THE TAKE

ASK Riga hopes to right its course and even its record as the Latvian side welcome Pau-Orthez in a battle of 1-2 teams in Group H. Coach Ramunas Butautas's Riga team lost a tight battle at Artland Dragons last week for its second straight defeat. The Latvians' struggles from three-point range (4-of-18 - 22%) and free throw line (13-of-19 - 68%) proved the difference. Butautas's troops were unable to take advantage of 21 Artland turnovers - partly because Riga was out-rebounded 31-21. Power forward Aerick Sanders and reserve center Raitis Grafs each scored 13 points while small forward Sandis Valters added 11 and shooting guard Dwayne Broyles had 10 points while also missing the potential game-winning desperation three-pointer at the buzzer. Butautas must build back up his team's confidence as it next faces a desperate Pau-Orthez side. The French team dropped to 1-2 after getting a 36-point thrashing at Kyiv. The loss resulted in Pau sacking coach Olivier Cousin and replacing him with his former assistant Laurent Mopsus. In Cousin's final game, Pau was out-rebounded 48-24 and watched the Ukrainians grab 25 offensive rebounds. Pau also committed 22 turnovers and scored just 37 points through three quarters. One of the very few bright spots for the team was power forward Terence Dials scoring 17 points and small forward David Young coming off the bench for 11 points. But Mopsus has plenty of work to do to bring Pau back into prominence. A positive result at Riga would help.

Players

Five players scored in double figures as ASK Riga evened its record in Group H at 2-2 following a convincing 80-60 victory at home over Pau Orthez. Raitis Grafs and Dwayne Broyles each tallied 14 points while Sandis Valters and Aaron Bramlett both had 12 for the victors, who also got 10 points from Gatis Jahovics. And Aerick Sanders added nine points, 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals for the Latvians. The French side Pau dropped to 1-3 in Group H as the club failed to respond to new coach Laurent Mopsus, who replaced the sacked Olivier Cousin. David Young scored 16 points but the remainder of the Pau starting five tallied just 17 points. Cedric Ferchaud had 11 points and Ludovic Vaty tallied eight points and 10 rebounds off the bench in a losing effort.

Broyles started the scoring with the first six points of the game and Valters's three-pointer made it 9-0 before Terence Dials finally got the guests on the scoreboard. Bramlett's basket made it 15-2 which Vaty cut to 15-5 on a three-point play. And it was 22-5 before Ferchaud's three-pointer cut the deficit to 22-8 after one period. Vaty scored the first basket of the second frame only to have Valters answer with a three-ball. After Young trimmed the margin to 27-18, Grafs scored two baskets to push the gap to 33-18. And Dairis Bertans's three-pointer gave the Latvians a 36-22 going into the break. Baskets by Vaty and Dials to start the third made it a 10-point game, and Young's free throws made it 37-28. But Bramlett came up with two scores and Valters's three-pointer pushed the advantage back up to 46-28. Shaun Fenn's three-ball cut the deficit to 15 points - 50-35 - and Maxiliano Stanic's long ball made it 54-39 going into the fourth. Two Grafs foul shots opened the final period and Jahovics's basket increased the gap to 58-39. The French were able to trim the deficit back down to 16 on Young's score for 60-44 but Valters answered with another three-pointer. And the lead was back up to 23 points after Broyes's long ball and Sandis Buskevics's basket for 68-45. Pau refused to die and Ferchaud hit another trey and Young's basket left the score 68-52. The Latvians pulled away again and another Ferchaud three-ball only eased the damage down the stretch.

Head Coaches

BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
ASK Riga
"The final score did not show the course of the match. The match was very hard. We were preparing very seriously. Today we won on the basis of good defense. I am satisfied with the score of the team. Today on the court, each player did his job well. Now we must get ready for the next match."
MOPSUS, LAURENT
Pau-Orthez
"Because our plane was delayed, we arrived in Riga only at 4 a.m. We started the match very badly and it also settled the match. I do not mention the late arrival as an excuse of the bad beginning, but as one of reasons. In the second half, we were playing better but we could not save the match anymore."

Players

SANDERS, AERICK
ASK Riga
"Today we played without five players. In this tournament, each game is very important, especially if it is a home match. This time defense played the main role. We are happy that again we have balance in the won and loss column."
