THE TAKE

Pau-Orthez will try to advance to the Top 16 for the first time since 2004 when it faces end-of-the-table Zalgiris Kaunas on Wednesday at 19:45 CET. Pau (6-7) joins a three-way tie for the fourth place in Group B and will go directly to the Top 16 if it beats Zalgiris. With a victory, Pau can finish anywhere between fourth and sixth place, the latter if Eldo Napoli (6-7) and Aris TT Bank (6-7) win their respective games. The important thing for Pau is that seven victories is worth the Top 16 regardless of where it finishes, because no sixth-place team in another group can reach that total. Oddly enough, Pau can finish as high as fourth with a loss, too. Indeed, regardless of its own result, Pau will advance to the Top 16 if Benetton Treviso (7-6) beats Napoli. Zalgiris (2-11), meanwhile, has run out of chances to advance, but is on a high after breaking its 10-game losing streak with a home win over Aris last week. Zalgiris has missed playmaker Marko Popovic (15.1 ppg., 4.9 apg.) in the last six games and he is not expected to play against Pau-Orthez. Without Popovic in action, Mantas Kalnietis (4.3 ppg.) and Vidas Ginevicius (3.3 ppg.) are sharing the point guard duties, trying to find shooters Marcelinho Machado (7.6 ppg.) and Kirk Penney (7.5 ppg., 46.2% 3FG) at both wings. The late addition of combo guard DeJuan Collins (11 points last week) have a new dimension to the Lithuanian powerhouse. Zalgiris will have a tough test trying to contain Aaron Miles (9 ppg., 4 apg.), one of the best pass-first point guards in the competition. Meanwhile, Melvins Sanders (11.3 ppg., 70% 3FG), C.C. Harrison (8.4 ppg.) and Cedric Ferchaud (4.4 ppg.) will test their shooting skills against Penney and Machado. Zalgiris has its own x-factor in Jonas Maciulis (13 ppg., 4.8 rpg.), but Pau will try to answer with explosive forward Michael Bauer (9.5 ppg., 1.5 bpg.), who change a game with his defense and intensity. Pau runs its offense through the starting frontcourt due of Michael Wright (15.5 ppg., 4.8 rpg.) and Britton Johnsen (12.4 ppg., 63.8% 2FG). Wright provides low-post know-how while Johnsen adds range and versatility. Wright will go against legendary center Tanoka Beard (14.3 ppg., 9.7 rpg.), while Johnsen and Ian Mahinmi (4.1 ppg., 3 rpg.) will have an interesting matchup against Paulius Jankunas (9.9 ppg., 7.3 rpg.) and Hanno Mottola (11.5 ppg., 54.5% 3FG), who can fill up the basket if given half a chance. Pau is the favourite but it also has all the pressure, so expect Zalgiris to fight hard in its last Euroleague game of the season.

Quotes Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Pau-Orthez
"We have to produce a great effort to end this first part of the Euroleague and to earn a qualification to the Top 16. This game will be a big fight and we must defend our territory. Our concentration on the goal and on the means to get it will be very important. We must keep in mind that Kaunas is a good team that plays clever basketball. The position of Kaunas in this group does not reflect their quality, so let's go forward with care and with great motivation."
GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"Pau is a team that plays better in the Euroleague then in its domestic league. Sometimes it seems that they are much more motivated when they play Euroleague games. Pau has a lot of quick and athletic players. This team is very balanced. They have a strong center and great perimeter shooters. It will be really tough to play against them. It will be the last game in the Euroleague this season for my team. We are little disappointed about that because our primary goal, the Top 16, wasn't achieved. After this game we have to focus on other important games that are awaiting us in our domestic leagues."

Players

GREER, RICARDO
Pau-Orthez
"This game is maybe the most important of the season since it can open us the door to the Top 16. The task will not be easy. It is a privilege for us to depend only on our result and to play a decisive game at home with the help of our fans. We have some experience in the team, so I hope that it will help us to go into the game with concentration and determination. The only solution is to win!"
PENNEY, KIRK
Zalgiris
"We played against Pau in the first round and we were very close to winning that game, but they made some really tough shots down the stretch and they won. Their perimeter shooters were sharp that night and their point guard did a great job. Inside, they had the presence of Michael Wright, who was very consistent for them. You cannot focus your defense on one or another player because on the different nights they have different go-to guys, but we have to always keep an eye on Wright or Britton Johnsen because they play great on most nights. However, I think we play much better basketball right now. We had some good wins lately. It's important for us continuing to develop."
Michael Wright - EB Pau-Orthez Pau-Orthez secured a berth in the Top 16 on Wednesday night with a 68-56 win over Zalgiris Kaunas. Michael Wright scored 7 during a game-clinching 11-0 run late in the fourth quarter that came just after Zalgiris had cut the gap to 55-54. Pau finishes the regular season with a 7-7 record and fourth place in Group C. Wright ended up with a game-high 24 points – including 13 in the fourth quarter. Aaron Miles added 14 points and 6 assists and C.C. Harrison finished with 13 for the hosts. Tanoka Beard had a double-double before the second quarter was over and finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds for Zalgiris, which ended its Euroleague campaign with a 2-12 record. Jonas Maciulis had 9 points and 8 rebounds and Marcelinho Machado added 8 in defeat. The game was a tight affair with countless lead changes throughout the first half. Miles and Harrison hit back-to-back triples to take the lead for good late in the third quarter. Zalgiris remained close however, thanks to solid play by DeJuan Collins, but Wright stepped up with the game on the line and guarenteed the win and at least six more games for Pau this season.

Zalgiris won the opening tip, but only after a sloppy start for both teams did Miles score the game's first points. Maciulis put Zalgiris on the board on the next possession. Miles penetrated for a 6-2 lead, but Machado put the visitors on top 6-7 with the game's first three-pointer, only for Wright to restore Pau's lead on the next play. Beard and Wright traded baskets before Paulius Jankunas and Maciulis made it 10-14 for the guests. Thiery Rupert hit a jumper fresh off the bench and Miles quickly tied the score with a fade-away jumper. Beard corralled Kirk Penney's missed three and scored on the offensive glass to close the first period with Zalgiris up 14-16.

Marcelinho Machado - Zalgiris KaunasMelvin Sanders drained a three to start the second quarter, before Maciulis answered with three the hard way for the guests. The lead continued to switch hands as Ian Mahinmi scored 4 straight for Pau and Jankunas came right back with a layup to make it 21-22 midway through the period. After Zalgiris's Mantas Kalnietis made one from the line, Sanders tied the score at 23-23. Wright scored an off-balanced layup plus the resulting foul shot for a three-point play, however Beard's next basket gave him a double-double with two minutes left in the first half. Sanders's layup was met by Hanno Mottola's slam to keep the visitors ahead 30-31 at halftime.

Miles started the second half with a jumper, however Machado's hot hand reeled off a triple followed by a jumper for a 32-36 Zalgiris advantage. Pau stormed back with Miles setting Mahinmi up for a dunk and then dishing to Wright for back-to-back scores as Pau went ahead. Beard stopped the run and tied the game from the line and a minute later scored twice more from the charity stripe for a 40-41 Zalgiris lead at the midway point of the third quarter. Miles responded with a three-pointer and Harrison followed suit. DeJuan Collins kept Zalgiris close with a layup, but after a scoring lull, Miles drove for a layup and Harrison's free throw ended the period with the hosts ahead 49-44.

After a slow start to the closing period, Mottola's second chance basket kept Zalgiris close. Both teams continued to miss until Ricardo Greer picked Mottola's pocket and went in for an uncontested layup and a 51-46 Pau lead. Beard and Wright canceleld each other's baskets out before Penney's triple made it 53-51 with 5 minutes left on the clock. Penney's free throws and a Collins layup cut the gap to a single point, but Miles made one from the line to hold the narrow lead. After Mahinmi swatted Collins's shot, Pau called timeout to plan for the closing minutes. When play resumed, Harrison fed Wright inside for a score and Machado turned the ball over on the resulting possession, leaving Zalgiris to call timeout to try and save the game. Wright scored a free throw and after another Zalgiris turnover, Harrison's basket-plus-foul made it 62-54 and started to signal the end. Wright added two more baskets to increase the lead to 12 as the local fans celebrated a big win.

Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Pau-Orthez
“First of all, I want to congratulate Kaunas for their investment in the game. They came to Pau to play a big game with ambition. Now I want to express my pride towards my players who made a big effort after a difficult period with many players victim of a virus. We played with a big heart for 40 minutes and we found the solution during the last minutes. We finish with the fourth position 4 in this difficult group. I remember that there were very few that believed in the Top 16 after the draw in September."
GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
“I want to congratulate Pau-Orthez for their qualification. They deserve the Top 16. We came here with desire to win and with ambitions to honor to the competition. We resisted for 35 minutes, but we lost too many balls in the important moments. I am proud of the behavior of my players tonight."

Players

WRIGHT, MICHAEL
Pau-Orthez
“It was a great game and Kaunas was far from being an easy challenge. It was very tense during most parts of the game. We gave the maximum and we got the reward in the last 4 minutes with the great help of our fans. It is a big pleasure to take part in the Top 16. I think that we deserve this position and we could offer a present to our super fans."
MOTTOLA, HANNO
Zalgiris
“We played with the maximum of intensity and motivation. We were not very far from the victory, but we missed too many open shoots. This game sums up well our games in the Euroleague this year. We are in the game most of the time and we missed something.”
