THE TAKE

Barons/LMT Riga hopes to build upon its success of last season but will have a tough Eurocup regular season Group B opener at home against Dynamo Moscow. The Latvian team captured the FIBA EuroCup title last season beating Mons-Hainaut by one point in the final. Barons also claimed the Latvian league crown and reached the semifinals of the Baltic League. Head coach Karlis Muiznieks is back for his second season with the club and was forced to re-tool his troops. The leader thus far for Muiznieks has been returnee forward Demetrius Alexander, who has averaged about 18 points and nearly 8 rebounds outside Eurocup play. Late addition forward Charles Rhodes has been tremendous in his short stint with the team with over 20 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Armandas Skele is also back from last season and has excelled thus far with about 16 points, 6 rebounds, more than 3 assists and over 2 steals a game. Guard Giedrius Gustas has done a good job running the show and scoring while center Kaspars Berzins has the ability to score in double digits while being a strong rebounder as well. If the trio of Alexander, Rhodes and Skekle can continue their impressive seasons, then Barons has a chance of grabbing a home victory against mighty Dynamo. The Russian club won the 2006 ULEB Cup before reaching the Euroleague quarterfinals in 2007 and the semifinals of last season's ULEB Cup. Head coach David Blatt arrived at the club from Efes Pilsen last season. And Dynamo made some big name additions including guard Jannero Pargo and forward Bostjan Nachbar from the NBA. Pargo has been a worthy acquisition with nearly 12 points, nearly 4 rebounds and more than 5 assists while shooting about 40% from long range. Nachbar has led the team in scoring with over 16 points to go along with nearly 6 rebounds a game. But Blatt has plenty more weapons to throw at Barons. Guard Travis Hansen is back from last year's team and averaging nearly 15 points and more than 4 rebounds - not to mention the experience of reaching the Euroleague semifinals in 2006 with Tau. Center Robertas Javtokas - the 2005 ULEB Cup Final Four MVP for winner Lietuvos Rytas and 2007 Euroleague champion with Panathinaikos - also returns and has been solid in the paint. Center Darjus Lavrinovic has worked his way more into the rotation and also has the experience of reaching the 2007 ULEB Cup semifinals with Unics Kazan. And another addition has been Hollis Price who serves as a very good back-up point guard. Two other three-point threats are forward Sergey Monya and guard Sergey Bykov. All told, Blatt has a team loaded well enough that it should challenge for the Eurocup title.

Bostjan Nachbar - Dynamo MoscowDynamo Moscow confirmed its status as one of this season's Eurocup favorites by pounding Barons/LMT Riga 61-80 to tie fellow Russian team Unics Kazan atop of group B. Dynamo's array of offensive weapons was just too much for the Barons, who allowed the guests to shot 62% from inside the ark and got outrebounded 31-43. Bostjan Nachbar led Dynamo with 24 points, Jannero Pargo notched 14 and Sergey Monya added 11 points to go with 8 rebounds. Barons managed to stay even with Dynamo at 16-16, but the guests put up a 28-14 surge to finish the first half. Dynamo expanded the lead to 21 by the end of the third and nobody doubted the outcome during the low-scoring fourth quarter. Giedrius Gustas scored 14 points for Barons, Demetrius Alexander added 11 and Charles Rhodes chipped in with 10.

Gustas didn't get much help from his teammates at the start of the game, as he was the only Barons player to score in the first three minutes, while Monya, Pargo, Travis Hansen and Nachbar gave Dynamo a 4-12 lead. Gustas nailed a triple, before Armands Skele and Alexander finally stepped up for the hosts. Gustas added 5 points more to even the score at 16-16, but Nachbar's three-pointer sparked a 2-8 Dynamo run to make it 18-25 after the first quarter. The guests found a way to stop Gustas to start the second period with a 0-9 run, as Monya scored 5 points with a triple and a dunk. With the scoreboard showing 18-34, Barons head coach Karlis Muiznieks had to call a timeout. Dainius Adomaitis and Kaspars Berzins hit two straight from downtown to help the hosts get closer, but Dynamo scored the next 9 points thanks to a balanced inside-outside offence. Charles Rhodes, Gustas and Alexander managed to cut the 19-point Dynamo lead down to 30-44 at the halftime.

Berzins nailed two triples to start the second half, while Dynamo matched his 6 points with baskets by Monya, Hansen and Pargo, whose drives troubled the hosts for most of the third quarter. Barons had no plans of giving up, and their aggressive attitude was rewarded with multiple free throw opportunities. Rhodes scored his third and fourth free throw of the period to make it 47-63, but Nachbar was just too much to handle for the hosts, and after Monya dunked off a Hansen miss, Dynamo broke the 20-point margin at 49-70 with 10 minutes to go. With the game's outcome decided, last quarter tuned out to be a low-scoring one, though Nachbar never stopped torturing the hosts. Meanwhile, Alexander kept pushing for Barons with 5 points in the quarter before seating down on the bench after he reached double figures. Sergey Bykov scored 5 in a row for Dynamo to put the guests back at 20+, before Corey Smith hit a last three-pointer for the hosts to lessen the defeat, as Dynamo players could celebrate a successful Eurocup opener.

Head Coaches

MUIZNIEKS,KARLIS
Barons/LMT Riga
"We had several plans for the game which were not put into practice. Giedrius Gustas and Dainius Adomaitis played on an appropriate level. Unfortunately, Armands Skele is not recovered from the sickness he had and in this game also got an ankle injury. Our opponents surprised us with their tactics: we expected many more three-pointers but they decided to play under the basket."
BLATT, DAVID
Dynamo Moscow
"We did everything we wanted from our game plan. There was good defense. This was the right way to win the game. It is a great opportunity to start the competition winning by 20 points in a road game. But we still must return home and work hard on several issues in our performance."
NACHBAR, BOSTJAN
Dynamo Moscow
"The first game of the Eurocup was hard. We had no idea what to except. Different league, balls, arena and referees. There was insufficient information about our opponents, but we were prepared enough, so that we could win against Barons/LMT."
