THE TAKE

Fenerbahce Ulker looks for its first win when it hosts Zalgiris Kaunas on Thursday night in Istanbul, Turkey. Fenerbahce has struggled as of late and is coming off a rough week where it lost at Benetton Treviso and then fell to rival Efes Pilsen in a hotly contested domestic derby. Zalgiris dropped to 1-2 last week after coming up short against Winterthus Barcelona. The matchup features two of the premier power forwards in the history of the Euroleague, Fenerbahce's Mirsad Turkcan and Tanoka Beard of Zalgiris. Despite the fact that these two have been at the highest level for over a decade this is only the second that they'll go head-to-head in the Euroleague. The duo have proven to still be at the top of their game this year, as Turckan, 2002 Euroleague MVP, is second in the league with 10 rebounds per game, while Beard is averaging 14 points and 7.3 rebounds. Turkcan was cut over the eye in a fight during Fenerbahce's derby loss to Efes Pilsen over the weekend, but is expected to be ready for Zalgiris. Despite the focus on these stars, the game might be more about the play of the guards. Will Solomon, who has carried his team at times with his 12.3 points, 4 assists and 2.7 rebounds, but has also committed 5.3 turnovers on average, and Omer Onan match up with Marko Popovic (15.3 ppg., 5.3 apg.) and Marcelinho Machado. Each team has a top-notch three-point shooter, Ibrahim Kutluay for Fener and Solomon's old teammate at Maccabi Tel Aviv, Kirk Penney on Zalgiris. Kaspars Kambala (16.3 ppg.) teams with Turkcan in the paint, while Paulius Jankunas and Hanno Mottola (15 ppg.) join Beard on the Kaunas frontline. The game will be the first meeting between the clubs. On paper, these teams match up quite evenly and promise an exciting encounter that could go down to the wire. The pressure would seem to be on the hosts, who must win this home game to avoid falling too far behind at this early part of the season in the race for the Top16. However the club's veteran players should be able to cope. Two keys to watch out for that could ake the difference for the hosts will be to improve their free-throw shooting (63%) and their league-low offensive rebounding (6.3 orpg.).

Quotes Head Coaches

ORS, AYDIN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Unfortunately we are still winless in the group. This is a good chance for us to show that we are not a bad team. The main thing is to catch the team spirit and I think we did that against Efes Pilsen in the Turkish League game in the third and fourth quarters. We have to be more aggressive on defense than before in order to win the games. My players are conscious of our mistakes on defense, so I hope we don’t fail our fans who come to watch the game this time."
BAGATSKIS, AINARS
Zalgiris
"I watched all of Ulker's games in the Euroleague as well as many of their local championship's games. From what I've seen I can say that they have a lot of potential even though they are struggling in the Euroleague so far. Ulker plays simple basketball with lot of shooting, especially from the outside. This team is full of players who can make a shot, but sometimes they lack movement without the ball. Players like Kutluay, Solomon or Turkcan always contribute many points. However, a great scoring by particular players does not lead to the victory every time. I know Turkcan was involved in a brawl in the game against Efes and it's not very good thing for us. He will be angry and will vent spleen on our team."

Players

MRSIC, DAMIR
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We lost our credit in the first three games by losing all of them. Now, here’s another big game for us. The thing that makes me hopeful about this game is the way we played against Efes Pilsen in the second half at the weekend. We have to be very careful and motivated for 40 minutes of this game. They have sharpshooters like Marko Popovic and Mercelo Machado, and strong with the inside game with experienced center Tanako Beard and Vladimir Stimac. We have to be aggressive on defense and this is the only way for the victory."
POPOVIC, MARKO
Zalgiris
"Ulker is a young team that debuts in the Euroleague this year but we can't underestimate them. They have some top-notch players with Euroleague experience on their roster. They also will have homecourt advantage, and in front of their fans, Ulker is very strong. Our main goal will be to stop their four most dangerous players, who are Solomon, Kutluay, Kambala and Turkcan. If we do that, we can expect victory. Some of their players are very emotional but it's only because of their desire to win. Turkcan, who had a fight in their recent Turkish Leauge game against Efes, has a winner's mentality and sometimes he can't control his emotions. I respect him as a player a lot. He is one of the best rebounders in Europe. We want to win this game, but even if we would fail it won't be tragic. It's not like the key game in the tournament and we will have one more game against the same team at home. But victory would solve many questions, of course."
Mirsad Turkcan - Fenerbahce Ulker Fenerbahce Ulker made super sure of its first Group C victory when it rolled past visiting Zalgiris 84-75 on Thursday in Istanbul after leading by double digits most of the night. The result left both teams tied for sixth place in the group with 1-3 records. Fenerbahce blitzed Zalgiris from the very start, racing to a 13-2 lead before winning the first quarter 27-10. The lead ballooned to a high of 24 points before Zalgiris started a slow climb back that only dipped into single digits with a late 0-9 rally on which time ran out at the finish. Mirsad Turkcan paced the winners with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Damir Mrsic followed with 13 points, Ibrahim Kutluay with 12 and Kaspars Kambala with 10. For Zalgiris, Jonas Maciulis and Tanoka Beard put up 16 points each and Marko Popovic 11. Beard also pulled 13 rebounds.

Fenerbahce rolled in front early as Will Solomon, Mrsic and Kambala scored for a 6-0 lead. Turkcan joined them with his first baskets as the score reached 13-2. Zalgiris only had free throws to show until Penney made the team's first basket midway through the quarter, although Jonas Masiulis soon added a three-pointer to make it 16-8. A comeback seemed likely, but didn't happen as Fenerbahce kept finding points, whether at the line with Solomon or inside with Turkcan, whose basket-plus-free throw made it 23-10. Turkcan added yet another basket while Oguz Savas finished the quarter with his second jumper and Fenerbahce in command, 27-10.

Tanoka Beard - Zalgiris KaunasTurkcan kept going into the second quarter with a three-pointer that boosted the lead to 20 points, 30-10. Fenerbahce soon completed its 14-0 run bridging the first two quarters with Savas downing a hook to make it 34-10. Hanno Mottola tried to revive Zalgiris with 5 quick points including a three-pointer at 36-15, but the visitors still had defensive troubles. Even so, Beard scored 6 straight points between 17th and 19th minutes to cut the difference to 15 points, 44-29, but Mrsic buried a last three-pointer to cap a spectacular half with Fenerbahce holding an 18-point margin, 47-29.

Maciulis, with a pair of three-pointers early in the second half, teamed with Beard to try to keep Zalgiris coming back. The visitors were able to cut the difference to half of what it had been - all the way to 12 points, 53-41 - before Kutluay detonated a triple to stop Fenerbahce's slide. His four-point play soon made it 62-45. Beard came back with free throws and Paulius Jankunas his own shot from downtown to pull Zalgiris within 71-57, but a fine assist from Solomon to Turkcan for an easy layup ended the third quarter with Fenerbahce still way up, 73-57.

Savas kept Fenerbahce's offense going to start the final quarter and the home team's defense did the rest, holding Zalgiris scoreless for nearly 3 minutes until Maciulis dropped a layup. Kutluay took charge then of carrying the hosts, firing in a triple that made it 78-60 and then a jumper before Maciulis hit his own three-pointer. Less than 4 mintues remained and Fenerbahce led 80-66, but Zalgiris was far from finished. Beard and Maciulis dunked back-to-back before Penney rifled in a triple and Popovic drove for a layup. That 0-9 burst made it a seven-point game, 82-75, with under 2 minutes left. But time ran out on the rally as Solomon finally answered with free throws for Fenerbahce, which gave its fans their first-ever Euroleague triumph, 84-75.

Head Coaches

ORS, AYDIN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We knew that we beat a very dangerous and good team tonight. We knew that the defense was our opponent's weakest side. We were planning to take advantage of it. So the key of the game for us was our defense. First of all, I have to congratulate my players that we had excellent performance for most of the game. The defense we made in the first 15 minutes of the game bring the victory to us. But the problem for us in the last few minutes of the game was defense, too. When we look at those five minutes from the end, we cannot be satisfied. You should win much easier if you lead a game by 18 points five minutes before the end. There's a lesson at the end of the game and it is that the win is not safe if you trust this difference. Anyway, I'm happy about the result."
BAGATSKIS, AINARS
Zalgiris
"First of all, I'd like to congratulate Fenerbahce Ulker for their deserved win. Tonight there were two different Zalgiris teams on the court. There was ba ig difference between the performance of my team on the first quarter, second quarter and the third quarter. We can only be successful if we play aggressive and this is our main rule for the games. Tonight we played so slow, especially in the first half. My players seemed like they forgot Mirsad Turkcan. In the third quarter, when we played better than the first half, we made the same mistake for Ibrahim Kutluay. In the final period, in the last five minutes, we realised that we were losing and tried to come back. But when you are 18 points down, it's nearly impossible to do it."

"We had a very bad start and got unexpected losses one after another against Aris, Pau-Orthez and Benetton. It was very important for us to survive in the league. We needed to win it and managed to do it with the huge support of our fans. I think the victory was easier than we expected. Now we will have two matches away and it will be a hard period for us. But to do something in this league, we need to keep on winning."
PENNEY, KIRK
Zalgiris
"We had such an awful start. We came out and they jumped on us. We had such a first half which they just fired on us. We tried to get back in the game in the second half, but they kept the lead in the hand with easy open shots. They played well, they shot well and in the last couple of minutes we made a run but it was too late. They had talented players and they did good job tonight."
