THE TAKE

Alba welcomes DKV Joventut to the state-of-the-art O2 Arena in Group C on Thursday for a crucial battle that could have Top 16 implications. These teams faced each other in the ULEB Cup for the first time last season with Joventut beating Alba twice on its way to winning the title. It will be a special game for DKV forward Jan Jagla, born and raised in Berlin, who returns to his hometown to face Alba. With Week 2 MVP Pops Mensah-Bonsu sidelined, Jagla will spend more time on court, leading a versatile, mobile frontcourt that also features center Edu Hernandez-Sonseca, up-and-coming big man Henk Norel and versatile forward Luka Bogdanovic. Experienced center Patrick Femerling returned to practice, but he is not expected to play much against Joventut, so Adam Chubb will be its main reference in the paint. His matchup with Hernandez-Sonseca will be one of the keys to this game. Bogdanovic and Jagla will battle against Dragisa Drobnjak and Aleksandar Nadjfeji, while Joventut will have to worry about Ansu Sesay, a great shooter and a good athlete at power forward. Joventut is still without Ricky Rubio, who is not expected to play this month. As such, Demond Mallet will be its fulltime floor general, with combo guard Pau Ribas backing him up. Meanwhile, Alba is really deep at point guard, with Rashad Wright and Steffen Hamann trying to put pressure on Mallet. Alba also features a good battery of shooters in Julius Jenkins and Casey Jacobsen, with a perfect complement in do-it-all forward Immanuel McElroy, the key player for the hosts due to his intensity, versatility and power. Ferran Laviña seems the right man to stop McElroy, but players like Simas Jasaitis and even youngster Pere Tomas will have to help him at all times. Jasaitis is set for a big matchup against Jacobsen, two former Tau Ceramica players that reached the Final Four with that team in different seasons. Meanwhile, Jenkins will test his scoring skills against Bracey Wright in another key matchup. Joventut needs to dominate the game tempo, play aggressive and lock the defensive rebound against McElroy, Nadjfeji and Chubb. Meanwhile, Alba needs to slow down the game tempo and get Jenkins and Jacobsen involved, especially in double-team situations. Expect a strong basketball atmosphere and an exciting game in the O2 Arena on Thursday.

GAME NOTES

DKV Joventut
  • Big man Jan Jagla returns home this week as he is a native of Berlin. Jagla was a teammate with current Alba Berlin players Steffen Hamann, Patrick Femerling and Philip Zwiener on the German national team at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
  • Point guard Demond Mallet spent six seasons playing in Germany before joining Joventut. Among the former teammates he will be reunited with this week are Immanuel McElroy and Aleksandar Nadjfeji, who he played with at Koln in the 2006-07 season, and Steffen Hamann, who he played with at Brose Baskets before that.
  • Mallet dominated Berlin in two wins last season in the ULEB Cup, averaging 22 points and 3.5 steals in 30 minutes per game.

Quotes Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
”During the last few weeks it was very strange to play so many tough road games one after another. That was very difficult for the whole team and therefore it feels good to be back home for this game. Although in our group, every team is good enough to beat any other team, this game against Joventut is a key game for us. It is clear that the two Spanish teams as well as Fenerbahce and Lottomatica are better than us and Olimpija Ljubljana, who both have to fight really hard to reach the next round. For this we must play especially well at home for all the winnings. Badalona is a high level Spanish team that must be controlled with the tempo. It is a team that plays with a high speed and they are ready to make a turnaround of 20 points in a very short period. Everybody on the team is a shooter, they play very fast with a lot of energy and a lot of unpredictableness. If we want to win this game, we have to control the tempo in the best possible way.”
ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"Right now I am worried about our team, who has suffered two strong mental blows and we are looking for psychological recovery. We have to be capable of facing the next two games on the road because we won't have the support of our fans. We are working to be able to overcome that. Alba Berlin is forced to win, but we also are because we want to be in the Top 16 and having lost to Fenerbahce Ulker we have no other option than a win. Alba plays at home, the place where the Final Four will be played with some 15,000 fans that will push them to win the game, but of course, we will try that it does not happen."

”This game against Joventut is a very important one for us. They are coming in after a couple of losses, we are coming in after a tough loss. So this is going to be a real competitive game for both teams. For us this game is a chance to redeem ourselves after the big loss in Vitoria. We have practiced very hard knowing that a win on Thursday really can help us out. Against Joventut we will have to control the tempo. Whether we play fast or slow it down and run our offense must be in our hands. We have to act as a team and not get in to their game of up and down.”
RIBAS, PAU
DKV Joventut
"Wew have to be worried for not having won the last two games. We were doing well, but games are won in the final buzzer. If we play well some minutes but then we disappear in the last period we can lose any game, which is what just happened. We have some players out, but if you are exhausted in the final minutes, you have to be mentally stronger to keep the game on your side. If we manage to take a win in Berlin we can, somehow, erase the home loss to Fenerbahce Ulker. I think we have some options, it is a court where we can try to be ourselves again. We need a road win right now."
Ansu Sesay - Alba BerlinAlba Berlin shook off the loss of its top scorer early in the game to prevail by 74-72 over visiting DKV Joventut at O2 World in the German capital on Thursday. The victory lifted Alba's record to 2-2 in Group C, good for sole possesion of fourth place, with three teams tied at 3-1. Joventut fell to 1-3 despite having a chance to win or tie with the ball and 7 seconds left. Pau Ribas shot falling down and missed, however his team's single basket in the first 7 minutes, 30 seconds of the fourth quarter was more to blame. Berlin saw top scorer Julius Jenkins go down in a collision with Desmond Mallet midway through the second quarter, never to return. The hosts got an ensemble effort, however, with Ansu Sesay scoring 15 points and Adam Chubb posting a double-double of 12 and 10 rebounds. Aleskandar Nadjfeji scored 12, too, while Steffan Hamman and Jenkins added 10 each. Luka Bogdanovic led the visitors with 21 points by hitting 7 of 12 three-pointers, the last of which made cut the difference to 71-70 in the final minute. A series of free throws moved the scoreboard to 74-72 before Rashad Wright missed his pair with 7 seconds left, but Joventut couldn't get a clean shot off and Alba took the victory. Simas Jasaitis added 13 points for Joventut, while Jan Jagla put up 11.

Mallet opened the scoring for the guests with a mid-range jumper. Chubb answered right back for Berlin. Two turnovers and a three-point miss by Mallett paved the way for Sesay to knock down his second jumper, this one a three-pointer from the right wing, to put Alba up 8-2. Bogdanovic answered with a triple of his own to bring Joventut within 8-7 but Hamann converted a three-point play for an 11-7 advantage to the hosts. The teams swapped baskets before Aleksandar Nadjfefi’s layup extended Alba's advantage to 17-11. Mallet replied with a triple and Jan Jagla hit from downtown, too, trimming the margin to 19-17. Next, Jagla stepped in front of a Berlin pass for a steal and break-away dunk to knot the game at 19-19 after 10 minutes.

Luka Bogdanovic - DKV JoventutMallet and Jagla both missed three-pointers and then Joventut turned the ball over as two free throws each by Sesay and Chubb and a triple by Julius Jenkins pushed Alba’s lead to 26-20. Joventut finally scored its first basket of the quarter on Bogdanovic’s triple three minutes into the period to cut the deficit to 26-23. And Berlin coach Luka Pavicevic was forced to call a timeout after Simas Jasaitis knocked down a jumper to make it 26-25. Jenkins hit a long ball and then two foul shots to push Berlin back ahead 31-27. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca’s first basket of the game made it 31-29. But Sesay hit a triple and Nadjfeji scored in the paint to increase the advantage to 36-31. Joventut again used the long ball as Bogdanovic nailed back-to-back three-pointers to give Joventut the lead 36-37 – its first since the first basket of the game, forcing another Berlin timeout. Sesay willed home a reverse layup as Alba pushed back ahead 38-37. And that was the lead at the break.

Immanuel McElroy boosted Alba's edge with a quick layup after the break, which meant something more as neither team got a clean shot for awhile until Nadjfeji downed a baseline jumper. Next, Bracey Wright broke to the basket for Joventut, while McElroy did the same for Alba to make it 45-39. Bogdanovic finally got a good look from deep for Joventut and didn't waste it, but Sesay connected with Nadjfeji to keep Alba up. Points were loosening up as Bracey Wright scored and Ferran Laviña hit free throws for a 46-46 tie, but Rashad Wright answered for Alba on the break and then fed McElroy again to make it 50-46. Jagla lifted Joventut now with a key triple, and after Rashad Wright drove for another layup for Alba, Pau Ribas made free throws to get Joventut within 52-51. After Chubb hit free throws, Jasaitis took the honor of tying 54-54 from downtown. Ribas put Joventut ahead at the line. The, after Sesay skied to stop his fastbreak layup, Ribas put the finishing touch on the quarter by striking from three-point distance at the top to leave Joventut ahead on the scoreboard, 56-61 after 30 minutes.

Both teams struggled offensively early in the fourth against the other side’s defense. But Chubb hit a jumper and tipped in a McElroy miss. Hamann then scored on a driving layup after a Chubb steal and the hosts pulled to within 62-63 with 7 minutes left. Joventut turned the ball over three times in the first first minutes of the fourth, causing a Joventut time out. Jagla made just 1 of 2 foul shots and then Chubb knotted the game at 64-64 with an inside layup, sending the 10,164 fans at the O2 World arena into a frenzy. Henk Norel missed 2 foul shots and Nadjfeji was able to knock down 1 of 2 for a 65-64 Alba lead with 4 minutes left. Berlin then three times retained the ball on a crucial possession, which Hamann finished off with a huge three-pointer from the wing for a 68-64 lead with 2:55 remaining. Bogdanovic came up with just as big a basket for Joventut, a three-pointer to make it 68-67 – just Joventut’s second basket of the fourth quarter. But Sesay answered right back with a triple of his own to re-establish the four-point lead 71-67. Bogdanovic twice missed three-pointers but hit his third attempt from long range to make it a one-point game again, 71-70, with just under a minute left. With 39 seconds, Ferran Laviña was whistled for an unsportsmanlike foul and Nadjfefi made 1 of 2 free throws. On the ensuing possession, however, Hamann knocked down both his foul shots with 20 seconds left to make it a two-possession game at 74-70. Mallet made his pair from the line with 12.3 seconds to make it 74-72, but Rashad Wright missed both of his 11.2 seconds left. Ribas looked to pass, but had to take the game in his hands and his fall-away baseline shot at the buzzer rolled over the rim.

Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"Before the game we have stated that this game has a qualification of character for us. If we had lost the game, it would be very difficult to overcome, since after Badalona lost at home to Fenerbahce it looks like, that there is going to be a straight fight between Joventut, us and Olimpija Ljubljana for the 4th place in our group. By beating Joventut we have saved our chances to go to the second round. The pressure because of this situation was big, but the players accepted it against a good team and in the end came up with an important win. We played well especially in the first half. We have come up with a good control of the tempo, with good defenses and with good initiative in offense. However we could not execute certain situations and it was visible how dangerous Joventut is. When our turnovers created good opportunities, you could see, that Joventut is a team, that can bury an opponent within two minutes. But even, when things were not working for us, we persisted and were awarded with a good possibilty to finish strong and we did. I have to congratulate my players on carrying this win all the way through."
ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"Congratulations to Alba Belrin. They have been playing well in the first part of the game. They were playing very well the pick & roll situations in the first ten, twelve minutes and they played with smaller centers, which were difficult for us to stop with Henk Norel and Eduardo Hernandez-Sonseca. So we decided to defend with smaller players. This went better, but in the last minutes we had problems with the offensive rebound. Also Alba at the end of the game found better options to shoot than us. Despite the loss I am very happy with Luka Bogdanovic, because for him it was very difficult to start the season in Badalona. Today finally he was able to play at his best level. We are still waiting for two important players, Ricky Rubio and Pops Mensah Bonsu, and maybe, when they return to playing with us, we still will have our chances to reach the next round. We shot 37 three- pointers, which today was too much. But we have so many good shooters and without Pops Mensah Bonsu we have not so many chances inside. Henk Norel is still young and for Edu it is difficult to play against smaller centers. We need to find a better balance to play inside and outside."

Players

CHUBB, ADAM
Alba Berlin
"We knew how important the game was for our future in the Euroleague and we had that back in our minds. We made a couple of mistakes in the second half, but we made our forte in the fourth quarter, when it was time. There we just pushed through and made the big plays and the big shots. Of course, there are still things, we thought we could have done better as a team, but in the end we have won the game and it doesn't matter, if we did by two or by twenty points. As a team we are feeling more and more comfortable in this new arena, where the fans are behind us."
JAGLA, JAN-HENDRICK
DKV Joventut
"The o2 world is a great arena and it is fun to play here, but unfortunately we did not play our best basketball tonight. We did not play hard enough in defense and struggled with our shots. Don't misunderstand me, I don't want to take anything away from Alba, which played very good tonight. But I am very sad about our own performance and think, that we have missed a big chance to win here tonight. It is always hard to play your best on the road and you could see that especially in the end, when we did not make our shots, but Alba made them."
