THE TAKE

A chance to rejoin the group leaders and mere survival are the objectives, respectively, when Tau Ceramica hosts Union Olimpija in Group C on Wednesday. Tau (4-2) has suffered a rare two-game losing streak and will no doubt remember that when visiting Ljubljana earlier in the season, escaped by a single point. Olimpija (5-1) is reeling from the resignation of head coach Aleksandar Dzikic the day after the team's worst Euroleague home loss ever, by 21 points last week to DKV Joventut. That development leaves assistant coach Gaspar Ptoocnik on the bench at one of the historically toughest places to play in Europe. Olimpija also will be without veteran guard Vlado Ilievski, whose hamstring pull has kept him from traveling, adding his absence to that of injured team leader Marko Milic. When Olimpija needs all hands on deck, that of young talent Mirza Sarajlija is also hurting, although he's expected to play Wednesday. Tau seems healthy despite choosing to let go of guard Robert Hite after his one-month contract. The hosts are relying lately on big men Tiago Splitter and Mirza Teletovic to balance the incredible offensive production of Euroleague top scorer Igor Rakocevic, who has been unstoppable for most of the season. Trying to stop the big men will be Olimpija's frontcourt duo of Mirza Begic and Miha Zupan, while Saso Osbolt and others try to keep the reins on Rakocevic. Olimpija must play with pressure, too, knowing that another loss might count it out of any Top 16 hopes, although on the flip side, a victory would put it close enough to fourth place to keep dreaming of not-too-distant miracles. However its players motivate themselves, Olimpija has a tall order trying to stop Tau away when the hosts are trying to stop their own two-game losing streak.

GAME QUOTES

Tau Ceramica
  • Tau leads the Euroleage in scoring this season and boasts three of the top 10 scorers in the league. Head coach Dusko Ivanovic’s club is averaging 91.3 points per game. Guard Igor Rakocevic leads the league with 20.7 points per game, center Tiago Splitter is third at 17 points and forward Mirza Teletovic is ninth with 14.8 per game. Splitter leads the league in points scored per minute played with 0.76 points per minute. Rakocevic is second at 0.72.
  • Rakocevic is just 8 points away from reaching 1,500 for his Euroleague Basketball career. He also needs just 2 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Rakocevic has made at least 1 three-pointer in 1 consecutive Euroleague games. He has not missed a free throw this season in 29 attempts – the best run in the league.
  • Teletovic has made at least 1 three-pointer in 10 consecutive Euroleague games.
  • Guard Pablo Prigioni has made a three-pointer and picked up a steal in each of his last eight Euroleague appearances.
Union Olimpija
  • Union Olimpija defeated Tau Ceramica in the 1994 Saporta Cup final, but has lost seven straight games against the club since then.
  • Interim head coach Gasper Potocnik will guide a team in the Euroleague for the first time this week against Tau. Potocnik, 28, joined Olimpija as an assistant last season. He has previous head coaching experience in the Slovenian League with Loka Kava Skofja Loka, where he spent three seasons.
  • Guard Saso Ozbolt will look to bounce back from his first scoreless game in nearly five years. Ozbolt failed to score a point in a Euroleague last week for the first time since the last game of the 2003-04 regular season against Cibona in February 2004.
  • Rookie guard Mirza Sarajlija scored a career-high 14 points in the Adriatic League over the weekend. Sarajlija has now reached double figures in points three of his last four games in the Euroleague and Adriatic League combined.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"We will face a team that we beat already in Ljubljana, but were lucky to get that win. We controlled the game for almost 30 minutes, but we lost the grip at the finish and we needed a lucky basket to end up winning that game. So we all know that this rematch won’t be an easy game at all. This game is very important for us because it can grant us a ticket to the Euroleague Top16. We know they count on several good players, so nobody should expect an easy task. Especially after they changed coaches, because the players will probably come in with bigger ambition and aggressiveness. They are dangerous, there is no doubt about it, especially if you look at their great shooters. We have improved our defense lately, but I think we still need to improve a little bit more. We must correct some details to be at the point where I would like to be."
POTOCNIK, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"We are aware of the quality of Tau Ceramica's team, which in the first game defeated us by a point. Our tasks will be to stop their fastbreaks, be careful of their best player, Igor Rakocevic, and try to stop their three-point shooting. We don't travel with a white flag, but we know that to win against Tau on its own court is something like science fiction. What we can promise is that we will fight bravely and that every player will give his maximum."

Players

HUKIC, JASMIN
Union Olimpija
"My injury is still not fully healed, but in these difficult moments for the club, I will try to support the team as I can. Clearly, we cannot tell everyone that we are going to Vitoria to beat Tau, because that would be a miracle, but I can affirm that we are going to Spain to play a good game and fight as well as possible. We will battle, that's for sure, and if that gives us a chance to surprise this great team, we'll grab it with both hands."
Pete Mickeal and Stanko Barac - Tau CeramicaTau Ceramica pounded Union Olimpija 101-69 on Wednesday at the Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, Spain, to remain alive in the fight for the top spot in Group C. Tau improved to 5-2 with the win, beating Olimpija for the eight straight time. Meanwhile the Slovenian champs fell to 1-6 this season as their Top 16 hopes all but disappeared. The visitors started strong as the presence of interim head coach Gasper Potocnik seemed to spark the club. However from the midway point of the second period, Tau outscored Olimpija 72-39 to wrap up a convincing win. Will McDonald led five Tau scorers in double figures with 21 points, Mirza Teletovic added 13, Pete Mickeal and Fernando San Emeterio scored 12 each and Stanko Barac netted 11 and 8 rebounds. Miha Zupan led Olimpija with 15 points, Vladimir Golubovic recorded 12 points and 9 rebounds and Frank Robinson added 12 for Olimpija, which committed 23 turnovers.

Despite of the absences of starters Vlado Ilievski and Marko Milic, Olimpija started in a strong fashion, showing a balanced offense in which all the players contributed. That turned into a 0-4 early lead, which grew as the game went on. Tau survived thanks to a pair of basket-plus-foul plays by McDonald and San Emeterio, but it wasn’t enough to stop the visitors. Olimpija dominated 13-22 after six minutes, forcing head coach Dusko Ivanovic to ask for an urgent timeout to try to stop the drought. Although Teletovic seemed to break the trend with a three-pointer, the visitors kept rocking with Frank Robinson and Mirza Begic, good enough for an 18-27 edge with two minutes to go. Suddenly, the lights turned off for the Slovenian champs as Tau raised its defensive level. Teletovic hit a three to reduce the gap to 6, followed by a steal and a layup by Sergi Vidal. Another steal by Prigioni, followed with a no-look pass to Mickeal, closed the quarter with the visitors ahead just 25-27.

Vladimir Golubovic - Union OlimpijaOlimpija’s blackout continued after the break, as it remained scoreless for the first four minutes in the quarter. Unfortunately for the hosts, things were not much better as only McDonald and Teletovic were able to hit the rim. It was Robinson with a layup-plus-foul that rescued Olimpija and returned the lead to the visitors, 29-30, midway through the second period. The joy didn’t last for long for Olimpija, as Tau found its momentum thanks to a full-court press that forced several turnovers. Led by McDonald and Mickeal, Tau needed less than four minutes to get its first double-digit lead. The zone defense used by Olimpija proved useless too, as the hosts didn’t need to play half-court basketball to keep adding points. A three by Mickeal followed by a fast break by Vidal extended the gap to 48-33, a 15-points advantage that remained steady at the end of the first half; 52-37.

The third quarter started in the same way the second ended; Tau managed to keep Olimpija’s shooters off balance and its pressure on defense caused several turnovers that allowed the hosts to run. Tau proceeded to outscored Olimpija 8-0 in the next three minutes to build a 20+-point margin, forcing an Olimpija timeout. Although Zupan nailed a three just after the break, the outlook didn’t change. Tau exploited each opportunity to run the court, always finding an open man either inside or outside. The difference kept growing step by step, as Olimpija was unable to find a good scoring rhythm and Tau didn’t decrease its intensity. Stanko Barac scored from the free throw line to give the hosts a 71-42 lead, but Olimpija reemerged and outscored Tau 1-9 in the last two minutes to reduce it to 72-50 at the end of the third quarter.

It was an illusion, however, as everything returned to its previous state at the beginning of the last quarter. Begic, who hurt TAU’s frontcourt in the first period, fouled out with six minutes remaining, as Ivanovic granted some Euroleague action to Ariel Eslava and youngster Matias Nocedal. Even with two non-regular players in its roster, Tau managed to reach a 30-point lead, 80-50, after 33 minutes when Eslava hit a left-handed hook shot. With the outcome in no doubt, the last minutes served for nothing but to allow both teams to play without pressure, giving fans some nice plays to cap an intense basketball Euroleague night.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"We managed to win by a big margin tonight. From my point of view, this is a very important win that almost take us to the Top 16. We will now try to fight hard to reach as high as possible in our regular season group. I didn't like our start of the game. Union Olimpija has a lot of talented players and good shooters, as they showed in the first quarter. We had a lot of troubles to play until we improved our aggressiveness."
POTOCNIK, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"First of all, I want to congratulate Dusko Ivanovic and Tau Ceramica for their win tonight. They deserved to win it, as they were better than us in all aspects of the game. We didn't find an answer to their aggressive defense in the second half. We could not follow their rhythm, but I would like to congratulate my players because they fought all 40 minutes long."

Players

MICKEAL, PETE
Tau Ceramica
"I felt really good today, it was my best day in the last two months. Our team played really well tonight, the best of it is that the team keeps winning even though I wasn't able to play at 100% in the last games, so I feel very happy for that. This game was very important even though Olimpija does not have a good record. They are a good team, however, and if we want to win our group we have to win games like this. The next game is Roma will be a very good test for us in the race for first place."
GOLUBOVIC, VLADIMIR
Union Olimpija
"We started well, but some of our best players were injured. They have players that have been in the Euroleague for several seasons. That put us in a tough and difficult situation. We committed a lot of turnovers and that was a key fact to explain this loss tonight."
