THE TAKE

Talk about dominating teams in Eastern Europe and CSU Asesoft does not usually come to mind. But Asesoft have captured the last five Romanian league titles. They also became the first Romanian team to win a European title when they captured the 2005 FIBA EuroCup Challenge crown. And now star coach Mladan Jojic is leading Asesoft as the first Romanian team in the ULEB Cup, which they tip off at home in Group C against Hanzevast Capitals after a hot start to the Romanian league. The man to watch for Asesoft is the man in the middle, Rashard Griffith. The Capitals come into their second ULEB Cup season with coach Josep Claros leading the way. Kevin Melson is the team's top inside force and Dwayne Archbold and Alton Mason are outside. It will be up to Claros to lead his troops past a tough Romanian side.

CSU Asesoft took a 80-73 win over the Hanzevast Capitals of Netherlands in Ploiesti, Romania, on Tuesday night, for Group C in the first ULEB Cup game ever for both sides. Four players scored in double figures for CSU Asesoft led by 17 of Reggie Elliott who also hadded 5 assists, Gaidamavicius added 16, Bojan Obradovic 14, Arvydas Cepulis 13, and Rashard Griffith had 10 others. Rogier Jansen scored 17 for Hanzevast Capitlas, Alton Mason bagged 14 and Dwayne Archbold 13. The guests maintained a slim cushion until the beginning of the last quarter, then two free throws of Virgil Carutasu gave the first advantage to the home team 61-60 with five minutes left, and they never looked back conquering a deserved win.

The first seven minutes were balanced in Ploiesti with CSU Asesoft and Hanzevast Capitals tying 10-10, then the guests with three consecutive three-pointers of Guido Grunheid and Rogier Jansen got a 11-19 margin they maintained also at the end of the first quarter when they led 13-21. Pavel Englicky fueled the Dutch side to 13-25 early in the second period, but the hosts sparked a 15-0 run highglighted by back-to-back baskets from downtown of Arvydas Cepulis to stay on 28-25 with four minutes left to halftime. Jansen gave again a 28-34 cushion to the guests, before Rashard Griffith scored in the paint for the final 33-34 for Hanzevast Capitals at the end of the first half. The team from Groningen got a 35-42 advanatage back from the lockers, but CSU Asesoft with Gaidamavicius on fire, remained in the game to finish on 51-56 at the end of the third quarter. They took the head midway through the last quarter with Carutasu from the foul line and controlled the match getting a safety margin using also a good accuracy from the foul line to get the win.
