THE TAKE

Rarely does a rematch of a basketball game within one week promise such a different atmosphere then Fortitudo Bologna's crucial home game against BC FMP in Group G. Both sides have switched head coaches since Fortitudo knocked off FMP 70-59 on the road to give both teams a 1-2 record in the group. Fortitudo sacked Dragan Sakota and replaced him with Cesare Pancotto while FMP sent Slobodan Klipa packing in favor of Milovan Stepandic. Fortitudo finally showed life in the Eurocup as the Italian club worked very hard defensively, holding FMP to just 34% shooting for the game, including 4 of 20 (20%) from long range, and forcing 21 FMP turnovers. The entire world was not in order though for Bologna, which shot only 43% from the field itself and was outrebounded 39-26, including 13 FMP offensive rebounds. Fortitudo also exhibited its up-and-down nature, winning the second quarter 27-12 before scoring just 9 points in the third period. A big help was the addition of center Lazaros Papadopoulos, who had 13 points and 8 rebounds. Guard Darryl Strawberry also scored 13 points off the bench while reserve forward Qyntel Woods had 11 points and guard Jamont Gordon added 10. Losing the battle of the boards that bad begs the question if new coach Pancotto tries to work a different lineup with more size. But Fortitudo can ill afford to lose at home with both teams at 1-2. FMP meanwhile sees Stepandic take over a team struggling in the Adriatic League as well. At home against Bologna, the Serbian club not only turned the ball over 21 times, but also made just 19 of 29 (66%) free throws, showing a lack of concentration for the young team. The new head coach will have to quickly evaluate which of his top young talent can be most effective. Forward Dragan Labovic has been excellent all season and had 14 points and 8 rebounds against Bologna. And center Predrag Samardziski added 11 points off the bench. But no other player scored in double figures. A key player could be veteran forward Guy Pniny, who has yet to play a big role in the Eurocup. And center Miroslav Raduljica could see his role increased as well with Stepandic in charge. Regardless from where, FMP needs a spark and quickly.

Lazaros Papadopoulos - Fortitudo BolognaFortitudo Bologna trashed BC FMP 88-61 on Tuesday as it established itself as contender for a Last 16 berth from Group G. Under new head coach Cesare Pancotto, the hosts found their offensive rhythm as they improved to 2-2 – with both wins coming against FMP. Bologna will face a crucial encounter after the winter break when it hosts Artland Dragons. FMP, which hurt itself by shooting 1 for 17 from downtown (5.8%), falls to 1-3 and must win all its remaining games and hope for Fortitudo to lose twice to reach the Last 16. FMP looked strong in the opening minutes, but one Fortitudo heated up, the hosts took over and led by 19 at one point before FMP got within 49-27 at halftime. The deficit shrunk to 11 in the third quarter, but the hot hand of Jamont Gordon helped Bologna pull away once more en route to the win. Gordon came off the ebnch to lead Fortitudo with 23 points, while Lazaros Papadopoulos clogged the paint with 17 and D.J. Strawberry added 16. Predrag Samardziski paced FMP with 15 points and 8 rebounds and Miroslav Raduljica added 10 in defeat.

FMP looked strong in the opening minutes starting things off with a three-point play by Mladen Jeremic and getting another basket-plus-foul from Filip Covic, prompted new Bologna coach Pancotto to take an early timeout at 2-7. Bologna focused its offense on Papadopoulos, who scored Bologna’s first 4, while the defense became more aggressive. Dragan Labovic hit a jumper off the inbounds pass, but drives from Strawberry and Gordon got the hosts within 1 and then Papadopoulos handed Bologna its first lead. Five consecutive points by Gordon plus a hook by Alessandro Cittadini pushed Bologna to 17-11. Samardziski visited the line twice, but Gordon kept doing some damage, scoring and drawing fouls to make it 24-16 after 10 minutes. The hosts got off to a much better start in the second quarter, with a Strawberry dunk off a Matteo Malaventura steal, and two early fouls drawn. Bologna kept dancing on the rhythm set by Strawberry, stealing and scoring 6 points in no time, good for a 32-16 advantage. A timeout taken by FMP coach Stepandic made no difference as Strawberry was running fast on the break fed once more by Gordon. Some turnovers from both sides led to a 38-21 score as Papadopoulos and Nikola Ilic chipped in 4 each. Two free throws from Marcelinho Huertas had Bologna ahead 42-21. The visitors lacked ideas and quickness on offense, as Raduljica seemed to be the only threat and Fortitudo took a 49-27 lead to the locker room.

FMP trimmed the big gap as the second half began, first with a steal that led to a three-point play by Raduljica. Stefan Zivanovic added another in transition as Pancotto gathered his troops for a chat at 49-32. Then, Strawberry and Labovic exchanged drives. FMP got within 16 on a Nemanja Protic floater and 14 on a Covic top-of-the-key triple, while Bologna was misfiring on offense. The visitors used free throws by Samardziski and a three by Ilic to get within 56-45. Gordon stepped up with a tough triple and a spectacular basket inside to reestablish a big lead for Bologna, 63-47. Papadopoulos found his rhythm too. Ilic did just enough to tap it in at the buzzer and make it 67-51 entering the last quarter. Huertas and Stefano Mancinelli, with a three, combined to land an early knockout punch at 72-51. Mancinelli invented a magic pass to Cittadini inside as the guests’ frustration was more and more obvious with the fouls committed. Then, Gordon came out of nowhere to fly for an unbelievable dunk off a Strawberry dish. The fans enjoyed the open court moves of the closing minutes as the outcome was clear long before the final buzzer.

Head Coaches

PANCOTTO, CESARE
Fortitudo Bologna
"I had asked to play two halves with the same intensity, because we will need this to improve, to defend hard in both halves and to run. I think we responded well. Obviously this is only one first step. Hopefully there will be further improvement with some work done. We still make some mistakes, sometimes in the defensive transition but the will and work rate of the guys has been good today. This club needs to believe and we work to get this belief back, but there is a long way to go. I believe we can go far but I prefer to see this as a first step."
STEPANDIC, MILOVAN
BC FMP
"First of all, we'd like to congratulate the home team for the win. Our young, maybe too young, team had two awful quarters, the second and the fourth. Bologna shot very well especially in the first half. Still, my players are very talented, they were European and World Champions in the youth categories. It will be a very nice way to learn for us. Tonight the home team showed all its quality. We wish Bologna all the best."

Players

GORDON, JAMONT
Fortitudo Bologna
"I don't think I've played my best yet, I'm really not satisfied so far. I don't hear what the people say about me. What people say doesn't bother me. I want my team and my coach to be happy. I'll go out and play my best, play hard every night and try to help my team win. I felt the group was together, we came out aggressive. It was not us in the last game. I think we're a pretty good team, we still need to improve a lot but hopefully we'll go far."
RADULJICA, MIROSLAV
BC FMP
"I think we didn’t play very well on defense, they played harder than us. We can't take the change of coach as an excuse because he was part of our system. Now, it will be really hard to qualify."
