THE TAKE

Top 16 Group E opens on Wednesday evening when as Tau Ceramica welcomes Asseco Prokom to Vitoria, Spain. Tau was its regular season group champion while Prokom advanced to the Top 16 with the lowest record in the competition, 2-8. None of that matters now, however, as both teams start from scratch again fighting for two playoff spots. Tau won its last five Euroleague games while Prokom hopes to break its seven-game losing streak. The game features two of the best three regular season scorers as Igor Rakocevic of Tau will face David Logan of Prokom. Rakocevic leads a deep, versatile backcourt that also offers pass-first playmaker Pablo Prigioni - a former Euroleague assists champion, defensive stopper Sergi Vidal and point guard Vlado Ilievski, who is ready to make his first Euroleague appearance in a Tau uniform. Prokom also has some news at point guard, as Tyrone Brazelton has replaced Aleksej Nesovic, while Daniel Ewing is questionable after missing his team's last three games. Prokom will be concerned with stopping small forward Pete Mickeal, who faces a tough matchup against Koko Archibong. Fernando San Emeterio of Tau and Przemyslaw Zamojski of Prokom are ready to offer intensity and shooting range off their respective benches. The battle in the paint will be equally important, as Tau features All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter as its main threat. Three-point specialist Mirza Teletovic, however, sat out in his team's Spanish League game against Unicaja and is questionable against Prokom. If Teletovic remains sidelined, expect Will McDonald and Stanko Barac to see extended playing time. Splitter will have a difficult matchup against Pat Burke, who will try to open the court with his deep range to create more space for Brazelton and Logan. McDonald and Barac are ready for a big battle against athletic power forwards Filip Dylewicz and Ronnie Burrell, as well as center Adam Hrycaniuk. Prokom must get Logan involved and try to power the offensive boards to keep its options alive. Tau must trust Rakocevic, who is simply unstoppable this season, as well as get Burke into foul trouble against Splitter. Even though Tau is the heavy favorite, expect Prokom to fight hard in Vitoria on Wednesday.

GAME NOTES

Tau Ceramica
  • Tau Ceramica guard Vlado Ilievski, who joined the team midseason from Union Olimpija, could play for his fifth Euroleague team if he plays for Tau this week.
  • Tau Ceramica was the top scoring team in the regular season with 91.6 points per game and had two of the top five scorers in the Euroleague. Guard Igor Rakocevic was the league’s leading scorer with 20 points per game and center Tiago Splitter was fifth at 15.4 points.
  • Rakocevic has made at least 1 three-pointer in 15 consecutive Euroleague games and needs just 1 more three-pointer to reach 200 for his career.
  • Tau is 4-0 all-time against Asseco Prokom, winning twice in the regular season in each of the past two seasons.
Asseco Prokom
  • Center Pat Burke has improved his production over the course of the season, averaging 15 points and 10.7 rebounds in his last three Euroleague games.
  • Forward Filip Dylewicz scored a Euroleague career-high 20 points in his last game in Week 10 against Panathinaikos.
  • Asseco Prokom has lost 10 consecutive Euroleague road games dating back to November 2007 when it beat Virtus Bologna 75-87 in Italy. Not a single player that scored in that game is on Prokom’s current roster.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"Before we start the competition, we all have the same opportunities and ambitions. I don't think Prokom will let us win without a big fight. Now we start a new tournament with the aim of getting one of the first two spots and make it to the Playoffs and it won't be an easy task. The four teams of our group are very strong teams that have the same possibilities. Prokom will be a tough challenge because they are a good team, with good and athletic players. We cannot forget of that if we want to win, we must focus on playing good defense and stay concentrated."

"I'd say that we are happy with the group we are going to play in, as we can see that the other ones are a little bit tougher, but there is no easy teams at this point of the competition. Prokom signed new players, like many other teams and it won't be easy at all. It's true that the key for this game will be our mentality, how we approach to the game because now there are no place for mistakes. Each game is a key one. They play without pressure and can become very dangerous. Coach Dusko Ivanovic is experienced enough and I'm sure he won't let us take it in a relaxed fashion."
Mirza Teletovic - Tau CeramicaTau Ceramica won its sixth straight Euroleague game on Wednesday by crushing Asseco Prokom 99-77 at the Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, Spain. Tau took control early as league-leading scorer Igor Rakocevic had 11 in a 20-2 first-period charge that gave the hosts a 26-7 lead. Prokom never quit and its backcourt got the team back within single digits, but Tau always had an answer and the outcome was never seriously in doubt. Rakocevic was one of three Tau players to score at least 20 in the convincing win. Power forward Mirza Teletovic hit 4 three-pointers en route to a career-high 22 points and Sergi Vidal set a career-best with 20. Rakocevic also scored 20. Will McDonald, starting in place of the injured Tiago Splitter, added 11 in addition to 6 blocks, which were both a personal best and a Tau record. Stanko Barac had 10 rebounds for the winners. Daniel Ewing paced Prokom with 19 points, Ronnie Burrell added 16, David Logan 15 and Pat Burke posted 12 points and 11 rebounds in defeat.

David Logan - Asseco ProkomWith an unusual starting five due to the absence of Splitter, Tau struggled a bit in early going. Despite of a pair of layups by Rakocevic and Pete Mickeal, the Polish champs looked ready for the challenge thanks to a three-pointer by Logan and a fastbreak dunk by Burrell. But the 6-5 score was nothing but an illusion, as the hosts needed less than a minute to turn the game upside down. Pablo Prigioni started the fire with a three-point bomb, followed by a dunk-plus-foul play by McDonald. Another layup by Rakocevic forced head coach Tomas Pacesas to call timeout after three-and-a-half minutes as the hosts threatened to break the game open early, 14-5. Rakocevic came up big after the break with a three-pointer-plus-foul play, showing Prokom that it would take more than a timeout to change the trend. Tau increased the advantage step by step, even though Prokom tried to slow down the hosts with a soft zone defense when the score reached a 26-9 lead after six minutes. Nothing changed, though, as Tau kept finding open shots and using great accuracy to finish the first quarter with a comfortable edge, 34-15.

Prokom started the second period in a stronger fashion, showing more aggressiveness on defense and taking advantage of Tau’s rotations. The hosts weren’t able to keep the same high level with the second string and that was exploited by Prokom to reduce the difference to 36-24 behind Ewing, Tyrone Brazelton and Burke. Rakocevic returned Tau to form with a three, but the Prokom backcourt took over and Burke and Burrell were pretty active at both ends. The visitors scored easy points by running the court as fast as possible, stunning Tau. Head coach Dusko Ivanovic decide to remove Barac from the rotation and used Mickeal at power forward, but it didn’t improve Tau’s performance much. Ewing made it a 10-point game with one minute left, 47-37, before a couple of free throws by Vidal closed the first half with a 51-39 Tau lead.

Sergi Vidal - Tau CeramicaThe visitors kept rocking after the intermission, with Burke and Burrell scoring inside and Ewing capping a 0-7 run with a three to make it a 5-point game. Tau reacted immediately with another three by Prigioni, but the game wasn’t as easy as it was for the hosts in the first period. Both teams exchanged baskets, as nobody was able to take control of the pace of the game. The hosts fed Vidal and Mickeal for scoring, while Prokom went to Logan outside. The differences remained steady, as the last attempt to pull away made by the hosts was aborted by 5 points in a row by Logan to reach the end of the third period with a 69-58 advantage for Tau.

Vidal boosted the hosts with a three-pointer and a layup right after the break, but he found no help from his teammates to finish off the game. Prokom was able to prevent the hosts from playing their game thanks to Ewing, Logan and Burrell, who kept the Polish champs in the game. But the lack of accurate replacements ended up limiting Pacesas’s team. Once the visitors’ three-pointers started to dry up, Tau found no resistance. And after Burrell hit a three to make it 81-69 midway through the last quarter, nothing worked for Prokom. The hosts increased their defensive activity and secured the boards, outscoring visitors 18-7 in the last five minutes and burying Prokom’s last hopes in the blink of an eye.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"Every game in the Top 16 will be difficult. If we don't take that into account and we don't play at a high level, we can lose. It's a hard way to qualify, and every player must know that without concentrating, we will be risking our chances to make it to the quarterfinals. We were not at the place I want us to be. You can see the stats and you will find that we stole 2 balls and turned over 14. That means we played without aggressiveness. We knew they play great in transition and we let them score 40 points in transition. We won, but this is not the way the team has to play."
PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"I think the first quarter decided the whole game. We started bad, we played bad basketball, we felt big pressure. We are a young team that lacks experience and we played nervous and the difference increased too quickly. Later we managed to react and fight, and I think we played better. I’m happy about how we fought against one of the best teams in Europe. Every team we will face in the Top 16 will be pretty tough to beat."

Players

TELETOVIC, MIRZA
Tau Ceramica
"It's quite important to win the Top 16 opener, because all players gain confidence. We won tonight and that's the most important thing. I struggled a bit physically in the beginning. I felt I was without energy, but later I was able to recover. We played poorly in some moments of the game, but once we improved our defense everything got easier."
BURKE, PAT
Asseco Prokom
"I think it was a good game. We faced a typical Tau. They are strong team that plays really hard all the time. We managed to play hard too, with good energy and in some moments I think we were able to surprise Tau. Maybe someone can think that we are not good enough because we qualified with only 2 wins in the first stage of the competition, but I think we played well tonight and I believe we can play better in our next games."
