THE TAKE

Top 16 Group E gets underway on Wednesday when regular season Group B champ Lietuvos Rytas hosts Group A runner-up Tau Ceramica at the Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania. Both teams are legitamite Final Four contenders, but also know the potential pitfalls a slow start to the Top 16 can provide. While Tau has experienced this stage with great success – it has reached each of the last three Final Fours – L. Rytas is in the Top 16 for only the second time and struggled in its first try two seasons ago. Ironically, its head coach then is now on the Tau sidelines, Neven Spahija, along with one of the key players from that L. Rytas squad, sharpshooter Simas Jasaitis. The hosts will be unveiling a new face for the game, big man Jackson Vroman, who like the team’s starting playmaker, spent last season in Spain and is familiar with Tau. One of the most important factors for L. Rytas figures to be how quickly Vroman, who takes over for the injured Matt Nielsen, can mesh with the rest of the team’s big men, particularly Marijonas Petravicius and Kenan Bajramovic. They will go up against a deep Tau frontcourt led by Tiago Splitter, Mirza Teletovic and Will McDonald. An intriguing matchup awaits at point guard, where Price and reserve Jared Jordan will compete with Tau’s Zoran Planinic and Pablo Prigioni. Meanwhile the hosts’ Mindaugas Lukauskis and Arturas Jomantas will hope to wear down Tau’s leading scorer, Igor Rakocevic and at the small forward spot, L. Rytas’s Chuck Eidson brings the complete package against Pete Mickeal. This game between the two group favorites could set the tone in Group E. A road win for Tau would suddenly make it the group favorite, while a convincing performance from L. Rytas, which was 6-1 at home in the regular season, would prove its regular season run was no fluke. With both teams sure to be hungry, the game could come down to the key matchup of Price against Prigioni/Planinic. If the L. Rytas point guard can hold his own, score and create for big men Petravicius and Vroman inside, L. Rytas will have a big advantage. But if the size of Planinic or defensive skills of Prigioni prove to be too much for Price, the advantage would swing to the visitors, who with their knowledge of Vilnius through Spahija and Jasaitis have a distinct edge already.

Quotes Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"It's a totally new phase of the competition so it's a big challenge for us. There's no looking back. We want to make it as good as it gets and qualify for the quarterfinals. It is going to be a great challenge as we seek to continue our game we played in the regular season. Tau Ceramica is a top Euroleague team and it has always been one. They have huge experience and a lot of possibilities in the rotation. But we must take points, especially at home. The thing is not to let them play their game all 40 minutes. It's a big task, but I think we can do it. Yeah, they had a tough weekend in Spain but we must mind our own business. We have a tough schedule, too, and must work on our problems first. We have to think how to stop their playmakers, two-meter tall Planinic and Prigioni and we have already thought of effective match-ups."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"A win in Vilnius would mean a very big step to qualify as first in our group. They know this game is quite important too, but it won't be definitive because we both have to play in Turkey and Greece. For me, the most important thing is to play a good game. We had one day to prepare the game after the Cup and the best thing for me is that we got no injuries. We are going to Lithuania with a good disposition and eager to play. It won't be easy game as we face a very strong contender, with lots of quality and intensity in its game. On the other side, we are a team that feels pretty tired after a demanding tournament like the Spanish Cup. They got talent, a good roster and their outcome in the first round of the Euroleague tells everything about them. As an organization, I think they are amoing the best five or six ones in Europe. For me, this game will be a bit different compared tothe others, as I had very good time when worked for them."

"We don't know everything about Tau Ceramica as of now, but we will soon have a thorough view on them. But, still, this game is very important. Not only because it is already Top 16, where every team is strong, but also because it is the first game in this phase. We feel we must start strong so we surely are under a bit of pressure. Tau Ceramica just played and lost the Spanish Cup last weekend, but I don't think they will be tired. Nor that they will want to bounce back with a win in Vilnius too much. Both us and them are professionals."
PRIGIONI, PABLO
Tau Ceramica
"The season is so hard and intense that it gives you no time to get very upset after such a painful loss in the Cup final. Even if we had won we wouldn't have been able to enjoy it a lot becase in two days we were playing in Germany, and now we are going to Lithuania to play a key game. I think that winning this game can mean a decisive step towards the Euroleague quarterfinals. To win there in Vilnius would be fantastic, but if we finally cannot do it, we must be into the game and get a good point margin for the second leg. We must learn from what we went through the Cup, keeping the good things we did, especially in deffense, and improve a bit playing offense."
Tiago Splitter - Tau Ceramica Tau Ceramica took a major step towards reaching the Quarterfinal Playoffs from Group E by edging Lietuvos Rytas 81-84 in Vilnius, Lithuania, on Wednesday. Tau got the first road win in the group and will tie for first place at the end of this round. Meanwhile, L. Rytas will need to start winning right away to keep its playoff options alive. Tiago Splitter led the winners with 17 points, while Zoran Planinic and Mirza Teletovic each added 11 for Tau. Hollis Price led L. Rytas with 23 points, but committed a key turnover with 6.3 seconds remaining. Marijonas Petravicius posted a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, Kenan Bajramovic added 15 points and Mindaugas Lukauskis had 10 for the hosts. Splitter and Pete Mickeal fueled a 0-8 opening run in the second quarter that gave Tau an18-26 edge. Gabe Mouneke and an unstoppable Splitter stepped up for Tau to boost the guests' lead to 33-44 at halftime. L. Rytas fixed its offense after the break, as a 10-0 run that Petravicius capped with a put-back basket made it a one-point game, 46-47. Tau found a go-to guy in Planinic, while Teletovic struck twice from downtown to restore a 57-65 Tau lead after 30 minutes. L. Rytas did not give up, however, as a late 7-0 run that Petravicius capped with a layup brought the hosts within 78-81 with 44.5 seconds remaining. Mickeal shined with a critical put-back layup with 22 seconds remaining. Barjamovic sank a triple, Igor Rakocevic missed free throws, but Price committed a turnover with 6.3 ticks remaining. Mickeal hit a free throw and Price missed a desperation midcourt shot, allowing Tau to escape with a win.

Some 11,000 fans greeted both teams starting the Euroleague Top 16, but they were quickly silenced asr Rakocevic was the first to open the game with free throws after a Penetration move. Bajramovic responded with one of his own and, after Will McDonald outplayed Petravicius in the paint, he tied the score with a triple. Both teams chose a fast tempo and it seemed it suited L. Rytas better as Price pushed the home team in front for the first time with free throws, 8-6. The game turned chaotic a bit, but stayed tough and after Mickael and Bajramovic exchanged baskets, Chuck Eidson was hit hard and benched. Jackson Vroman entered and immediately contributed, pushing the margin to 12-9, but Teletovic stepped up with a three. After he hit a free throw, Tau Ceramica led 12-14. L. Rytas woke up then and, with help by Vroman working hard on the offensive glass and Lukauskis, brought restored the lead. After a timeout, Tau used 2 offensive rebounds to have a whole minute for the last attack of the quarter and Planinic tied the score at the last second.

Marijonas Petravicius - Lietuvos RytasSplitter opened the second quarter with a flashy penetration and Mickael increased the margin to 18-24 with 4 free throws. The hosts looked totally confused and needed a timeout as fresh Mouneke dunked and completed an impressive 0-10 run for Tau. Price finally hit after few empty minutes but Mouneke repeated what he did moments ago, dunking. Petravicius finally scored, making free throws and hitting a semi-hook, but a Red-hot Mouneke responded with a jumper and Sergi Vidal made one from the line, 24-31. Price nailed a three, but Splitter answered and forced Petravicius's third foul as the margin sailed to 27-36. The hosts tried the get closer as Bajramovic and Martynas Gecevicius both hit shots, but ex-L. Rytas player Simas Jasaitis hit a three and Pablo Prigioni penetrated off a steal. Tau again finished the quarter as Splitter used a steal by Prigioni to make it 33-44 at the halftime break.

Lukauskis and Rakocevic exchanged triples as the second half got underway. Eidson opened his account with free throws. Bajramovic, Eidson and Petravicius continued a small, but very important run, using a full-court press to cut the gap to 44-47. The game was suddenly open again, as a put-back by Petravicius put L. Rytas as close as 46-47. The hosts had a chance to take the lead, but Petravicius missed and Planinic penetrated. Lukauskis brought the hosts close again, but Teletovic stepped up with a triple and a huge dunk, 48-54. After Planinic ran the court effectively again, the hosts needed a timeout. Four consecutive points by Petravicius kept L. Rytas close, but Rakocevic and Planinic kept the lead for Tau, 54-60. However the hosts had a local hero, Price, who penetrated twice and forced a Tau timeout with two minutes left in the this crazy quarter. Still, Tau had an ace up its sleeve as Teletovic’s next triple ended the period at 56-63.

Pablo Prigioni - Tau CeramicaBoth teams went scoreless for the first minute of the decisive quarter until Splitter finally made a free throw. Price faked the big man on the other attack and hit a triple to ignite the crowd, 62-66. But Andrius Slezas was punished with an unsportsmanlike foul and veteran Prigioni took use with 3 points, 62-69. When Vidal drained a triple and boosted the visitors' lead to 64-72 with six minutes on the clock, it was a now-or-never situation for L. Rytas. After free throws by Petravicius, Lukauskis had a chance on the fastbreak, but missed while Splitter dunked at the other end, 66-74. Splitter hit again, canceling a triple by Price. The big center almost finished the game by forcing a unsportsmanlike foul from Petravicius, hitting a free throw and dishing for Muoneke's triple, that made it 71-80 with three-and-a-half minutes left. Price and Bajramovic tried to save the day with a triple and free throws, 76-81. When Petravicius nailed a baby hook with 44 seconds to go, Tau needed a timeout. Teletovic missed a triple, but L. Rytas couldn't rebound unlike Mickael, whose put-back put Tau in a more comfortable position, 78-83. Bajramovic hit a triple then and Rakocevic suddenly missed both of his free throws. Price took initiative on the last attack but lost the ball and the game.

Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"Congratulations to our opponents for the win. If we had played a little better in the first half, just like the second, we would have won the game. Basically, we only lost one quarter, the second one. They had some easy shots, which we usually do not let our opponents score. In the second quarter only, we committed 6 turnovers. That's how Tau Ceramica built its advantage. Eidson was injured a bit. He hurt himself last night during practice and today, through some moments, he couldn't even play. If he was fit, we would have been better. One big thanks for the crowd, and sorry to them for this loss. They deserved a win or at least an overtime, but this is basketball."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"It is very difficult to win in Vilnius. But tonight we were a better team, except for a few moments down the stretch. Starting the third quarter, we played like pupils, almost with no order on the court. I have to notice that we only turned the ball over once in the first half, and in those two opening minutes of the third quarter, we committed 4 turnovers. It was interesting but hard at the same time to play against my former team. I still call Lietuvos Rytas and Vilnius my home."

Players

VROMAN, JACKSON
Lietuvos Rytas
"Basically, we didn't play as well in the first half as we did after the halftime break. We wanted to play fast because we knew they were coming in after a hard weekend in Spain. So we wanted to push the tempo and burn those guys down. We did at times in the second half. But we weren't aggressive enough in the first one and we couldn't succeed later. I knew most of the opponents pretty well because I spent the first half of the season in Spain. I was really surprised when Rakocevic missed those free throws in the end. But I guess the crowd factor worked. People must have been crazy then because it's the first time saw Igor miss both free throws."
RAKOCEVIC, IGOR
Tau Ceramica
"I know Lietuvos Rytas had problems with injuries, they didn't have two guys. But we were also very tired because we had three very tough games in four days of the Spanish cup tournament just last weekend. But I think we played very good, like a good team should play. It's an important win because we want to be the first in the group. Lietuvos Rytas is a very good team. I'm very happy for coach Trifunovic. He's the leader of their team. Lietuvos Rytas is right now getting a name in Europe and I think the big part of this effort is exactly Trifunovic. If they had those injured players today, it would have been much harder to win here."
