 to secure the best record in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague at the midway point in the regular season. CSKA fell to 4-1 in Group D. After a close first half, CSKA started the third quarter strong and led by as many as 9, but Unicaja rallied to close the gap and then took over with a big fourth quarter to pull away. Edwin Jackson made 6 of 8 three-pointers and finished with 24 points, while Kuzminskas only missed 3 shots in accruing 22 points plus 3 assist and 3 steals. Stefan Markovic added 10 points and 7 assists for the winners, who outrebounded CSKA 23-35. Cory Higgins paced the CSKA attack with 17 points, Nando De Colo added 14, Kyle Hines scored 13, Nikita Kurbanov 12 and Milos Teodosic recorded 10 points and 7 assists.

First quarter: Despite fantastic start for Kuzminskas, CSKA claims narrow lead

Kuzminskas attacked the rim for a basket and foul and then dunked on the break thanks to a great pass from Carlos Suarez in a 0-5 start. Kurbanov opened the CSKA scoring with a jumper and De Colo followed with a lefty layup. After Jamar Smith free throws, Andrey Vorontsevich tied the game at 7-7 with a triple. After misses on both ends, Nemanja Nedovic and Kurbanov traded triples. After Kuzmisnkas scored on the offensive glass, he traded threes with De Colo for a 13-15 lead at the TV timeout. The Unicaja forward already had 10 points in less than six minutes! Teodosic came off the bench and soon netted 2 free throws and Aaron Jackson dished to Kyle Hines for a fast break slam as CSKA grabbed a 17-15 lead. Markovic drew a foul attempting a triple and made 2 of the resulting free throws. Teodosic converted on a pretty drive and later split free throws to leave the hosts up 20-17 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Higgins makes an instant impact for the hosts

Higgins’s steal led to a Demetris Nichols triple, but Edwin Jackson connected twice from downtown to tie the game. A Will Thomas tip-in capped a 0-8 run that gave Unicaja a 23-25 lead. However Higgins responded with a basket-plus-foul. De Colo’s jumper briefly put CSKA ahead, but Fran Vazquez followed up his own miss to tie it again. A Teodosic triple from the corner was matched by Markovic from the elbow to make it 30-30. Higgins drove the baseline for a layup, but a red-hot Markovic downed another triple. The lead switched hands as De Colo made a layup and Richard Hendrix netted a jump hook. After Markovic bounced an inbounds pass off Teodosic’s backside and scored himself, a De Colo triple tied things at 37-37. Unicaja put together a brilliant sequence that saw Hendrix block Teodosic’s shot to trigger a fast break that Edwin Jackson finished with a three-pointer. However Higgins stepped up with a pair of threes to put the hosts in front. Hendrix scored in the lane to bring the visitors within 43-42 at the break.

Third quarter: Unicaja stays hot on CSKA’s tail

Teodosic found an open Kubanov for a jumper and then netted free throws. Vorontsevich split free throws before canning a triple to cap an 8-0 start to the half. Hendrix took an alley-oop pass from Markovic for a layup and muscled his way to another score, but Hines responded with a monster slam that made it 53-46. Markovic found a cutting Kuzminskas, but Higgins scored quickly. A Vazquez layup was met by a Kurbanov three. Vazquez split free throws and then finished an alley-oop pass from Markovic with a slam. Edwin Jackson made it 58-53 with a three-pointer. Hines countered with a three-point play at the other end. Edwin Jackson sank a pair of free throws and after a De Colo layup, Edwin Jackson drained his fifth three to keep the visitors within 2. But Hines muscled his way to a bucket inside to end the quarter at 65-61.

Fourth quarter: Edwin Jackson and Kuzminskas finish CSKA off

Kuzminskas stepped into the passing lanes for a steal that led directly to an Edwin Jackson slam. Nichols scored inside for CSKA before Edwin Jackson’s alley-oop layup made it 67-65. Kuzminskas made a runner in the lane to tie it and then put Unicaja up with a three-pointer, which prompted a CSKA timeout. Hines overpowered his defenders for a slam to end the Unicaja run. Edwin Jackson provided a highlight; his jumper was blocked by Nichols, but Jackson grabbed the loose ball and quickly fired in a deep three before the 24-second clock expired. De Colo placed a perfect pass to Hines to bring the hosts within 71-73, but Suarez countered with a triple. Kuzminskas’s two-handed jam after a three-quarters-court pass from Nedovic put the visitors up 7. Suarez’s second triple made it 71-81 with four minutes to play. Higgins’s triple was matched by Kuzminskas. Higgins added a tough layup only to see Dedovic drive through the CSKA defense to keep the difference at double figures. Unicaja started using longer possessions to kill the clock and every missed CSKA shot brought the visitors closer to their goal. CSKA scored only once in the final two and a half minutes as Unicaja secured a spectacular win.

"Congratulations to Malaga, they played better, had better mindset, they were more decisive, made some big shots and deserved to win. Unicaja is 5-0 and they are the favorite not only because of that but because of the way they play on the court, of hard work, of continuation. A lot of hard work in front of us. We got a good lesson. We have to watch the film and play smarter. And we will play smarter. I said before two days ago this was a game of possessions. And Unicaja had 13 more possessions than us. We had more turnovers and less rebounds. I think that was the first game of the season when we lost rebounding battle. This was a good bell for us. We have to go on the court with different attitude, better mindset to win games. When something doesn't kill you it makes you better. We will rise up and play better. We must."
PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"We knew before coming here that it would be tough. We lost four times to CSKA last year; some close, some with a clear difference. But we expected it to be tough here where they have been scoring almost 100 points a game at home. They have players who can score in any way, inside, outside, with three pointers. But we were consistent and don't give up. And we were able to get to the fourth quarter and change the game with our defense. We got lucky with some shots, but were there and we were consistent and we held CSKA to 78 points with good defense, and that is why we won."

Players

HIGGINS, CORY
CSKA Moscow
"Our biggest mistake today was giving them opportunities to take too many offensive rebounds. We let them have too many possessions. We just should not let that happen. And it's hard to win playing like that."
KUZMINSKAS, MINDAUGAS
Unicaja Malaga
"It was a nice game, I think. Of course, we are happy to win on this court. I never did it before in the Euroleague. I beat CSKA once in the VTB, but never in the Euroleague. And right now, after the first round, we are undefeated and excited for that. But it's just the first round and we have lots of things to do. So we are excited, but you know we are not going to stop here."
