THE TAKE

A direct fight to stay alive in Group A takes place in Kaunas, Lithuania, where Zalgiris hosts Cibona on Thursday evening. It is also the rematch of the 1986 European Cup final, in which Cibona downed Zalgiris 94-82 in Budapest, Hungary, to win its second consecutive continental crown. Zalgiris ranks sixth in Group A with a 1-7 record. It will be eliminated from Top 16 contention with a loss or if Asvel Basket and FB Ulker both win. Meanwhile, Cibona is mathematically eliminated from reaching the Top 16 with a loss at Zalgiris and an Asvel victory over Barcelona, so it is safe to say that both teams are in a do-or-die situation. Cibona is facing some problems entering this game, as guard Jamont Gordon traveled to the United States for personal reasons and his availability for the game against Zalgiris is unknown. Meanwhile, power forward Vedran Vukusic has been troubled by back problems and is questionable this week. If Gordon is unavailable, Vedran Princ will see most of the minutes at point guard against Zalgiris playmaker Mantas Kalnietis, who will try to use his quickness and athleticism against him. Zygimantas Janavicius will offer court sense and driving skills off the bench. Cibona will be concerned with stopping Marcus Brown, the Euroleague's all-time top scorer. Brown will get help from off-guard Marty Pocius, small forward Dainius Salenga and up-and-coming swingman Arturas Milaknis at the wings. Brown will test his already legendary scoring skills against Marko Tomas, who has been in great shape recently. Pocius is set to battle against Bojan Bogdanovic while Salenga will not have it easy against a tough defender in Marin Rozic. Robert Troha may see extended playing time if Gordon cannot play in the end. If Vukusic is sidelined, Luksa Andric will see more minutes at power forward, where he provides deep shooting range and mobility. Dalibor Bagaric is expected to see extra playing time at center, with youngster Tomislav Zubcic and Leon Radosevic coming off the bench. Bagaric is ready to use his size and experience against Mirza Begic. Meanwhile, Andric and Radosevic will have to box out against league-leading rebounder Travis Watson. Zalgiris must play up-tempo and run its offense through Kalnietis and Brown to improve its chances of winning. Cibona must get Tomas involved and be ready to give 100% on defense. Expect a dramatic game by all means in Kaunas.

Quotes Head Coaches

BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
Zalgiris
"Cibona is our rival in the standings, so we will be focused to try to reach this win. Cibona might play a slower game, but in that way they manage to cut down their turnovers. Also they are very dangerous from beyond the arc and have good stats in offensive rebounding. Our opponents did not play a game for two weeks, so they might have adjusted their game, however we have different defense tactics and we will make sure our opponent does not surprise us. Brown and Watson have minor injuries but should be at full strength for the game."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"The game against Kaunas many will say is irrelevant, but I would not agree with that. It is important, not only in the event that Barcelona lost against Asvel, but in the event that at the end of the competition in the group closes the circle of four teams with three victories in which the point difference indeed plays an important role. Therefore, we will try to win or make the most positive possible outcome. It is true that Zalgiris changed coaches and unfortunately we have not been able to see what it looks like when Ramunas Butautas is on the bench, but we will adapt to whatever changes there are. The fact is that there are still a very good quality players like Travis Watson and Marcus Brown, who have great talent, and Šalenga and Begic. I have seen a lot of games of Martynas Pocius, who can score."

Players

MILAKNIS, ARTURAS
Zalgiris
"Every player wants to show his best for the new coach to get more playing time, so even though we might have been a bit relaxed before, now we are back to 100 percent. I think we really have a chance to beat Cibona. If we execute our new strategies well, we should reach a positive result." mi
Marcus Brown - ZalgirisZalgiris kept its Top 16 chances alive on Thursday with a 68-61 win over Cibona Zagreb in Kaunas, Lithuania. Zalgiris improved to 2-7 and visits Fenerbahce Ulker next week in a must-win contest that could propel it to the next stage. Cibona fell to the same record and hosts Asvel Basket next week in a game that will also directly impact the Top 16 race. In its first Euroleague game under new head coach Ramunas Butautas, Zalgiris led from start to finish, opening the game with a 13-0 run and never looking back. The lead reached 20 when Dainius Salenga heated up in the second quarter. Cibona showed signs of a comeback in the third quarter, but that fell apart when Luksa Andric committed his fourth foul, slammed the ball in frustration, was called for a technical and sat down, leaving Zalgiris to rebuild its lead from the line. Back-to-back threes by Marcus Brown and Mantas Kalnietis early in the fourth effectively put the game away. Brown led the winners with a season-high 20 points, Tadas Klimavicius added 12, Salenga 11 and Travis Watson posted 10 points and 8 rebounds to help his team outrebound Cibona 37-25. Marko Tomas paced Cibona with 18 points and Marin Rozic and Vedran Princ added 11 each.

The game could not have started any better for Zalgiris as Klimavicius nailed a three-pointer on its first possession and Watson scored on the next before Cibona’s Dalibor Bagaric committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Klimavicius. After 2 free throws and a Watson basket, Zalgiris was in complete control. Watson added another score on the offensive glass before Brown dished to a cutting Kalnietis to cap Zalgiris’s amazing 13-0 start. Andric finally took a ball inside, scored and was fouled, giving the visitors their first points more than three-and-a-half minutes into the game. Tomas soon added a free throw for Cibona, but free throws by Salenga and Brown put the gap at 17-4. Rozic and Brown traded baskets. Brown remained hot with a three-pointer that increased the lead to 16. Andric scored a second-chance basket and Rozic penetrated for another score as Cibona trimmed the deficit to 24-10 at the end of the quarter.

Klimavicus opened the second quarter like the first – with a three-pointer. Tomas raced down court for a layup, but Mirza Begic kept Zalgiris in control with a basket on the offensive glass. Rozic made free throws and Tomas was fouled from behind by Klimavicus after a steal. He made 2 free throws, but Cibona did not capitalize on the resulting possession and Brown punished a minute later with a three that made it 32-16. Salenga followed Rozic free throws a triple and a bank shot to up the lead to 19. Before long the host were up 20 thanks to another score by Salenga. Tomas remained Cibona’s top scoring option as he tallied 4 more points before the break to make it 39-23 at halftime.

Marko Tomas - CibonaBojan Bogdanovic scored his first points with a triple at the start of the third quarter, but the visitors soon lost Andric, who took a seat with 3 fouls. Salenga scored a jumper after grabbing an offensive rebound, but Princ bettered him with a triple. Rozic attacked the basket and earned a trip to the line, where he brought his team within 11. Rozic lobbed to Leon Radosevic for a slam as Cibona’s confidence grew. But it would be short-lived as Mirza Begic took a dish from Salenga for a power slam and Brown followed with a triple to bring the fans back. After a Cibona timeout, Marty Pocius fed a cutting Klimavicus underneath for a basket-plus-foul. Tomas hit a mid-range jumper and a little after a three. Robert Troha also made a three to cut the gap to 11. Zalgiris used a timeout to regroup. It didn’t work out at first, but Andric committed a foul going for a rebound – his fourth – and slammed the ball down in frustration. He was whistled for a technical foul – his fifth personal – and sat down. Klimavicius and Brown made free throws that allowed the hosts to go ahead 54-40 at the end of the quarter.

Princ cut to the basket for the opening score of the fourth quarter, but Watson scored on the offensive glass for Zalgiris. Prince again went through the Zalgiris defense for a layup, but Brown banked in a three as the 24-second clock expired. Prince finally missed a layup attempt and Kalnietis punished with a three that took the lead to 18. Rozic countered with a long jumper for Cibona, but Watson again scored on the offensive glass. The game took a sour note a little later for the hosts when Watson came down awkwardly on his ankle and needed to be carried off the court. Bagaric took advantage of Watson’s absence to score inside and Princ added a reverse layup. Mirza Begic fouled out for Zalgiris, but time was running out for Cibona. Brown added free throws to give Zalgiris a comfortable cushion Tomas and Tomislav Zubcic fired in late threes, but it was too little, too late as Zalgiris and its fans celebrated the victory.

Head Coaches

BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
Zalgiris
"Our opponents didn't surrender when they were down big, they kept fighting and we have to respect them for that. We played well for three-and-a-half quarters, so it's a pity we didn't end the game like we should have. But we still have chances advance to Top 16 and that is the main thing. I am a new man in the team, so I still need time to change things. Today we slowed down our offense, because we didn't want to rush too much and turn it over. So we wanted to play 24 seconds and see what we could get."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"Zalgiris deserved this victory, because they were the better team all game. But we lost by 7 points and this result keeps our chances alive to advance to the Top 16. Today we missed our two guys, Jamont Gordon and Vedran Vukusic, who were not able to play. Our younger guys are not experienced enough to improvise in offense so it hurt us."

Players

BROWN, MARCUS
Zalgiris
"It was a tough game, a lot of emotions, a lot of pressure. We handled it well but we have to play 40 minutes. We gave them offensive rebounds at the end of the game. They hit some threes and kind of broke our back. It’s good to win. but when your opponent is down like that you have to play smart the whole game. We rushed some shots, made turnovers. Our new coach is demanding more intensity from us, more defensive presence. We changed a couple things in our defensive philosophy."
TOMAS, MARKO
Cibona
"We played very bad. At the beginning of the game it was 0-13 and that was the end of the game. We tried hard to cut down this difference, but it was very hard, because we played without two players. It was too much for us. We lost by 7 points and it’s good result for us. We expect that Barca will win today against Asvel and we will have chances to advance to the Top 16."
