THE TAKE

Two days after a thrilling start to their Quarterfinal Playoff series, Olympiacos and real Madrid will clash again in Game 2 of the best-of-five event on Thursday at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece. Both teams have plenty to be optimistic about from the opener, even though the Reds were the only ones smiling at the end of the night. Olympiacos dominated early and used the crowd’s support to comeback in the second half after things fell apart. The reserves produced 49 points led by Theo Papaloukas, who was at his best tying a playoffs record with 13 assists. Lynn Greer and Nikola Vujcic shined with 19 points apiece and Panagiotis Vasilopoulos stood tall down the stretch with 2 clutch three-pointers. The Whites found that their zone defense can stymie the Olympiacos attack, showed tremendous heart in coming back from an 18-point second period deficit and learned that they can control the momentum at times in Greece, as they did with 20 unanswered points bridging the second and third quarters. Perhaps most importantly, Real Madrid head coach Joan Plaza played 10 players for at least 14 minutes and no one came close to the 30-minute line, giving him fresh legs for Game 2. Meanwhile Olympiacos’s two oldest players, Papaloukas and Vujcic, played 29 and 30 minutes, respectively. Even so Madrid must find players to slow the Reds’ duo down for the minutes that they do play, while not overexposing themselves to the rest of the home team’s stars. Louis Bullock and Felipe Reyes helped out with the scoring, but Sergio Llull was unable to provide a spark off the bench, which combined for just 26 points in nearly 80 minutes, and the team as a whole committed twice as many turnovers (14) as assists (7), something that must be fixed to win a playoff game on the road. Game 2 could be a much different story. The Reds top players from the season who played less on Tuesday, including Josh Childress and Yotam Halperin, will be looked upon to contribute more, while Madrid tries to involve Llull and Pepe Sanchez alongside Raul Lopez to get better production from its backcourt, while Kennedy Winston and Alex Mumbru will be asked to do more at small forward. The metal side of both teams will be tested as well in what could be the most important game of both teams’ seasons.

GAME NOTES

Olympiacos
  • Olympiacos guard Lynn Greer was a teammate of Real Madrid playmaker Pepe Sanchez at Temple University for two seasons, between 1998 and 2000. In the second of those seasons, Greer averaged 12.3 points, while Sanchez led the team with 8 assists and 3.4 steals per game as the Owls were ranked among the top 10 college basketball teams in America.
  • Point guard Theo Papaloukas set a career-high and tied an eight-year old Euroleague Basketball playoffs record with 13 assists in Game 1 of the Quarterfinal Playoffs. He now shares the record with Elmer Bennett, who dished 13 for Tau Ceramica against AEK Athens in 2001.
  • Papaloukas now leads the full-season charts for assists with 5.5 per game. He has dished a minimum of 4 assists in every game this season.
  • Center Nikola Vujcic has returned to the elite level that saw him named to the All-Euroleague first and second teams five times. Over his past five Euroleague games, Vujcic has averaged 20.8 points on 67.2% two-point shooting, 5.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
  • Big man Ioannis Bourousis needs 4 more rebounds to surpass former Maccabi star Anthony Parker for 25th place on the Euroleague Basketball career rebounding charts. He enters Game 2 of the playoffs series against Real Madrid with 521 career rebounds.
  • Swingman Michalis Pelekanos played for Real Madrid last season and saw action in 17 Euroleague games with the club. He was a teammate of six current Madrid players under head coach Joan Plaza.
  • Big man Sofoklis Schortsanitis will miss the Quarterfinal Playoffs series after Olympiacos suspended him for one month due to disciplinary reasons.
  • Olympiacos clinched a spot in the 2008 Quarterfinal Playoffs after beating Real Madrid in the Top 16 finale 72-63 in Piraeus. Panos Vasilopoulos sparked the Reds with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in that win.
Real Madrid
  • Guard Louis Bullock has made at least 1 three-pointer in 10 straight Euroleague games. He is shooting 44.4% from downtown over that span.
  • Bullock has not missed a free throw since Week 2, making 34 consecutive free throws in that stretch.
  • Center Tomas Van den Spiegel sits at 13th place on the Euroleague Basketball career shots blocked list with 75. He is 4 away from reaching Tau Ceramica’s Tiago Splitter for 10th place.
  • Forward Alex Mumbru established his Euroleague career-high in points with 21 against Olympiacos in November 2002. Madrid won that game 73-66.
  • Guard Raul Lopez set his Euroleague career high in assists against Olympiacos in December 2000. Lopez came off the bench and dished 9 assists, but it wasn’t enough as the Reds won 91-84.
  • Ten players in this series took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Madrid’s Felipe Reyes, Raul Lopez and Alex Mumbru won silver medals as members of the Spanish national team. Marko Tomas of Madrid played for Croatia. Olympiacos’s Theo Papaloukas, Ioanis Bourousis, Panos Vasilpopoulos, Georgios Printezis, Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Michalis Pelekanos played for Greece under head coach Panagiotis Giannakis.

Quotes Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"We will be prepared for another difficult and tough game. I will have to point out again that showing patience and concentration will be the key for that game. We should take advantage of all the things we learned during the season concerning the different situations we experienced. There is not much that will change in Thursday's match compared to Game 1. I think that turnovers and rebounds will make the story of the second leg. Furthermore, controlling the tempo and good decision-making is our main concern. We still have the pressure of not allowing Madrid win at our home, but I suppose after our first-game win this stress will prove a creative one and will eventually help us."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"I think that there is no room for surprises for both teams. In two-days time there is not much that you could change. Each team has studied the other and we know each other well. We should try harder in order to stop Olympiacos' pick-and-roll plays, while we have to handle the fact that they make changes after screen plays on the defensive end. Rebounds will be an important factor, too. I such a series and in such a high basketball level, there is not much more that you can to prepare yourself better. We know Olympiacos and we have to prove to be ready to win in Athens."

Players

GREER, LYNN
Olympiacos
"Well, there is not much that you can change in less than 48 hours time. We will watch the video of the first game carefully in order to point out our mistakes and improve our plays. But, in general both teams know each other. I think that defense will decide the winner. Should we play as well on the defensive end as we played in the first game, and we will celebrate another victory. The way we won on Tuesday will help us a lot. I mean, we managed to keep our nerve when Real Mardid came up with a huge comeback. That makes us feel stronger. I think that now pressure will be more on Madrid's side."
BULLOCK, LOUIS
Real Madrid
"Game 2 will be as tough as the first one of this series. First thing we have to do is not to repeat such a lazy start. We should not allow easy points to Olympiacos. Furthermore, we have to minimize our errors. As long as we stay close or lead the score, we put the pressure on their side. They have two advantages compared to our team: experience in players such as Papaloukas and Vujcic and the home court advantage. So, we have to prove better in terms of turnovers and rebounding. That could lead us to the win."
Lynn Greer - OlympiacosOlympiacos moved within a single victory of its first Final Four in a decade by again outlasting never-say-die Real Madrid 79-73 at home in Piraeus, Greece, to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five Quarterfinal Playoff series. Game 3 is next Tuesday in Madrid, to be follow on Thursday, if necessary, by Game 4. As in their opening-game victory, the Reds again nursed small leads before relying on big plays to seize victory from what was a close game down the stretch. at 70-69 with just over 3 minutes remaining, Nikola Vujcic found Georgios Printezis for one inside basket and scored another himself to give Olympiacos the cushion it needed to win. Lynn Greer led the winners with 21 points, including 3 of 6 three-point shooting. Printezis followed with 18 points and 6 rebounds, Vujcic with 14 points and Theodoros Papaloukas with 12. For Real Madrid, Felipe Reyes was the catalyst inside all game, with 23 points and 9 rebounds, while Louis Bullock rifled in 22 points from the perimeter. No other Madrid player scored more than 6. The Olympiacos bench proved the difference, however, as it outscored Madrid 45-18.

Felipe Reyes - Real MadridRaul Lopez scored off-balance to get Madrid's side of the scoreboard going after tipoff, but soon Yotam Halperin dished twice to Printezis for a 4-2 Olympiacos lead. Real Madrid was setting up its defense well, while at the other end Kennedy Winston and Reyes found good options to put the guests ahead 5-6. The Reds used side pick-and-rolls in order to feed the ball inside to Vujcic, who bore offensive responsibility with mixed results. Reyes, on the other hand, was more efficient as he helped Madrid regain the lead at 10-11. Olympiacos starter Jannero Pargo was called for his third personal foul after 6 minutes and replaced by Papaloukas. who joined Printezis in splitting a pair of baskets from the paint. Another substitute, big man Ioannis Bourousis, found 4 points at the free-throw line as Olympiacos stayed ahead 18-15 at the end of one quarter.

Bourousis and Reyes exchanged baskets to open the second quarter before Papaloukas used his height to post up Sergo Llull and make it 22-17. Reyes continued to prove unstoppable, though, as the Madrid captain kept on connecting, lastly on a nice jumper at 22-19. Bourousis answered with a three-pointer for the biggest lead yet, 25-19, but Reyes again answered for Madrid in close. Lopez then brought Madrid within 25-23 before Greer chipped in a triple to curb the visitors' enthusiasm. Bullock exploded then for three-pointer and a driving lay-up to forge a 30-30 tie. Olympiacos score only on 1 of 4 free throws then, allowing Bullock to give Madrid the lead at 31-32. Vujcic and Papaloukas had seen enough, however, and combined for 5 straight points to make it 36-32. Both teams were playing excellent defense not allowing open opportunities, but Madrid got the better of a late exchange of free throws to trim the difference to 38-36.

Georgios Printezis - OlympiacosGreer created room for a three-pointer earlier in the second half, making it 41-37. The real bad news for Madrid was third fouls for both Reyes and Lopez, who were replaced. Printezis continued to shine, hitting another jumper for 43-37. Llull nailed a triple to keep Madrid from falling further gack, but Printezis connected on his third consecutive basket for a 47-40 lead. Olympiacos was now facing foul trouble, too, as Vasilopoulos, Bourousis and Halperin went to the bench with their third each, but Greer sent the difference into double digits with a corner triple at 50-40. The Olympiacos defense was even better, holding Madrid to just 3 points through 6 minutes of the third quarter. Vujcic scored on a nice pass by Papaloukas and then added free throws to make it 54-41. Reyes and Alex Mumbru stepped up for Madrid to with 5 points, but Olympiacos was finding solutions to the visitors' zone defense. Vujcic lobbed back-door for an alley-oop dunk by Josh Childress while Papaloukas bagged a three-pointer to keep the Reds ahead 59-49 after 30 minutes.

Alex Hervelle's tip-in set the tone at the start of the fourth quarter, although Greer beat the shot-clock buzzer to rebuild the 10-point Olympiacos margin. Madrid tightened its defense, while Reyes and Mumbru connected while drawing the third and fourth fouls of Papaloukas, who was substituted at 61-55, still 8 minutes to play. Without him, Olympiacos struggled to attack Madrid's zone, and when Mumbru scored in traffic, the guests were as close as 63-59. The fourth-quarter hero from Game 1, Vasilopoulos, offered Olympiacos a solution again from behind the arc, making it 66-59. Madrid did not panic, though, and kept dictating the fourth-quarter tempo. Bullock nailed a difficult, off-balance jumper and follwed it with a three-pointer in transition to cut it to 68-66. Olympiacos head coach Panagiotis Giannakis put Papaloukas back in and Greer scored for 70-66, but a confident Bullock blasted another triple for a one-point-game at 70-69. With every point worth gold, Vujcic made a brilliant pass to Printezis for another left-handed layup. Next, the veteran center canned a jump-hook in the paint, giving Olympiacos control again at 74-69 with 1 minute, 10 seconds to play. Vasilopoulos stole, although Printezis missed twice from the free-throw line, keeping Madrid alive. Bullock's free throws made it 74-71 with 28 seconds left, Vujcic made 1 of 2 at the line, then Vasilopoulos had a great rebound on a miss by Lopez, leading to free throws by Greer that meant a 77-71 score with 16 seconds remaining, enough for Olympiacos to capture a 2-0 lead before traveling to Madrid next week as the Quarterfinal best-of-five series moves to Spain.

Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"We knew that Real Madrid would play better in this game. We tried to control the game from the beginning, but we played nervous at times. The important thing is that we used our mind when it counted most and that shows that we have a quality team. We are now up 2-0 and we have to be ready to play even better in Game 3. I am happy because we had some good decision making down the stretch. That is something we were working from the beginning of the season. We have players that are really willing to improve their way of thinking and that’s very important."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Tonight, I think we managed to control Olympiacos’s pick-and-roll plays, while on the offensive end we did a better job when they decided to switch after screens. It was a tough game and we managed to stay close till the end, once more. In the first half the tempo was slowed down. When Olympiacos built a difference, we came back and had the opportunities to sail in-front. However, we committed some errors down the stretch and they found solutions. We have to believe that we can win the games in Madrid and come back here for a Game 5. The team that makes fewer mistakes wins the games. End of story."

Players

PRINTEZIS, GEORGIOS
Olympiacos
"Nothing is over, yet. We managed to achieve our goal, to win both games at our home and take a 2-0 advantage before moving to Madrid. We now aim to beat them on Tuesday to win the series and not let them stay alive. We have to travel to Spain as if the series is tied 0-0. Our fans gave us a huge blast of support. We now should qualify to the Final Four to make them happy. Real Madrid proved that they have a great team. This was another hard and tight game. We controlled the tempo for most of the game, but they gave us a hard time when they used the zone defense. However, we improved our defense and found solutions on the offensive end down the stretch."
BULLOCK, LOUIS
Real Madrid
"We had the opportunity to win the game, but committed a few turnovers in the final minutes that cost us. I think that we had the momentum in the final quarter, but Olympiacos found solutions down the stretch using its experience as a team. Once more we stayed close till the final buzzer, but before that we allowed them to build an advantage and we had to come back. I think that the situation will be different at our home and I hope that we will be back here to play for a spot at the Final Four."
