THE TAKE

Third place is up for grabs in Group C when Spirou Charleroi hosts BC Hemofarm Stada. Coach Eddy Casteels's Charleroi shot 55% from the floor but lost at Hanzevast to fall to 2-3. The game was decided at the free throw line where Hanzevast hit 22-of-26 (85%) of its foul shots while Charleroi made just 10-of-18 (56%). Power forward Wes Wilkinson's 15 points paced three Spirou players in double figures but the Belgian team got out-rebounded 33-25. Casteels will not need to motivate his players very much after the disappointing showing on the road. And now the team faces a Hemofarm group which won at home against Charleroi in Week One. Casteels's team shot 55% in that game as well but committed 18 turnovers and made just 10-of-15 (67%) from the free throw line. Hemofarm meanwhile fell to 3-2 with a solid loss at undefeated Galatasaray. Coach Miroslav Nikolic's Hemofarm shot just 41% from the field and watched the Turkish team hit 53% from the floor. Guard Stefan Markovic had 19 points and playmaker Nebojsa Joksimovic had 18 points and 5 assists for the Serb side. But center Vladan Vukosavljevic was held to just 8 points - nine below his average coming into the game. If Vukosavljevic can get back on track, Hemofarm could improve to 4-2 and be in tie for second place. Otherwise the club is even with Spirou at 3-3 and in for a long dog fight to qualify for the elimination round.

Players

BC Hemofarm Stada emerged victorious from the Spiroudome in Belgium on Tuesday night by getting rid of Spirou Charleroi, 64-78. The guests were led by Goran Jagodnik in the first half to get a solid, comfortable lead, but late in the last period, the hosts rallied back to minus 10, but that was all they could do. The win lifts Hemofarm to a 4-2 record in Group C while Spirou Charleroi drops to 2-4 to tie with CSU Asesoft. Vladan Vukosavljevic led the winners with his 22 points, Jagodnik added 13, Nebojsa Joksimovic had 11 and Miljan Pavkovic tallied 10. For the hosts, Tremmell Darden had 13 points, Len Matela bagged 12 and Andre Riddick added 10.

Two baskets by Goran Jagodnik were a good start for Hemofarm and soon Vladan Vukosavljevic made it 2-9 for the guests. Andre Riddick tried it from the paint for Charleroi but the hosts kept froging a bigger lead little by little, 6-14. Tremmell Darden and Len Matela started contributing for Spirou but Jagodnik and Vukosavljevic made it a double-digit lead for 9-19, which was maintained until the end of the first quarter, 11-21 for Hemofarm. Charleroi showed some signs of improvement in the first steps of the second quarter, as Wes Wilkinson's three trimmed it down to 7 points, but Jagodnik copied him to restore the 10 points at 20-30. The hosts had only disehd one assist against the 5 by Hemofarm, and the 1 of 6 free throws at that point didn't help either. Jagodnik was on a scoring streak and added a new three as Matela fought for the hosts. But it was not enough as Vukosavljevic scored for 26-45 to make it look like Hemofarm had the game already under its belly, but Adam Hall made a basket plus foul play to leave the 29-45 at the break. The pace was slow at the beginning of the third quarter and that played in favor of Hemofarm, who maintained the gap without much effort. The scoring was balanced throughout the third period at the end of which the scoreboard showed a 44-63 for Hemofarm. Seven points combined by Tremmell Darden and Jonathan Tabu allowed Charleroi to get as close as 56-67, to force Hemofarm's timeout. Mistakes in offense arrived for both teams at that point but that was only good for Hemofarm who saw how the final buzzer was getting closer. Three free throws by Miljan Pavkovic were the last breath that Hamofarm needed to reach a valuable fourth win that leaves the team in a good position with only four games remaining.

Head Coaches

CASTEELS, EDDY
Spirou Charleroi
"We obviously missed confidence. My team prefer to play away for the moment: it isn't normal. But on the other side we all know basket is a game of fundamentals. And there is a country where the play between two players and the pick and roll is mastered like nowhere else... Vrsac proved how much basketball is a simple game! On our side, this is a question of mentality. We have athletes but they missed head for the moment. It was obvious when there were 5 minutes left: we had to go to the basket to get fouls and we chose to shoot too quick from outside. My players are afraid. This is my job to show them how to get back. We are going to recover even if we know we have to do it quick. We still can get the fourth place and we proved we could cope with every team in our group, so if we can reach it we will be satisfied."
NIKOLIC, MIROSLAV
BC Hemofarm Stada
"We prepared really well for this game as we knew this was a crucial one and it was reflected in our organization, which made the difference during the first half. Then we faced some problems but we got good sensations in this gym and this was the first time we played well the pick and rolls with five players. Charleroi didn't manage to answer it."
JAGODNIK, GORAN
BC Hemofarm Stada
"We absolutely had to win in order to get the qualification, which is our target and is achieved. We played an excellent first half, that allowed us to lead by 16. We the controlled the game in defense, what prevent Charleroi to come back close: even at the end, we never really panicked."
