THE TAKE

Two teams looking to bounce back from recent losses while trying to climb the Group D ladder meet in the Serbian capital on Wednesday when Partizan Belgrade hosts Efes Pilsen at Pionir Arena. Partizan lost at home for the first time this season last week in a nail-biter against reigning champion CSKA. Meanwhile Efes dropped its third straight game and second at home to Real Madrid. The two teams enter this duel with identical 2-3 records and tied for third place, knowing that a win could carry one team up to second place and could also play an important role in any potential tiebreaker between these two clubs. Efes won the first meeting between these two clubs this season by the slimmest of margins, 61-60. Milos Vujanic drilled a clutch triple down the stretch to give Efes the lead for good and head coach Ergin Ataman’s charges held on. Now it will be interesting to see if Vujanic can duplicate his heroics at his former home. The guard led the Euroleague in scoring with Partizan in the 2002-03 season. Now Partizan has a whole new generation of stars looking to leave their mark on the season. The backcourt duo of Milenko Tepic and Aleksandar Rasic, with Uros Tripkovic coming off the bench, has been fearless this season in scoring as well as creating for others. Now they will challenge Efes’s deep guard rotation featuring Vujanic, Bootsy Thornton, Ender Arslan and Charles Smith as well as newcomer Cliff Hammonds, who is available to make his Euroleague debut. Efes is equally deep up front, where Kaya Peker and Kerem Gonlum partner in the starting lineup and Michailis Kakiouzis adds versatility off the bench. Veteran big man Predrag Drobnjak joined the club this week too. Partizan counters with ace rebounders Stephane Lasme and Novica Velickovic, while 2.29-meter center Slavko Vranes creates matchup headaches for opponents too. Zarko Rakocevic and teenager Jan Vesely have also brought plenty of spirit off the bench with small forward Cedomir Vitkovac injured lately. The key for the visitors could be trying to keep up with Partizan’s rebounders, as the Serbian champs lead the league with 37.2 rebounds per game, while Efes is second-bottom with 26.2 per game. Partizan also leads the competition with 16.8 offensive rebounds per game and Efes can ill-afford to give Partizn too many second-chance points. If former Partizan player Drobnjak can help his new teammates on the glass, Efes will have a chance to stop its losing streak, but Partizan comes into the game as a slight favorite.

GAME QUOTES

Partizan
  • Guard Aleksandar Rasic finished the 2006-07 season at Efes Pilsen, playing five games in the Turkish League. Only Kerem Gonlum and Cenk Akyol remain active from his time there.
  • Guard Milenko Tepic has made at least one three-pointer in 10 consecutive Euroleague games. The streak dates back to the Top 16 last season. He has made 20 triples in 46 attempts (43.5%) during the streak.
  • Teenage big man Jan Vesely made his first career Euroleague start last week against CSKA and responded with 9 rebounds in 25 minutes.
  • Center Slavko Vranes needs one more blocked shot to reach 50 for his Euroleague career. He is one of only 10 players in Euroleague Basketball history to appear in at least 40 games and average more than one block per game.
  • The magic number for Partizan has been 80 points. The Serbian champs have won eight of the last nine games in which they have scored at least 80.
Efes Pilsen
  • Guard Milos Vujanic spent the first two seasons of his Euroleague career with Partizan Belgrade. Vujanic played there from 2001 to 2003, leading the Euroleague in scoring with 25.8 points per game in that second season, after which he was selected to the All-Euroleague Second Team. He also helped Partizan win a pair of Yugoslavian League championships and one Yugoslavian Cup.
  • Vujanic needs just 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Big man Predrag Drobnjak is set to make his return to the Euroleague on Wednesday against his boyhood club. Drobnjak started his career at Partizan and played there between 1992 and 1998 and again in the 2006-07 season. During his time there, Drobnjak helped Partizan win three Yugoslavian League championships, one Serbian League crown and one Adriatic League title.
  • Guard Bootsy Thornton is closing in on 1,000 points for his Euroleague career. Thornton enters his team’s Week 6 game with 969 points in 90 career games. He would need to surpass his career high of 26 points to reach the milestone this week. Mate Skelin currently holds the 20th spot.
  • Forward Michailis Kakiouzis is 3 points away from reaching 1,500 for his Euroleague Basketball career. He also needs only 10 more defensive rebounds to reach 500 for his career – a feat only seven players to date have accomplished.
  • Big man Kaya Peker needs just 2 more rebounds to move into the top 20 on the Euroleague Basketball all-time rebounding charts. Peker enters his team’s Week 6 game with 538 career rebounds.
  • Big man Kerem Gonlum needs just 2 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Guard Cliff Hammonds was signed and registered this week. He is available to make his Euroleague debut against Partizan.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"It is going to be a real battle for the Top 16. Efes failed on its own court against Panionios and now it is looking for the road place where they could compensate for it. I believe it is not Belgrade. Efes is a serious team with a lot of quality. Especially on offense. I think they have not shown their individual quality so far and the team from Istanbul is much better than their results so far."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"This is going to be the first game of the second phase and maybe the most critical game of the group for us. For that reason, this game has a special meaning. If we can win, we will take a fresh breath for the next games. On the other hand, it will make our situation more difficult in the group if we lose. We won the first game in Istanbul, but they made it very hard for us. So it's a very, very hard game that is awaiting us in Belgrade. They also played great against CSKA Moscow in their last game at home and proved once again that they are really tough to beat. They lost two key players form last season in Nikola Pekovic and Milt Palacio, but are still so strong. For that reason, we have to perform our best until that moment to have a chance to win."

"The game on Wednesday is extremely important to both teams. Because of that, I do not expect nice basketball. It could be a heavy and tight struggle for each basket. Efes is real good team, but they were lucky to beat us in Istanbul in our first game. I think the luck shall be on our side now."
SHUMPERT, PRESTON
Efes Pilsen
"We are passing through a hard period of being a new team in Euroleague. Actually we have plenty of talented players in our roster, but the thing is that most of the players are new and it takes time to become a good team. At the same time, we knew that the season is not that long to wait for the perfect harmony. What our coach, me and the teammates are fighting for is to cut this period as short as we can. So the Partizan game is kind of a good chance for us to show that we moved far enough. I believe in me and my teammates that we can prove something special against Partizan."
Aleksandar Rasic - PartizanPartizan took a major step to reach the Top 16 in Group D by downing Efes Pilsen 83-77 in front of a sellout crowd at Pionir Arena in Belgrade, Serbia on Wednesday night. Partizan joins a three-way tie with Real Madrid and Panionios On Telecoms for the second place in Group D, all with a 3-3 record. Efes is fifth, right behind at 2-4. Aleksandar Rasic paced the winners with 18 points. Stephane Lasme and Milenko Tepic each added 11 while Novica Velikovic had 10 for Partizan. Kerem Gonlum led Efes with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Preston Shumpert added 13 points while Charles Smith had 12 for the guests. Uros Tripkovic shined late in the first quarter to give Partizan a 21-14 edge after 10 minutes. Shumpert tried to change things for Efes but Slavko Vranes and Lasme kept the hosts ahead, 40-36, at halftime. An 11-0 run that Tepic capped with a layup broke the game open, 51-38, as Partizan managed to keep a safe lead all the way until the final buzzer. Efes, however, managed to get within 79-75 with 14 seconds to go but it was too little, too late for the guests.

Smith got Efes going with a layup off a steal but Tepic sank a triple for a 3-2 Partizan edge. Jan Vesely, in his second-ever Euroleague start, took over with a fast break dunk that Zarko Rakocevic followed with a power layup to keep the hosts ahead, 7-3. Efes tried to get Kaya Peker involved without much success. Partizan dominating the offensive board, as Petar Bozic finished a three-chance offense with a corner triple. Smith immediately answered from downtown to keep Efes within 10-6. Lasme took over with a reverse layup but a corner three-pointer by Thornton got Efes even closer, 12-9. Tepic had a huge block on Milos Vujanic, as the game turned into a physical battle. Rasic and Peker traded free throws while a floating layup by Vujanic made it a two-point game, 14-12. Velickovic buried a six-meter jumper that Vujanic erased with foul shots. Uros Tripkovic followed a big triple with a backdoor layup for a 21-14 Partizan margin after 10 minutes.

Charles Smith - Efes PilsenShumpert came off the bench and scored in the low post right at the start of the second quarter, as Efes tried more versatility with him and Michalis Kakiouzis together on court. Tripkovic shined with a driving layup while Partizan had improved its man-to-man defense, not allowing any open shots. Efes went scoreless for 3 minutes until Kerem Gonlum stepped up with a power basket. Vranes took over with a basket-plus-foul off an Efes timeout but a jump hook by Gonlum kept the guests within 26-20. Vranes scored again but free throws by Shumpert and a layup by Kakiouzis kept Efes as close as 28-24. Velickovic provided a highlight with an off-balance three-point play but Vujanic struck from downtown. Rasic scored in penetration but Kakiouzis bettered that with a triple, good for a 33-30 Efes deficit. Rasic answered with a seven-meter bomb while Vranes dunked it to keep Partizan ahead, 38-32. A corner jumper by Lasme and a buzzer-beating triple by Smith fixed the halftime score at 40-36.

Peker scored down low after the break but Vesely took over with an alleyoop layup - and the free throw that came with it. Lasme followed a power layup witha mid-range jumper to make it a nine-point game, 47-38. Efes kept missing shots now while Tepic capped a 11-0 Partizan run with a second-chance layup, good for a 51-38 lead. Shumpert buried a shot and soon added a layup to give Efes some hope, 52-42. A red hot Shumpert nailed a big three-pointer to make Efes call timeout at 52-45. Efes was a different team now in defense, dominating the boards. Gonlum shined with a tip-in but Velickovic answered from downtown to give Efes some fresh air at 56-47. Shumpert sank a huge turnaround jumper but a big basket by Tripkovic and a free throw by Tepic restored a double-digit Partizan margin, 59-49. Cedomir Vitkovac and Gonlum traded tip-ins for a 61-51 score at the end of the third quarter.

Milenko Tepic - PartizanVitkovac kept pacing Partizan with a jumper early in the fourth period. Efes needed a rally right away and Predrag Drobnjak stepped on court to score against Lasme. Efes kept missing outside shots, however, as Partizan did not allow any open looks. Meanwhile, Rasic struck from downtown for a 66-53 margin with under 8 minutes remaining. Tepic sank a three-pointer, making Efes call timeout at 69-55. Gonlum and Smith combined for 4 quick points but Rasic scored in penetration to keep the hosts way ahead, 71-59. Thornton made free throws and Cliff Hammonds added a fast break layup to make Partizan call timeout at 74-63. The hosts started to use long possessions while a three-pointer by Hammonds, free throws by Gonlum and a put-back layup by Kakiouzis gave Efes some hope, 75-70, with 1:30 to go. Lasme and Velikovic made free throws to seal the outcome, 79-70. Partizan, backed by an outstanding crowd, managed to break its two-game losing streak and get closer to return to the Top 16.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"I am extremely satisfied because we won a difficult game and also because we managed to do it by a larger margin that Efes beat us in Istanbul. We played very good defense and managed to stop their two best players, Charles Smith and Bootsy Thornton. We did the same with their other players, too. We lost a lot of energy in defense and that did not allow to play better in offense. I want to thank all my players because they showed character in a critical game like this tonight."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"Partizan won a very important game tonight. My team was very stressed before the game. We never found our rhythm in offense. We were into the game throughout the first half but then let Partizan to break the game in the third quarter. We did not stay focused in defense after the break. Our game strategy failed in the third quarter. We tried fullcourt pressure but Partizan dominated until the final buzzer."

Players

VELICKOVIC, NOVICA
Partizan
"This is a very important win for us. We had a lot of pressure on our backs to win this game. We had to beat Efes and entered the game with a lot of energy. We managed to control the entire game. Efes is in trouble now but there are still four games to play and anything can happen in this group."
VUJANIC, MILOS
Efes Pilsen
"We controlled the game in the first half, when our scorers were very active. The second half was totally catastrophic for us. Partizan played aggressive, close to committ a foul in each defense, and they deserved to win tonight. Our goal is to win he next two games against AJ Milano and Panionios, but we have to improve our game a lot."
