THE TAKE

Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas hopes to remain among the leaders in Group G as the Spanish team plays host to Panionios On Telecoms. Coach Salvador Maldonado's Gran Canaria improved to 2-1 with a road victory against previously undefeated BC Kalev/Cramo. The Spaniards gave up just 24 points in the first half while out-rebounding the Estonians 45-35 including 20 offensive rebounds. Maldonado's defense also held Kalev to 38% shooting while forcing 20 turnovers. The Spaniards also did a good job against Kalev's low post tandem of Travis Reed and Kristjan Kangur, who combined for 29 points but shot 7-of-19 from inside the arc. Shooting guard Carl English led the way for Gran Canaria with 21 points while all 10 players who played scored at least three points and grabbed a rebound as no one played more than 23 minutes. That kind of balance will go a long way against Panionios. The Greeks blew a fourth quarter lead before losing in overtime to Asvel Basket at home and drop to 1-2. Shooting guard Ioannis Kalampokis scored 28 points to lead five players in double figures - including power forward Levon Kendall (11 points) and shooting guard Ivan Zoroski (10) off the bench. But Nenad Markovic's team just did not have the presence inside against Asvel, getting out-rebounded 36-22 while watching the French grab 16 offensive boards. Markovic may be satisfied with the offensive output, especially from his reserves, but the lack of will be a concern. To help the cause Markovic added a big man with plenty of experience in power forward Haris Mujezinovic, who won the 2004 ULEB Cup title with Lietuvos Rytas of Lithuania. And the Bosnian will be needed against Gran Canaria.
