THE TAKE

Two teams with 1-3 records meet on Friday night, when Asseco Prokom Gdynia hosts Montepaschi Siena in Group B. Prokom will be looking for revenge for last season, when it lost to Montepaschi twice. It will be a special game for Siena guard Bobby Brown, who not only comes off a historic effort last week, but visits his original Euroleague team this week. Prokom’s roster this year is a mix of old and new. Guard Alex Acker arrived at the club just over a fortnight ago, but has already made his presence felt and has provided some important rebounds and assists. Center Adam Hrycaniuk and forwards Frank Robinson and Robert Witka are a frontcourt threat, but Prokom’s standouts have come from on the perimeter. Playmaker Jerrel Blassingame leads the league in assists with 33, and he has received plenty of help by Euroleague newcomer Lukasz Koszarek and precocious teenager Mateusz Ponitka. Montepaschi has options of its own with athletic forwards Kristjan Kangur and Marcelus Kemp, plus the talents of veteran shooter Marco Carraretto and combo guard Daniel Hackett, but the player to watch is Bobby Brown. The guard was the Week 4 bwin MVP with an index rating of 43 and a career-high 34 points in a win against Elan Chalon. Of course if Montepaschi wants to focus its attack inside, center Mario Kasun can make the difference under the rim and rebounding monster Viktor Sanikidze can be relied upon to provide the boards. Montepaschi has great depth from the bench, and can use that to its advantage against Prokom. The home side will have fantastic fan support behind it, as it looks to counteract the seemingly unstoppable Brown for Montepaschi. Montepaschi Siena roars after halftime in Poland! Montepaschi Siena nailed eight three-pointers in a monster third quarter in beating Asseco Prokom Gdynia 101-66 on the road for a huge victory in Group B of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. Siena out-scored Prokom 37-12 in the third quarter to blow the game wide open and improve to 2-3 while Prokom dropped to 1-4. A week after tallying 34 points and a 43 performance index rating as bwin MVP for Week 4, Siena guard Bobby Brown had 25 points, 7 assists and a 31 rating, nailing 6 of 9 triples against Prokom. All told, Siena made 19 of 34 shots from long range and 18 of 20 free throws. Matthew Janning and David Moss both made 4 three-pointers in scoring 16 points while Kristjan Kangur added 12 points and Tomas Ress and David Hackett each scored 10 points. Prokom, which made just 16 of 29 free throws, was led by Alex Acker’s 15 points. Lukasz Koszarek added 13 and Adam Hrycaniuk chipped in 12 points in the loss.
