THE TAKE

If Hapoel Galil Elyon hopes at all to reach the elimination round it must win at home against Group E leader Triumph Lyubertsy. Coach Eli Kaneti's Galil Elyon lost its third straight game at Swans Gmunden to fall to 1-5. The Israeli side hit 50% from the floor but allowed Swans to shoot 53% for the game. In addition, Hapoel also made 15-of-25 (60%) from the foul stripe compared to Gmunden's 21-of-26 (81%). Shooting guard Doron Sheffer poured in 28 points in his second game in the starting five but none of the other starters scored in double figures though small forward Gil Mossinson added 19 points off the bench. Galil Elyon knows its back is seriously against the wall with Fribourg and Gmunden tied for third place - two games better than Hapoel at 3-3. Triumph Lyubertsy, for its part, used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Buducnost at home to move to 5-1. Coach Stanislav Eremin's team shot 52% from the field and held Buducnost to 46%, including 5-of-22 (23%) from long range. But Lyubertsy's nightmares from the foul line continued, hitting just 21-of-31 (68%), which actually raised its overall season percentage to 59% from the line. Center Ognjen Askrabic led four players in double figures with 15 points while point guard Mire Chatman had 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists but also committed 5 turnovers. Triumph dominated Galil Elyon in Week Two, winning the rebound battle 47-25 in surviving 21 turnovers. A victory for Eremin's team secures it at least a one-game lead.

Mire Chatman - Triumph Lyubertsy Five players scored in double figures as Triumph Lyubertsy improved to 6-1 atop Group E with a comfortable 73-82 victory at Hapoel Galil Elyon. Sergey Toporov led the way with 17 points while Fedor Dmitriev and Terrell Lyday each added 14 points. Mire Chatman had 11 points and Ognjen Askrabic chipped in 10 points for the Russian team, which took control of the game with a 4-12 run to start the fourth period. Triumph hosts Swans Gmunden next week. Hapoel Galil Elyon fell to 1-6, wasting a 16-point, 10 rebound showing by Gil Mossinson while Mike Campbell added 15 points. Yogev Ohayon added 12 points and Cliff Brown had 11. Galil Elyon looks for victory number two next week at Antwerp Giants.

Campbell started the game with a three-pointer and Aaron Nixon's long ball made it 8-0 early. But Askrabic hit two baskets and Chatman's score gave Triumph the lead 8-9. Campbell and Ohayon each hit baskets as the hosts pulled ahead 16-11. Chatman answered with a three-ball but Campbell's triple left Galil Elyon ahead 22-15. It was 23-17 after one period. Uros Slokar opened the second quarter for Triumph but Brown extended the lead to 27-19. Chatman answered with another three-ball and trey by Dmitriev and Lyday evened the game at 31-31. The game went back and forth and another Lyday three-ball made it 38-42 before Brown knotted things at 42-42 at the break. Slokar opened the second half to give Lyubertsy the lead back and a Lyday three-ball and baskets by Dmitriev and Askrabic pushed the advantage to 48-55. Brown stopped the bleeding temporarily with a three-point play for 51-55. But Lyday's free throw left the guests up 54-59 going into the fourth. Toporov hit the first score of the final period and scored six points and Chatman knocked down a jumper to finish a 4-12 run to start the fourth and build a 58-71 advantage. Mossinson and Campbell hit baskets to make it 62-71, but Dmitriev converted a three-point play and Toporov nailed two baskets as Triumph kept the hosts at bay, 67-78. Jai Lamar Lewis cut the deficit to 70-78 with a three-pointer but Dmitriev and Toporov each made a foul shot and Lyday made two free throws to re-establish a 70-82 lead. And Campbell's three-pointer was too little too late.

"We focused on how to come together and look good. We took the floor with a lot of motivation, essentially to prove to ourselves that we deserve to be in a better spot. We just tried to put everything else aside tonight to play our best game."
