THE TAKE

The battle for a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs via Group G wages on come Wednesday when Unicaja hosts rival AXA FC Barcelona at the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain. Unicaja, which started the Top 16 with back-to-back losses on the road, overcame CSKA Moscow at home last week as center Daniel Santiago shined with 20 points. Meanwhile Barca, which edged Unicaja 64-62 in the opener, smashed Lottomatica Roma by 29 last week to improve to 2-1 as Gianluca Basile led a well-balanced scoring effort with a season-high 19 points. Both Barcelona wins in the Top 16 have come at home. These two Spanish League rivals are meeting in the Euroleague for the third straight season. Last year Unicaja beat Barca 2-1 in the Quarterfinal Playoffs to advance to the Final Four for the first time in club history. Unicaja won again when they met in December in the Spanish League as Marcus Haislip scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to push Unicaja to a 77-62 victory. Fran Vazquez was the hero for Barca when it won three weeks ago with 10 points, 7 rebound and 4 blocked shots. That game was new head coach Xavi Pascual’s first in charge and he has certainly brought about a change in his team’s defensive intensity. The next challenge is to bring that same effort on the road for a big win, which could make all the difference in this crowded group. Barcelona boasts a balanced roster with depth inside and outside and players who bring it all on both sides of the ball. The players to have played the most under Pascual are the guard trio of Jaka Lakovic, Basile and Pepe Sanchez, who spent the previous three seasons at Unicaja. They’ll go hard against Unicaja’s deep backcourt led by Davor Kus, Jiri Welsch and Berni Rodriguez. In the paint, Santiago teams with Marcus Haislip and Boniface NDong to form a formidable frontline that will duel with Vazquez, Mario Kasun, Denis Marconato and Jordi Trias. The fact that these teams know each other so well plus the added importance of every result at this stage of the season makes this game one to watch. Both coaches are certain to be ready to stop the other team’s stars, so while big nights from guys like Haislip or Santiago for Unicaja and Barca’s Lakovic or Sanchez could make an impact, keep an eye on the likes of Terrel Castle or Carlos Jimenez from the home team and Alex Acker or Gary Neal from the visitors to be the X-factor in what could be a colossal battle of two teams eyeing the Final Four.

Quotes Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We overcame a super tough first leg with the worst calendar we could have had, but we are still alive in the competition. Now it's time for the second leg, time of the final decisions, starting with this vital game, which will determine who has the best options to reach the Quarterfinals with CSKA. We have to clench our fists to compete with sacrifice against the physical problems we have. We have to be concentrated because we face a rival which has shown to be in a good moment this last week. Of course, we have to make that our intensity and energy feed our fans into helping the team in a game that will be complicated and balanced."
PASCUAL, XAVIER
AXA FC Barcelona
"We know for sure how important this game is and how much we can get if we are able to win in Malaga. If we do it we'll be in a very good position to get into the playoffs. Yes, they are in a long run of Euroleague wins at home, but we want to break that run. We are going to Malaga with all the desire to win this game. This is the only thing we are thinking about right now. This is a very important game and we have to be prepared."

Players

HAISLIP, MARCUS
Unicaja
"The game against AXA FC Barcelona is very complicated because they have shown a great level this last week. Their last two games both in Euroleague and Spanish League, they won by large margins so we have to be ready to beat a great team. Let's hope that with good play on the court and the help of our crowd during all the game we will be able to get that win."
ILYASOVA, ERSAN
AXA FC Barcelona
"I feel more confortable lately on the floor. I needed some time to adjust to the team, and now I feel better. My goal is to help the team as much as I can. The inside game of Unicaja is very strong. All their inside players but Santiago shoot from outside. We can't let Santiago feel confortable, because he can hurt us a lot, as he did against CSKA Moscow last week. Haislip is a very fast player and very dangerous as well. We need to force him to make difficult shots. I'm sure we can win this game if we are focused since the very beginning. This is our goal."
Davor Kus - Unicaja Unicaja took a major step forward in Group G's playoff race by edging AXA FC Barcelona 62-61 in Malaga, Spain on a last-second layup by point guard Carlos Cabezas, his first points of the Top 16. Both teams now have 2-2 records and will be tied either in the middle of Group G or with the other two teams, CSKA and Lottomatica Roma, after they play Thursday. Davor Kus led the winners with 15 points, Daniel Santiago added 11 while Boniface Ndong barely missed a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds. But Cabezas, out all round until tonight with injury, simply stole the show. Jaka Lakovic had 16 points for Barcelona, although no other scorers reached double digits for the guests, who were outrebounded by 37-29 and did not go to the foul line in the opening 39 minutes. Barcelona led 11-15 after 10 minutes but Kus, German Gabriel and Santiago allowed Unicaja to regain the lead, 34-32, at halftime. A wild triple by Terrell Castle allowed Unicaja to keep a 48-47 edge at the end of the third quarter. As the game went down to the wire, Lakovic buried a triple, added a jumper and hit his team's first 4 free throw tries, all in the final minute, to give Barcelona a 60-61 lead with 12.5 seconds to go. Cabezas had other ideas, however, as he climbed off the bench after a timeout, took the ball the length of the court himself and hit a fallaway shot over two defenders to lift 10,000 fans at Martin Carpena Arena out of their seats with joy.

A steal converted into a jumper by Fran Vazquez and a back-door feed from Pepe Sanchez to Alex Acker got Barcelona a quick 0-4 advantage in the opening quarter. Not until Carlos Jimenez powered an inside shot through did Unicaja get on the scoreboard, after which physical defenses continued ruling for awhile. Marcus Haislip not only ended that trend with a driving bank shot, but was fouled and put Unicaja ahead 5-4 with the extra free throw. Santiago then fed Haislip with a surprise alley-oop dunk pass from the top. Barcelona remained stuck for almost 6 minutes without scoring until Gianluca Basile's reverse layup ended the drought while Sanchez stole and scored alone to put the guests back in front, 7-8. Jiri Welsch took Unicaja's lead back, but not for long. Ersan Ilyasova hit a cutting Basile for another layup and Sanchez stole again as Unicaja suffered its seventh turnover already. Lakovic came on the floor and buried a triple before ending the quarter with yet another back-door layup for an 11-15 Barcelona advantage.

Jaka Lakovic - AXA FC BarcelonaThe scoring trend changed quickly in the second quarter, which German Gabriel opened with a triple to which Ilyasova responded with 5 points in a row to keep Barcelona ahead 16-20. Gabriel then hooked over Ilyasova and then finished a 6-0 run that left Unicaja ahead 22-20. But not for long, Mario Kasun scored two baskets around a one-handed layup by Sanchez to put Barcelona back in front, 22-26. And back came Unicaja, with Kus burying a triple, Santiago making an up-and-under basket and then Kus connecting again from the arc to tie it up 30-30. Santiago got the go-ahead points at the line and put down a running one-hander off a loose ball before Lakovic finished the half banking in a layup over the big man to leave a 34-32 halftime scoreboard.

Roger Grimau buried a corner triple soon after the break, as Barcelona kept opting for a small lineup with Ilyasova at power forward. Ilyasova soon scored inside for a 34-37 Barcelona lead. Santiago sank a five-meter jumper but his team struggled to find him in the low post now. The guests entered the foul bonus very early, however, allowing Unicaja to adjust its game plan. Ilyasova had a huge block on Santiago while Basile added a fast break layup for a 36-39 Barcelona edge. Santiago made free throws, as Barcelona kept trying long shots without much success until Acker sank a five-meter jumper. Barcelona feld confident with its 2-3 zone defense but Unicaja called timeout and Barcelona switched back to man-to-man. Santiago made 1 of 2 free throws before Haislip took over with a put-back dunk to tie the game, 41-41. Basile scored in transition and Kasun added a reverse layup to quickly restore a 41-45 Barcelona lead. Kus followed free throws with a baseline jumper while Castle nailed an eight-meter bomb for a 48-47 Unicaja edge after 30 minutes.

Daniel Santiago and Carlos Jimenez - UnicajaNdong hit free throws right at the start of the fourth quarter, as Barcelona struggled to score now. Jordi Trias stepped up with a one-handed dunk but Ndong slammed at the other end to keep Unicaja ahead, 52-49. Sanchez struck from downtown, as the game turned into a physical battle, with players diving for loose balls. Unicaja made the most out of it, as Ndong shined with a put-back dunk while Kus fired in a corner three-pointer for a 57-52 lead with 6 minutes to go. Barcelona called timeout and Lakovic fired in a three-pointer, as the guests did not allow any open shots now. Ndong made a free throw but Lakovic sank a six-meter shot to get Barcelona within 58-57 with 3 minutes to go. Berni Rodriguez did not miss from the foul line for a 60-57 Unicaja lead. Time was running out for Barcelona but Lakovic drew a foul to become the first Barcelona to shoot free throws with 29 seconds to go. Lakovic made both shots while Ilyasova had a big block at the other end. Welsch fouled Lakovic, who again hit both free throws for a 60-61 Barcelona edge with 12.5 seconds to go. Unicaja opted to isolate Cabezas, who took over with a drive and fallaway shot over Acker and Ilyasova that sealed the outcome with 0.2 seconds remaining. Barcelona called timeout but only had time for a tip-in that just didn't happen.

Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"Both teams had a good game on defense, while we had up-and-downs in offense, playing against a really good team. This win allows us to go one step higher in the group standings. There are two games left and the group is very balanced. It was a tough game for us, we had the chance to get the tie-break advantage but we didn't do what we must have done. We will see if a tie-break situation takes place or not. The key play for that was a foul that Ndong had on Lakovic, that allowed him to shoot free throws with us leading by 3 points, as they were not scoring fluently."
PASCUAL, XAVIER
AXA FC Barcelona
"First of all, conragtulations to Unicaja for its win. It was an exciting game in which any teams could have won. Rebounding and 4-5 loose balls that Unicaja won decided the game. Both teams worked really well defensively. Sometimes a low scoring game can come because of good defenses, not because mistakes in offense, and this is what happened tonight. It is tough to say if it is so good to win the basket average when we lost the game. Maybe I will look important when I think about it tomorrow, but when you lose, that is what matters. We could have won the game that my players put a lot of effort against a great opponent. Offensive rebounds were the key, as well as 3 loose balls that turned out to become a layup by Santiago, a three-pointer by Kus and another basket for Unicaja. That, added to a great rebounding night by Ndong decided the game."

Players

NDONG, BONIFACE
Unicaja
"We needed to win tonight and that is what we did. We must look ahead now, because we can beat CSKA and Lottomatica. Every team keeps its options alive in this group."
SANTIAGO, DANIEL
Unicaja
"The most important thing is that we won the game, because Barcelona is always a tough opponent. I am happy because we won and let's see what happens from now on. We must worry about ourselves and try to win our two games remaining."
GRIMAU, ROGER
AXA FC Barcelona
"We had the option to win the game, but Cabezas took the right decision and we could not stop him. We managed to get the tie-break advantage, which that be very important when the Top 16 comes to an end. We go back home happy with the tie-break advantage but also sad because of this loss, as we had the chance to win the game, too."
