BC Khimki Moscow Region hopes to finalize its spot in the 2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season on Friday when it hosts Le Mans Sarthe Basket in the the second leg of their third qualifying round series. Khimki, which is undefeated through all five Qualifying Rounds games thus far, enters the contest after notching a 56-70 victory in France. Accordingly, a win, tie or loss by fewer than 14 points will place Khimki in the Euroleague for the second straight season. Le Mans, which is 1-1 in the road in the two qualifying games it has played, must win by more than 14 to make it back to Europe’s premier competition after a one-season absence. However none of Le Mans’s three victories to date have been by as many points. The series winner will have to wait till Sunday before knowing which Regular Season group it will join. The keys to victory in Game 1 were on the wings, where Thomas Kelati and Keith Langford scored 19 points each on a combined 7-of-9 three-point shooting. Le Mans as a team was just 2 for 11 from downtown. On offense, Le Mans will need its marksman, Ben Dewar, to heat up from outside in order to create space for big men J.P. Batista and Alain Koffi in the paint. At the other end, Charles Kahudi, Alex Acker and Antoine Diot must find a way to shit down Khimki’s big guns, Kelati and Langford. One intriguing matchup that could impact the game is at point guard, where Le Mans’s diminutive backup, Marc-Anoine-Pellin, will compete with one of the game’s tallest playmakers, Zoran Planinic. The two are separated by nearly a third of a meter. Le Mans must be at its best to win by the needed difference on the road. Expect to see the visitors press and play aggressive at both ends to gain an advantage. But with experienced players for Khimki, including three-time Euroleague champ Aleksey Savrasenko, three others who have been to Final Fours and European champ Raul Lopez on the bench, Khimki is the favorite to protect its lead and reach the Euroleague again.
