THE TAKE

A pair of teams coming off of disappointing Week 2 losses will meet on Thursday at the Peace and Freindship Arena in Piraeus, Greece, when Olympiacos hosts Virtus VidiVici Bologna in Group A. Olympiacos looked impressive on opening night when it bested Tau Ceramica at home, but was stunned last week on the road at Union Olimpija. Head coach Pini Gershon's squad has shown it has oodles of talent, but the team chemistry is still an issue. One area where the Reds have excelled is perimeter shooting, making a league best 46.9% of their shots from downtown this season. Virtus opened up with a home win over Zalgiris, but was grounded last week in a 27-point loss at Tau. Head coach Stefano Pillastrini has had different players step up for each game, with Alan Anderson coming off the bench for 28 points in Week 1 and Delonte Holland posting 27 points and 11 rebounds last week. This week the team should have almost all of its top players available, with the possible exception of reserve playmaker Fabio Di Bella, who missed practices this week with knee problems. Starting point guard Will Conroy is slowly finding his feet for Virtus, dishing 5 assists last week. Conroy will need to continue that improvement against Olympiacos's deep backcourt to provide his team with more scoring options. On the other end, Lynn Greer will run the Reds' attack with Milos Teodosic his main backup. On the wings Virtus's go-to guys, Anderson and Holland, are joined by Dewarick Spencer and Federico Lestini, needing to match up with the likes of Arvydas Macijauskas, Qyntel Woods and Kostas Vasiliadis. The visitors may find themselves challenged in the paint, where starters Roberto Chiacig and Guilherme Giovannoni and top reserve Andrea Crosariol will have to deal with Marc Jackson, Ioannis Bourousis and Jake Tsakalidis. Based on these teams' recent results, Olympiacos would be the favorite at home where the team went 8-3 last season, though Virtus will be itching to prove that it belongs after getting blown out last week. The keys for the visitors could be with its biggest two players, Chiacig and Crosariol, who'll need to keep their team alive on the glass and to keep Jackson from scoring if Virtus wants to stay close. On the other hand, the Reds will look for Greer and Macijauskas to use their experience to create problems for Conroy at both ends of the floor, knowing that without him, Virtus will have trouble keeping up offensively with Olympiacos.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"This is the perfect time for our fans to help the team. When you suffer two losses in a row, the problem is getting psychological, so to get over those bad results we need our crowd to be supportive against Virtus Bologna. The Italian team has many young players who enjoy playing free basketball in the open court and need close attention. It doesn't matter that they lost the recent domestic derby to Fortitudo Bologna, because the game on Thursday will simply be a totally different story."
PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
"Before the game against Tau Ceramica, I said that I was curious to estimate our competitiveness at the highest level, but I thought we would have Dewarick Spencer and Alan Anderson 100-percent healthy. Unfortunately, Spencer didn't travel with us to Spain and Anderson joined the team tired after his flight from the U.S. Now, before the game against Olympiacos, I can say I have the same curiosity about my team, because we will have more players in the roster. In Greece, it will be important to play without watching the score. We know that these kinds of games are winnable only if we have an extraordinary night. We must face them without any fear even though Olympiacos's talent is amazing, as they have players like Macijauskas, Jackson and Greer. We can't put expectations on these games. We just have to approach them as the chance to improve our team's intensity and basketball. We need to work a lot because we are close in a lot of things. We also lacked of stamina in the last game, but I am sure we can make big improvements if we raise the intensity level in our practices."

Players

VASILOPOULOS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"The recent Greek League loss to Panathinaikos made us sad, but we have already left it behind. The fact that we had more days to prepare the game against Virtus was helpful for the team and for me personally, since my injury made me lose many practices and official games. Without doubt, we must not underestimate Virtus and must not think that we are going to have an easy evening on our home court. The example of Union Olimpija is still fresh in our minds and definitely we need to step up."
CHIACIG, ROBERTO
Virtus VidiVici
"Olympiacos is a strong team and playing at their home court is always very difficult, this year particularly as they are aiming as high as possible. I expect a really tough game in which we will try to take some steps forward. We want to play as a team, with balance between inside and outside plays. We are working in order to be balanced and to set up easier shots on offense. I will face Jake Tsakalidis and it's like a surprise for me. I have known him for many years, as I remember him playing for AEK Athens when I was there in 1997, 10 years ago. He's always been a tough guy, even when he was young."
Arvydas Macijauskas - Olympiacos The offensive prowess of Olympiacos proved more than enough in a blowout 104-76 victory at home in Piraeus against visiting Virtus VidiVici Bologna on Thursday in Group A. Olympiacos not only raised its record to 2-1, but enjoys part of a five-way tie for first place with CSKA Moscow, Montepaschi Siena, Tau Ceramica and Union Olimpija. Virtus, meanwhile, fell to 1-2, tied with Zalgiris for sixth place. Olympiacos led comfortably until Virtus narrowed the difference to 63-57 late in the third quarter, but another offensive blast gave the Reds momentum to the finish. Arvydas Macijauskas paced the winners with 24 points outside, including perfect 8-for-8 two-point shooting, while Marc Jackson matched those 24 working the inside and blocked 4 shots. Qyntel Woods followed with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists off the bench, which is where Kostas Vasiliadis came from to hit 3 three-pointers among his 11 points. Dewarick Spencer was the big gun for Virtus with 20 points, while Delonte Holland was close behind with 18. However, the Virtus defense just couldn't limit the Reds, who made 66.6% of their two point attempts (26 for 39) and 89.2% from the free throw line (25 for 28).

Delonte Holland - Virtus BidiVici BolognaDewarick Spencer nailed the triple for Virtus to open the game, but soon the guests found it difficult to get connected. Olympiacos rolled up a 7-3 lead based on 5 points from Macijauskas. Luca Garri broke his team's nearly four-minute scoring silence with a three-pointer that made it 7-6. Virtus switched to zone defense, but that was not a problem for Macijauskas who created room for a nice lay-up in at 9-6. Olympiacos missed a couple of three-pointers against the zone then, however, so and when Delonte Holland sank his own triple try, the score stood tied at 9-9. No matter: Jackson finished a good Olympiacos fastbreak with a basket-plus-free throw and Macijauskas added another pair of easy baskets to quickly make it 16-9. His free throws boosted the Reds' unanswered run to 9-0 and meant Macijauskas had already reached 13 points in less 8 minutes of play. Youngster Juan Carlos Canelo drove for a nice layup to offer offensive solutions to Virtus, but Olympiacos anwered back in multiples as Woods and Lynn Greer combined for 7 points and a solid 22-11 lead for the hosts after one quarter.

Andrea Crasariol and Canelo opened the second quarter with consecutive baskets to bring Virtus closer, but Macijauskas scored again and Jackson finished a great assist by Greer at 26-15. The hosts kept dictating the tempo as Jackson dominated inside with consecutive points to make it 30-17. Will Conroy and Alan Anderson took offensive responsibility for Virtus now, but Woods did so for Olympiacos as the difference remained high, 35-21. He remained on fire, firing in a difficult triple to make it 38-23 and force Virtus coach Stefano Pillastrini to use a timeout. Still, easy baskets continued coming for Olynpiacos with Jackson making it 40-23 and reaching 13 points himself while Woods dunked impressively. Spencer chipped in a triple to cut the difference to 42-29, before Vassilopoulos, just back from injury, answered with a fade-away jumper. Free throws a tip-in by Holland let Virtus trim the differenct to an even 10 points at halftime, 46-36.

Marc Jackson - OlympiacosGiorgos Printezis and Spencer exchanged baskets to begin the third quarter. Virtus used offensive boards now to create better opportunities, so Olympiacos head coach Pini Gershon ordered a zone defense. The resulting rebounds gave let the Reds run in the open court to baskets by Woods, Macijauskas and Greer at 58-44. Spencer's triple for Virtus was then answered by Woods with a fastbreak layup to make it 60-47. It seemed like the points were going both ways evenly as Conroy fired in a triple over the Greer and Woods did the same over Spencer, but Virtus got behind Holland to push the difference down to single digits, at 63-54. And when Spencer netter another triple for 63-57, the momentum was now clearly in favor of the guests. Three-pointers continued falling in as Greer, Spencer and Jackson each hit from downtown for a 69-60 score. Kostas Vassiliadis came off the Olympiacos bench to keep the triples flying with 2 in a row from behind the arc that let Olympiacos breathe easily again at 75-60. Holland scored for the visitors, but Roderick Blackney added another Olympiacos triple to close the third quarter at 78-62, the biggest lead yet.

Crosariol dunked impressively from the baseline to start the final period. However, Olympiacos was easily finding the way to the basket as Jackson popped twice in a row at 82-64. As Conroy dunked and Giorgios Printezis hit a hook shot, the defenses were clearly flaggin. A basket-plus-free throw by Macijauskas set a 20-point difference, 89-69, with 6 minutes left. That soon rose to 92-69 and before long the Olympiacos fans were waiting for the Reds to reach the 100-point-mark. Jake Tsakalidis dunked for 99-76 and Vassiliadis did the honors with free throws as the hosts finished an easy night holding solid position again in Group A.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"We played better than in our last two games. It's the first time we finish the game with 18 assists. Until now, nobody wanted to pass the ball, but tonight we really passed it. I can't say that we played good defense, but at least we played smart on defense. However, we could have finished the job easier and earlier, but we missed many rebounds on the defensive end."
PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
"It was very difficult for us to stay in the game. They have a lot of great players. I think we had a good first half. We stole some balls and had 10 more possessions. However, we made some stupid errors that put us 10 points behind. Nevertheless, we started good the second half, but in that moment Olympiacos made some difficult three-pointers and it was hard for us to react and bounce back. When we stopped playing as a team, the game was over for us. In such a level of basketball, in Euroleague games, you have to play well during the whole four quarters of the game."

Players

JACKSON, MARC
Olympiacos
"Tonight we all played together as a team. In the first half, we didn't go for the defensive rebound as we thought that somebody else will go. As a result, they grabbed a lot of offensive boards, I think about 15. But, we improved in the second half and had the opportunities to run the floor and score some easy baskets. Every day I feel better in the team as the coach tries in every practice to guide us to play according to his system. The system gets the team going and that's what we will do; play together as a team."
SPENCER, DEWARICK
Virtus VidiVici
"We started the game a little bit slow, so we had to run after Olympiacos. They managed to nail some difficult baskets in the beginning of the third period, and that disappointed us a bit exactly when we had managed to trim the margin. It's difficult to win on the road and we have to learn a lesson from tonight's game. We were scared after Olympiacos hit some good jumpers. We have to try more to play as a team and get better every day."
