THE TAKE

Two teams hungry for a pot in the ULEB Cup quarterfinals square off in Moscow, Russia, on Tuesday when Khimki looks to overcome a 12-point deficit against Crvena Zvezda Belgrade in the second and final leg of the teams' eighthfinals series. Crvena Zvezda recorded an 89-77 victory two weeks ago in the first leg as regular season MVP Milan Gurovic stepped up with 34 points. But with Khimki now at home, anything can happen. The hosts will hope that their ho,e-court advantage plus a veteran roster full of big-game experience, including 2004 ULEB Cup final MVP Kelly McCarthy and proven Euroleague talents Ruben Wolkowysky, Melvin Booker and Ademola Okulaja, will be enough to overcome the Crvena Zvezda challenge. Khimki went 4-1 at home during the regular season, winning by an average of 13 points per game. On the other hand, Crvena Zvezda was 3-2 on the road, though its two defeats were blowouts by a total of 44 points. In many ways, any game involving Crvena Zvezda rides on the form of Gurovic, but big nights by centers Pero Antic and Petar Popovic, who had 14 points in 18 minutes off the bench last time, and guards Vuk Radivojevic and Antonio Burks, who posted 22 two weeks ago, could make the difference for the visiting side. Big Maciej Lampe and scorer Oscar Torres were key substitutes last time, as Khimki got more than half its points off the bench. That depth could be clutch in this do-or-die encounter, as Khimki must find the right defensive options to stop Gurovic and co., while remaining fresh enough on the attack to build the needed advantage. As is often the case in two-game series, this deciding game could come down to the closing minutes with both teams having a shot at the quarterfinals. Then the question will be: Which team has what it takes to make the big defensive stops with the game on the line?

Quotes Head Coaches

SAKOTA, DRAGAN
Crvena Zvezda
"We lost on Saturday in the semifinal of the domestic Cup against FMP but I said to my players in the lockerroom after that loss there was no time for mourning. If there was anything positive in the game we lost on Saturday that is the fact that we saved our energy for game with Khimki in the ULEB Cup. That game will be extremely hard for sure. We have a 12-point suficit but we must play like there had been no first game in Belgrade. Within several days Khimki managed to beat both Russian teams that play in Euroleague. They beat Dynamo and CSKA and that tells all about Khimki strength. My players are aware of that and I am sure they will do their best to reach the ULEB Cup quaterfinals. With patient play in offense and big defensive work that goal is reachable."

Players

Igor Milosevic - Crvena Zvezda Crvena Zvezda advanced to the ULEB Cup quarterfinals for the second consecutive season by downing Khimki 76-93 in the Moscow region, Russia on Tuesday to sweep their two-way series. Zvezda had already beaten Khimki 89-77 in the 1st leg in Belgrade, Serbia two weeks ago and will face Real Madrid or Alba Berlin in the next round. As usual, Milan Gurovic led the winners with 21 points. Igor Milosevic added 13, Petar Popovic and Vuk Radivojevic each had 12 while Tadija Dragicevic chipped in 10 for Zvezda. Maciej Lampe had 20 points for Khimki, Ademola Okulaja and Kelly McCarty each had 14 while Gianmarco Pozzecco scored 10 points for the hosts, that had a bitter end to an otherwise satisfying first-ever ULEB Cup season. Gurovic and an outstanding Radivojevic fueled a 8-26 opening run which sealed the series outcome for good. Lampe paced Khimki in the second quarter, but a balanced offense allowed Zvezda to keep a safe margin, 37-51, at halftime. Pero Antic and Milosevic stepped up after the break, as Zvezda boosted its margin to 42-65 and cruised to a big road win.

Khimki went scoreless in the opening 3 minutes, while Nenad Misanovic dunked it and Gurovic fired in his first three-pointer for a 0-5 Zvezda lead. Khimki kept missing one shot after another, while an easy layup by Milosevic forced the hosts to call timeout at 0-7. Radivojevic capped a 0-9 opening run for Zvezda, as Vitaliy Fridzon finally got Khimki going with a triple. Milosevic and Radivojevic answered from downtown for a 3-15 Zvezda lead. Pozzecco followed a layup with a big triple but a 0-11 run in which Radivojevic had 5 points made it a 18-point game, 8-26. Pozzecco and McCarty brought Khimki within 11-26 after 10 minutes, as Zvezda now had a 27-point lead in the series. Fridzon tried to ignit the Khimki comeback but free throws by Gurovic gave his team a 13-29 lead. Okulaja and Lampe stepped up with consecutive baskets, but Popovic followed a layup with a put-back basket to keep Zvezda way ahead, 17-33. Lampe kept pacing Khimki but Antonio Burks buried a triple for a 21-36 Zvezda lead midway through the second quarter. McCarty joined the three-point festival while Lampe hit 4 free throws to get Khimki within 28-41. Dragicevic stepped up with a put-back layup while Gurovic scored off a steal and buried another three-pointer, good for a 32-48 Zvezda lead. Lampe hit free throws while Dragicevic and McCarty traded triples to fix the halftime score at 37-51.

Gianmarco Pozzecco - KhimkiAntic scored right after the break and then followed Misanovic's basket with a layup to give Zvezda its biggest lead that far, 39-57. McCarty tried to change things with free throws, but Radivojevic answered with a layup and Milosevic buried a triple from the right wing to make it a 20-point game, 42-62, after 23 minutes. Khimki kept struggling to score while a red hot Milosevic shined with a three-point play. Okulaja shined with 4 unanswered points but Zvezda kept its momentum going. The guests found a new go-to guy, who scored 6 quick points on free throws and a layup for a 50-71 Zvezda lead. Antic and Ruben Wolkowyski dunked it, while free throws by McCarty and Pozzecco brought Khimki within 57-73 after three quarters. The outcome of the series was already clear but Khimki kept trying to rally in its last 10 minutes in the ULEB Cup season. Wolkowyski shined with a three-point play, igniting a 9-3 run in which Okulaja had 6 points to get Khimki within 66-76. Popovic and Lampe exchanged baskets but free throws by Milosevic gave Zvezda a 68-80 margin with 5 minutes to go. Gurovic shined with consecutive triples, as Zvezda not only left Russia with a quarterfinals spot, but sent a message which echoed all around the ULEB Cup with this resounding road win.

Head Coaches

KEMZURA, KESTUTIS
Khimki
"We lost that game before it even started. My guys had no emotions. We knew that Crvena Zvezda plays tough defense, on the verge of foul and we ready for that. Thoroughly analyzed all the combinations. Now it seems that we were mistaken. We were like moldering clay showing absolutely no steadiness. Players were not aggressive, not on time at defense, gave them opportunities to shoot... Some of my guys didn't show all they could do. It was all decided at the first quarter. After that, the pressure of the result, of the needed difference was put upon us. We had to cut Crvena's 20 points lead! We always felt that and could do nothing. It was the end."
SAKOTA, DRAGAN
Crvena Zvezda
"We deserved that win. We deserved the qualification to the next round. Don't look at low spot in the group standings - we had very strong rivals in the regular season. And now we'll have to force our way through a very tough half of the playoff."
