THE TAKE

Defending Euroleague champion Panathinaikos will look to improve on last week's performance when it hosts German champ Brose Baskets Bamberg on Wednesday night at the OAKA Olympic Hall in a Group C encounter. Panathinaikos survived a stern opening-game test from Lottomatica Roma to win 86-83 last week, while Bamberg was beaten by Chorale Roanne on a last-second three-pointer 61-64. This will be the first meeting ever between these two sides. In some ways, this could prove to ba game of clashing styles, as Bamberg bases its hopes on tough defens, while the Greens have become more attack-minded with the arrivals of Sarunas Jasikevicius and Vassilis Spanoulis. The style that wins out will be doubly important, as an uptempo game will not only play into that hands of Panathinaikos's scorers, but also makes head coach Zeljko Obradovic's deep bench more relevant. On the other hand, a slow tempo should help Bamberg head coach Dirk Bauermann get by with a smaller rotation. Last week, only seven Brose Baskets players saw more than 10 minutes of action. Panathinaikos is deepest in the backcourt, where in addition to Jasikevicius and Spanoulis, the Greens feature Sani Becirovic, Nikos Hatzvirettas, Milos Vujanic and Dimitrios Diamantidis, the Final Four MVP. By comparison, the top choices at Bamberg are playmaker Steffen Hamann, Demond Greene and Mark Dickel, who can expect to have their collective hands full all night. The visitors bring an experienced forward duo in Predrag Suput and Ademola Okulaja, who team up with big men Darren Fenn and Chris Ensminger to contest the likes of Mike Batiste, Andrija Zizic, Kostas Tsartsaris, Demos Dikoudis and small forward Kennedy Winston. The lessons from last week's loss rung loud and clear for the Bamberg men and going into this week they know they must cut down on their turnovers, improve their free-throw shooting and get more offensive rebounds. They've chosen a tough place to get better, however. Panathinaikos has won six straight and 12 out of its last 13 Euroleague games at OAKA arena – including two at the Final Four. Nevertheless, the underdog role should only help the visitors angle for an upset. Panathinaikos will concentrate on rebounding better and trying to force more Bamberg turnovers. Although the hosts are the clear favorites, Bamberg brings a veteran squad and a coach with experience playing in Greece, where Bauermann coached two seasons. Those wo keys that should help the visitors on their mission - to shock the Euroleague champs.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"Brose Baskets is a team that we must respect like we do all Euroleague teams. We saw their opening game against Chorale Roanne and obviously the pressure on them was huge, since they started as favorites. They fought hard until the last second and lost the battle in details and now they are coming to our gym to play more freely. They have players with big experience and also a very experienced coach, so we have to be very concentrated and think that there are no easy games in the Euroleague. We know we have some problems, but my players seem to understand, and they are working very hard to become better and better every day."
BAUERMANN, DIRK
Brose Baskets
"If there is ever a chance to beat them, maybe it's early in the season when they don't have their rhythm. But even now, it's going to be extremely difficult. Except our game against Roanne, we've played really well. And you don't go there to lose. You go there to give it all you got and put yourself in the position where you have a chance to steal the game. But it's going to take a superman effort to even be in the game. It would be great to steal one. But they're a great team with a great coach and great tradition. And they're so tough to beat at home. But still, it's great to play them and we look forward to the challenge."

Players

BECIROVIC, SANI
Panathinaikos
"For sure, we understand that there are no easy opponents in the Euroleague and, like we did against Lottomatica Roma in the opening game, we are ready to face Brose Baskets with the highest concentration. We have many new faces on our team and we need some time to get together and compete like the Euroleague champs. I guess all the teams are coming to face us with high motivation, so we are taking one game at a time and trying to perform better and better."
OKULAJA, ADEMOLA
Brose Baskets
"We will try to give it all we've got. On paper, they are the better team, but we believe we have a chance. For us to win, we have to play almost a perfect game. With their calibre of players, we can't allow any mistakes. We have to play for 40 minutes and not stop with 2.4 seconds left, like we did against Roanne. In the German League, you can make a mistake or two and make them up. But in the Euroleague, every mistake will be punished with points or them starting a run. I think we're feeling good. Our feeling against Roanne is that we beat ourselves. We shot almost 60% from two-point range and 47% from three-point range against them. We just had 22 turnovers and you can't expect to win if you have that many turnovers."
Dimitris Diamantidis - Panathinaikos Defending champion Panathinaikos held off a spirited challenge from Brose Baskets Bamberg to improve to 2-0 this season with 66-61 home win at the Athens Indoor Olympic Hall (OAKA) on Wednesday evening. The Greens took several modest leads and then went up 11 heading into the fourth quarter, but Predrag Suput and Ademola Okulaja carried the visitors to within 1 point in the last minute of the game. With the game on the line, Panathinaikos knew in whose hands to put the ball and Sarunas Jasikevicius and Vassilis Spanoulis made the needed free throws with the game on the line, while Suput came up empty for the German champs, who fell to 0-2 in Group C after losing two games by a total of 8 points. Jasikevicius led Panathinaikos with 11 points, Spanoulis added 9 and Demos Dikoudis and Dimitrios Diamantidis 8 each. Suput netted 16, Chris Ensminger 11 and Steffen Hamann 10 for Bamberg.

Both teams came out rather flat offensively and after four minutes of play were locked at 4-4. The hosts had already bricked 4 free throws, which meant that they could not capitalize on their trademark defense. Finally, Dikoudis and Darren Fenn exchanged baskets in the paint and then Suput hit a triple to put Brose Baskets in front, 8-9. Diamantidis’s immediate response from beyond the arc got the crowd involved and moments later Spanoulis found Dikoudis for a 13-9 lead that forced coach Dirk Bauermann to call a time-out. With the score at 15-11, the Greens switched to a zone-defense, only to be punished by Robert Garrett's three-point shot from the corner. Diamantidis drove and fed Batiste for a reverse layup, yet Garrett loaded once again his three-point pistol to tie the game at 17. In the ensuing seconds, Panathinaikos stiffed Brose Baskets’ perimeter offense and with free throws by Jasikevicius and Nikos Hatzivrettas to take a 20-17 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Predrag Suput - Brose BasketsThe second period commenced with the guests trying a zone defense. Panathinaikos remained scoreless for three minutes, until Hatzivrettas hit a buzzer-beating contested jumper. However it was quite clear that the hosts were struggling. So was Brose Baskets though and as a result they failed to rally back. Midway through the period, both sides combined for an abysmal 4-for-17 from downtown and clearly could not find any rhythm offensively. The guests settled for three-point shots, as the paint was a no-trespassing zone, and went ice-cold for more than five minutes. Eventually, Demond Greene knocked down a triple, good enough to end the drought and provide a much-needed spark. Mike Batiste and Spanoulis failed to connect and soon Ensminger hit a layup on the fast break to make it 24-24. Diamantidis stepped up with a gutsy drive and the free throw that came with it and then captain Fragiskos Alvertis nailed a triple to build a 30-24 lead. Hamann joined the party and hit one from downtown to keep Brose Baskets close on Panathinaikos’s heels. A couple of free-throws by Diamantidis allowed the hosts to breath, yet Okulaja’s jaw-dropping rejection on Hatzivrettas’s layup attempt emphatically proved that Brose Baskets was not willing to go down without a valiant fight and fixed the halftime score at 33-29.

In the second half, Panathinaikos stepped on the gas and Hatzivrettas’s jumper capped a quick 6-0 run. Fenn muscled his way inside to get the scoreboard rolling for the guests, but Diamantidis unlocked the zone defense with a great pass to Spanoulis. Brose Baskets did not give up though. First Suput converted a three-point play and then Hamann fired in a triple to follow Andrija Zizic’s hook shot and trim the lead to 43-38. Reserves Milos Vujanic and Kennedy Winston stepped on the court to break the game open, dominating the battle of the benches and forging a double-digit lead, 50-38. Ensminger responded with 5 points, but Jasikevicius came up big and hit a triple to keep Panathinaikos firmly in charge, 54-45 with one period left.

Early in the fourth quarter, Panathinaikos could not claim a commanding lead, as Suput carried Brose Baskets on his shoulders and kept their chances for a precious away win alive. A long jumper for Okulaja closed the gap to 60-55, heading into the final four minutes of the game, something that awakened the crowd. Nonetheless, the chants inspired neither Spanoulis nor Jasikevicius, while on the other end, nice passing translated into a triple by Garrett that turned it into a 2-point game. A timeout by Zeljko Obradovic was not enough to shift the momentum and thanks to a free throw by Fenn, Brose Baskets pulled within 62-61. With 37.8 seconds remaining, Jasikevicius drew a decisive foul and hit the two free throws. On the following possession, go-to-guy Suput tried unsuccessfully to tie the game and Spanoulis’s subsequent trip to the charity stripe sealed a close win for the Euroleague champions.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"In the first half we played some very effective defense. However, we failed to dominate the defensive rebounds. We are aware of this problem and we work hard in order to solve it. Additionally, we failed to finish the fast break, perhaps because we weren't fresh enough to do so. Finally, another area of concern was our percentage from downtown. I'm sure that through training we'll get better."
BAUERMANN, DIRK
Brose Baskets
"First of all, I want to congratulate Panathinaikos, coach Obradovic and his players. I'm disappointed that we didn't win the game, but I'm happy about our performance. We managed to control the game and I felt that in the fourth quarter we had the chance to win the game, but we failed to score on consecutive possessions. We played our game, however they are a great team and made the big plays down the stretch. Overall, I'm very proud of my team."

Players

DIKOUDIS, DIMOS
Panathinaikos
"Once again what matters the most is the fact that we won the game. There is no doubt that we can and should improve our performance; yet it's still too early. Had we made more three-point shots, we would have beaten them more easily. Things will get better. Our goal is to finish atop the Group."
OHLBRECHT, TIM
Brose Baskets
"It was a very close game and we definitely had the chance to win it. I'm very sad, even though we almost beat the European champions away from home. I feel confident about our team's chances to beat anyone and be very competitive. It was my second game at Euroleague level, so I’m still a little bit nervous. However, the more I play, the better I feel. I enjoyed the atmosphere; it was a nice experience."
