The Take

This will be Limoges's last Euroleague home game this season, so a good crowd is expected at Beaublanc. Olympiacos will lock up first place in Group B with a win. The Reds signed Shawn James, adding defense and hustle to a frontcourt led by Georgios Printezis, Othello Hunter and Nikola Milutinov. Ali Traore, Will Daniels and Frejus Zerbo must step up on defense for the hosts. Olympiacos has the second-best defense in the competition (68 ppg.) and Limoges ranks last (84.8 ppg.) in that category, so a defensive turnaround is needed by the hosts. Leo Westermann (3.88 per game) leads the Euroleague in turnovers, so Olympiacos will try to pressure him and Heiko Schaffartzik with good on-the-ball defenders like Vangelis Mantzaris and Ioannis Athinaiou. Matt Lojeski and Daniel Hackett will try to make the difference at the wings against Mark Payne, Matt Gatens and, above all, Nobel Boungou-Colo, who has been a force of nature at the small forward position. Limoges needs Boungou-Colo and Traore to excel on offense and bounce back as a team on defense. Even without Vassilis Spanoulis, the Reds will play the same point-to-point, possession-by-possession basketball that has worked so well for them in recent years.

Game Notes

Limoges CSP

Limoges leads the all-time series against Olympiacos 7-3.

Limoges’s 151 turnovers (18.9 per game) are the most in the league by nearly 3 per game through Round 8.

Heiko Schaffartzik established his Euroleague career high in scoring with 21 points against Olympiacos two years ago, in December 2013. He made 5 of 8 three-pointers, but his team, FC Bayern Munich, lost 103-105.

Leo Westermann was a teammate of Olympiacos center Nikola Milutinov at Partizan Belgrade during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

Mark Payne was a teammate of Olympiacos players Ioannis Athinaiou and Dimitrios Agravanis during the 2012-13 season at Panionios. They were coached there by current Olympiacos head coach, Giannis Sfairopoulos.

Mark Payne was a teammate of Olympiacos forward Michalis Tsairelis during the 2013-14 season at PAOK Thessaloniki.

Olympiacos Piraeus

Olympiacos leads the league in offensive rebounding through Round 8 with 13.4 per game.

Giannis Sfairopoulos coached Limoges forward Mark Payne during the 2012-13 season at Panionios.

Georgios Printezis has scored in double figures in 11 straight Euroleague games.

Printezis has made his last 9 free throws in the Euroleague.

Vassilis Spanoulis needs 3 more three-pointers to become the 10th player in competition history to make 300 career triples.

Spanoulis is 7 steals shy of becoming the 12th player in competition history with 200 career steals.

Vangelis Mantzaris is averaging 9 points on 8-of-14 three-point shooting (57.1%) and a performance index rating of 10.5 at home this season, but just 6.3 points on 6-of-16 three-point shooting (37.5%) and a performance index rating of 4.8 in road games.

Mantzaris needs 5 more three-pointers to reach the century mark for his Euroleague career.

Nikola Milutinov has made 12 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Ioannis Athinaiou has made at least 1 three-pointer in each of his last five games; he is shooting 9 for 16 from downtown (56.3%) in that stretch.

Recent signing Shawn James could make his Olympiacos debut this week.

Quotes Head Coaches

SFAIROPOULOS, GIANNIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"Τhis is the last game for Limoges in front of their fans in the Euroleague this season. I believe that they will have an extra motivation to make their fans happy one more time. So, we have to be very careful and play our game. We have to control the rhythm and not let them score easy points or points from offensive rebounds."

Players

TSAIRELIS, MICHALIS

"Limoges is a good team. I believe that they could have played much better during the regular season, but they were unlucky in a few games. This game for us is very important because we want to finish in first place of the group. So we have to do our best and take the win."

Olympiacos KO’s Limoges to clinch top spot in Group B

Olympiacos Piraeus never trailed in no-doubt-about-it 67-76 road win over CSP Limoges on Thursday night in France. The win lifted Olympiacos to 8-1 as it clinched the first place in Group B. Limoges, in its last Euroleague home game this season, dropped to 2-7. Olympiacos pulled away with a 2-11 run in the first five minutes of the game, then assumed complete control after Ioannis Athinaiou and Georgios Printezis hit back-to-back triples in the second quarter to open a 27-40 margin. Limoges closed within 44-50, but The Reds hit three consecutive triples during a 2-13 run to break the game wide open. Georgios Printezis paced the Reds with 13 points. Vangelis Mantzaris scored 12, and Ioannis Papapetrou played 16 minutes to chip in with 11 points in victory. Ali Traore and Leo Westermann each scored 14 for Limoges, and Will Daniels had 10 in the losing effort.

First quarter: The Reds off to a good start

Mantzaris opened scoring from close range, and after Westermann opened the hosts' account with a runner, Mantzaris answered with a triple. Ousmane Camara was on a receiving end of some nice passing by Limoges and made an easy layup, but Papapetrou drove for a layup to spark an Olympiacos run. Printezis scored a fastbreak layup, and Nikola Milutinov added a put-back dunk to make it 4-13 midway through the first quarter. Westermann ended an almost a three-minute long Limoges drought with a driving layup, and after a timeout, he added another one. Daniels had a monster put-back, and after a floater from Mantzaris beat the shot-clock, Daniels had a three-point play that helped the hosts come within 15-17. But Othello Hunter banked one in from close range, and Daniel Hackett split free throws to make it 15-20 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Olympiacos hits from downtown to pull away

Frejus Zerbo scored inside to start the second, and after Athinaiou nailed a corner triple, Daniels matched it with another three-point play, 20-23. But Printezis made his trademark baseline floater, and Athinaiou drove the baseline for an easy layup. Traore had a dunk, but Printezis and Hunter each scored inside extended to the lead to 22-32. Traore answered with another basket from close range, and added a pair of free throws to the tally. However, Papapetrou drove the baseline for a reverse layup before Athinaiou and Printezis knocked down back-to-back triples that opened a 27-40 margin. After a Limoges timeout, Nobel Boungo-Colo scored an easy layup, but Printezis matched it with soft touch on a tough off-balance floater. Traore buried a jumper, and in the final seconds, Strawberry drove for a layup in the crowd, but Heiko Schaffartzik had enough time to launch and hit a half-court buzzer-beater, making it 36-46 at halftime.

Third quarter: Limoges makes a run, but Olympiacos answers back

Traore made 3 of 4 from the foul line early in the third, but Printezis dished it to Milutinov for a big slam and Hackett hit a turnaround jumper that made it 39-50. Traore kept pouring it in, making a mid-range jumper, and Westermann followed with a triple that cut it to 44-50. But Mantzaris made a corner triple, before Papapetrou and Strawberry each added one of his own to help open 46-61 margin. Michalis Tsairelis made a second-chance basket, and after Schaffartzik scored for the hosts, Hunter made it 48-65 at the end of the quarter.

Fourth quarter: Olympiacos cruises to victory

Papapetrou’s corner triple broke the 20-point barrier. Traore and Tsairelis traded baskets inside, before Westermann hit a three-pointer, 53-70. But baskets were few and far between as game was closing to its end. Traore got hurt and left the game with five minutes to go, and it took teams more than two minutes to score again, as Camara banked one in high of the glass. But Hackett nailed a triple to make it 55-73, as Olympiacos was closing the deal. After Camara scored inside, Hackett hit it from downtown again, making it 57-76. Matt Gatens fought for a put-back, then delivered back-to-back triples, but it was too little too late for Limoges, which finished the game on an 11-0 run.

"It was the last Euroleague game at Beaublanc for this season. We had to show a total effort for the club, for the Euroleague competition and for our fans. "
PRINTEZIS, GEORGIOS
Olympiacos Piraeus
It is very important we won the game and we have first place in our group, but I cannot say we controlled the game for all 40 minutes. We had many ups and downs, especially on defense, and we didn’t find the rhythm that we wanted. It is very important we won, but for the next round we have to improve many things and play more minutes at a higher level. The Final Four is still far away. First of all, we have to go game by game in the Top 16, which is a very difficult phase. We will see. The Final Four is our target, but there is a lot of time in front of us to improve and play a lot of games.
