THE TAKE

One of the most consequential battles of Week 2 comes between two teams tied for last place as Asvel Basket welcomes Zalgiris Kaunas to Villeurbanne, France to decide at least a share of all-important fourth place in Group A. Both teams are tied at 1-4 with Cibona Zagreb, but one of the three will qualify for the Top 16 after 10 weeks. The winner on Thursday will have a strong edge, but both teams will be fighting for every point all 40 minutes just in case tiebreakers come between them at the end of the regular season. A victory by Zalgiris will amount to a significant advantage going forward, considering its 19-point home win over Asvel in the season opener. In that game, rookie Martynas Pocius surprised Asvel with 16 points, including 3 early three-pointers, as the catalyst off the bench for Zalgiris. Since then, Asvel lost its top scorer in that game, center Curtis Borchardt, although homegrown talent Ali Traore has stepped strongly into the void. There is a question of momentum, too, that favors Asvel. That opening game was the last victory for Zalgiris, while Asvel has gone on to challenge two giants - Montepaschi and Barcelona - before taking its first win last week, over Cibona, in spectacular comeback fashion. The hero of that comeback was point guard Bobby Dixon, who is the backcourt balance to Traore's inside scoring. If Asvel can get a third scorer involved - most likely recent signing Rawle Marshall at small forward - the team's danger level will go up. Zalgiris counters in the backcourt with Euroleague all-time leading scorer Marcus Brown and inside with rebounding ace Travis Watson plus center Mirza Begic, who has strung together three fine games. Also, Pocius returned with his finest game since opening day last week, so at worst he will be quite a distraction for Asvel's defense. Another potential distraction, small forward Dainius Salenga, was sick early this week, but made the trip for Zalgiris and will try to play. In Asvel's backcourt, Dixon might have new help as T.J. Parker, injured until now, is available to help stop Zalgiris starter Mantas Kalnietis. The visitors will want to keep an eye on an Asvel player they didn't see in the opening game, big center Bangaly Fofana, who had 10 rebounds last week in the win over Cibona and could help the hosts confront Begic. Fofana was also helping in the absence of power forward Eric Campbell, who is back and will be needed to neutralize Watson. Other key matchups feature Mindaugas Lukauskis, Laurent Foirest and Ben Dewar on the wings for Asvel against Brown, Pocius and Salenga. As two of the lowest-scoring teams in the Euroleague this year, either will look for a hot shooter or two to try to make the difference on Thursday for a victory that could lead to the Top 16.

GAME NOTES

Asvel Basket

Mindaugas Lukauskis was a teammate of Zalgiris player Mantas Kalnietis on the Lithuanian national team at EuroBasket 2009 this summer. He also played in the past with Zalgiris big man Povilas Cukinas at Lietuvos Rytas.

Lukauskis has recorded at least 1 steal in each of his last seven Euroleague appearances.

Bobby Dixon has scored in double figures and made multiple three-pointers in every game this season.

Ben Dewar’s scoring output has increased in every game so far this season.

Kristjan Kangur has made 12 consecutive free throws over his past five Euroleague games.

Zalgiris Kaunas

Scoring king Marcus Brown has spent two seasons playing in France in the past. He won the 1998 French League title with EB Pau-Orthez in 1998, where he was a teammate of current Asvel Basket player Laurent Foirest. Brown also helped Limoges win the French Cup in 2000.

Brown became the fourth player to sink 300 triples in his career last week when he drilled 4 against Fenerbahce Ulker.

Brown has made at least 1 three-pointer in seven consecutive Euroleague appearances dating back to last season.

Dainius Salenga needs just 1 more three-pointer to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.

Salenga scored a season-high 17 points last week against Fenerbahce Ulker.

Mantas Kalnietis scored a season-high 17 points in Week 1 against Asvel Basket.

Rookie Marty Pocius scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds last week against Fenerbahce Ulker. He has also made at least 1 three-pointer in all five games this season.

Zalgiris head coach Gintaras Krapikas has dressed the exact same starting five – Kalnietis, Brown, Salenga, Watson and Begic – in every Euroleague game this season.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Asvel Basket
"It’s a game to hope like last week against Cibona. It’s our second occasion to stay in the competition. If we win tomorrow we can still qualify for the Top 16. However, if we lose, there’s almost no chance to qualify. We want to forget about our disappointing game in Kaunas, we’ll show a more determined and winning team."
KRAPIKAS, GINTARAS
Zalgiris
"We should play like we do it at home. We must be strong and aggressive in both sides of the court. From the first minute of the game we will try to show the best we can. Our target is only one - victory, you should always go to the court concentrated for teh battle at 100 percent. This game will be so important for us and we all know that this game could be a big step towards next round. I believe in my team and I know that we can take the maximum of points in Villeurbanne even if the opponents has big hopes for this game as well."

Players

FOFANA, BANGALY
Asvel Basket
"We are determined. We absolutely want to win again. This game is even more important that we are playing to be qualified for Top 16. It smells like a final for both teams. Following our difficult beginning of the season, we need confidence. But we have will. If we start the game well, confidence will come back naturally."
POCIUS, MARTYNAS
Zalgiris
"We don’t have any other ways to get onto the Top 16 train. We just should get out on the court, show our best, fight from the first minute and try to reach our target, the victory. If we play good and show all what we can, I am sure, victory could be ours. We managed to maintain a big point difference in first game at home so why can’t we do it in France?"
Rawle Marshall - Asvel BasketWith its second consecutive victory at home, Asvel Basket downed visiting Zalgiris Kaunas 77-67 on Thursday in Villeurbanne, France in a pitched battle for all-important fourth place in Group A. Asvel is now 2-4 and Zalgiris 1-5, but Thursday's margin of victory wasn't enough to give the winners an advantage in potential tie-breakers. Zalgiris took their previous encounter, in the season's opening game, by 19 points, so if they are tied head-to-head at the end of the regular season, Zalgiris would advance. Asvel took over a close game in the middle of the third quarter and eventually built a 19-point lead, but Zalgiris pressured to lower it by finishing with a 2-11 run. Recent siging Rawle Marshall was the big gun for Asvel with 20 points. Laurent Foirest came off the bench to pop in 15 points, matching the scoring of Eric Campbell, while Ali Traore added 10 for the winners. For Zalgiris, which led early but never got the lead back once giving it up in the second quarter, Dainius Salenga stood out with 25 points, including 5-for-5 two-point shooting, while Travis Watson added 12 points.

Bobby Dixon got the scoring started for Asvel. Salenga blasted to the hoop to tie before Watson hit Mantas Kalnietis back-door for a 2-4 Zalgiris lead. Campbell answered from the corner, taking back the lead for Asvel, but Kalnietis took it right back with a triple from the top. Another nice feed, Salenga to Watson, kept Zalgiris rolling. Traore sky-hooked for the hosts, but again Watson got open for a layup to make it 7-11 Zalgiris. Cambpell posted up next, Kalnietis drove in response, but Marshall scored his first basket, pulling Asvel within 11-13. The scoring didn't even pause as Watson got the next basket inside and Marcus Brown swished a three-pointer to keep the guests strong at 11-18. After a timeout, Campbell hit free throws and Marshall finished a fastbreak at 15-18, but Salenga's 100th three-pointer in Euroleague play sustained Zalgiris. Marshall was hot, hitting a short jumper before stepping out to knock down a triple to make it 20-23. He was back, too, on the last possession, dropping a three-point fadeaway on the buzzer for a 23-24 scoreboard after 10 minutes.

Bangaly Fofona hit a game-tying free throw for Asvel to open the second quarter, so the hosts went back to him, drawing Mirza Begic's third foul. Fofona's next offensive rebound led to Laurent Foirest scoring on a drive and free throw for a 27-24 Asvel lead. Salenga finally answered for Zalgiris, going hard right, and after free throws by Marshall, hit a strike from the corner to tie 29-29. Foirest made a short jumper first, then dropped it from a little deeper, over the arc, to push Asvel up again, 34-30. Mindaugas Lukauskas added a steal and dunk to that, prompting a Zalgiris timeout at 37-32. Victor Samnick and Campbell, with a bank shot, kept Asvel a step ahead. Brown responded with a driving one-hander and free throws for Zalgiris, but Traore and Dixon matched those. When Traore scored in transition, Asvel was holding better than steady, at 45-39. Tadas Klimavicius used a tap-in to buouy the visitors, then Brown found Salenga for a rattled-in three-pointer that left a 49-44 halftime scoreboard.

Dainius Salenga - Zalgiris KaunasCampbell, Traore and Dixon kept sparking Asvel with inside baskets after the break, but Klimavicius was good for a triple and Kalnietis for a layup to keep Zalgiris as close as 55-51. However, when Campbell scored inside and Marshall followed him at 59-51, the visitors needed a timeout to talk about it. It didn't help them avoid Lukauskis making another steal-and-dunk combo for the game's first double-digit lead, 61-51. Salenga reacted with an acrobatic basket-plus-free throw at 61-54. But Asvel got all those points back at the foul line before Foirest stepped up again with a high-rising triple from the wing to break the game open as Asvel cruised to a 69-56 advantage after 30 minutes.

The fourth quarter opened as the third ended, with Foriest dropping a deft, lefty shot, this one on the baseline, and when Campbell made good on 2 free throws, Asvel was looking for a blowout at 73-56. The other story was the hosts' defense, which had completely closed its early holes in the paint and was limiting Zalgiris to wild perimeter shots. By the time Traore went to the foul line and didn't miss, Asvel was flirting with a 20-point lead, 75-56. Salenga saw the implications for too big a margin, considering his team's 19-point win in the opening game, and sparked a 2-9 reaction by Zalgiris, cutting the difference to 77-65. Asvel's scoring had stalled, so Zalgiris concetrated on keeping the difference down as the last few minutes passed with few points, assuring the hosts the win, but the visitors a future tie-break advantage, if necessary.

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Asvel Basket
"Tonight was a real team performance. The way we played was a surprise, a good one. Before the game, I didn’t think we could have such a good game. It was a mental reaction, it has to bring us confidence because we really built this win."
KRAPIKAS, GINTARAS
Zalgiris
"Tonight I don’t think about the point average, just that we’ll have to win our next games to get a chance to qualify. We knew Asvel could be a strong team at home, but we didn’t play enough defense."
