THE TAKE

A direct fight for first place in Last 16 Group I takes place in Thessaloniki, Greece, where Aris BSA 2003 hosts DKV Joventut on Tuesday at 20:00 CET. Joventut leads Group I with a 3-1 record and will advance to the Quarterfinals with a win. It will clinch first place if it wins and Alba Berlin loses against Le Mans. Aris will improve its chances to advance with a win but cannot mathematically reach the next round in Last 16 Game 5. It will be a special game for former Joventut center Andy Betts, who is in great shape recently, as he averaged 16 points on 13-of-17 shooting in its last 2 games. Betts will see extended playing time, as big man Dragan Labovic is not with the team anymore. Demos Dikoudis will be ready to offer toughness and experience in the paint while Michalis Kakiouzis will try to open the court with his shots from downtown, driving skills and high basketball IQ. Betts is ready for a big battle against two-time Eurocup champion Edu Hernandez-Sonseca and physical center Alain Koffi. Henk Norel returned to action, ready to offer post skills and strength under the boards. Kakiouzis is ready to use his experience against a similar yet younger power forward as Luka Bogdanovic while Dikoudis and Nikos Barlos are ready for a strong matchup against Antonio Bueno. Both teams have great shooters available at both wings, especially since Aris inked Euroleague regular season scoring champ Matt Walsh. Jeremy Richardson is a threat from downtown while Nikos Hatzivrettas provides experience and defense. Aris may use Keydren Clark at off-guard along with playmaker Aaron Miles at some point during the game. Richardson must use his quickness and athleticism against Joventut's best scorer, Clay Tucker, who will have an increased role if Uros Tripkovic stays sidelined. Meanwhile, David Jelinek will see more playing time under these circumstances. Joventut is deep at small forward, with one-of-a-kind athlete Christian Eyenga and all-around youngster Pere Tomas ready to step on court. Miles and Clark will share the hosts' point guard duties along with Ivan Paunic. Miles is ready for an interesting matchup against defensive stopper Mario Fernandez. Meanwhile, Kris Valters will try to use his court vision and determination against Miles and Clark. Joventut must play up-tempo, run its offense through Tucker and power the offensive board to increase its chances to beat Aris in front of a great basketball atmosphere. Meanwhile, Aris must try to get Walsh and Richardson involved, as well as taking advantage of its experienced players under the baskets.

Quotes Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Aris BSA 2003
"DKV Joventut has been a quality team throughout the Eurocup. They have got a lot of weapons. This is a qualifying game for both teams and obviously they will try to take advantage of it and get the victory which leads to the playoffs. We're looking forward to this game and we're looking very much forward to the great support of our crowd."
ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"In Thessaloniki we will face a team that has been designed to win the Eurocup title. We are travelling toGreece with the idea of doing what we did in Le Mans. Aris is a very dangerous team and if we are not at 100 percent we will have problems. They have a lot of experience and our health issues could be an advantage for them, also."

Players

BETTS, ANDY
Aris BSA 2003
"DKV Joventut is a team that likes to play very fast, so we will have to control them. We must try not to play their kind of game and to slow them down a little bit. In addition, we will have to play very hard defense for 40 minutes. It’s going to be very tough, but we have to win."
TOMAS, PERE
DKV Joventut
"This game against Aris will be very important for us. We are on the right track in the Eurocup and we want to stay that way. I think that if we win we will take a giant step forward. In this group, all rivals are tough and Aris is a historic club with great players, it will be complicated. We can neverforget the atmosphere in their gym. It is not easy to play there."
Matt Walsh - Aris BSA 2003 (photo arisbc.gr)Aris BSA 2003 improved its chances to reach the Eurocup Quarterfinals in Last 16 Group I by thrashing DKV Joventut 84-54 in Thessaloniki, Greece on Tuesday night. Aris improved to 3-2 and will reach the next round as soon as tomorrow if Alba Berlin (2-2) beats Le Mans (1-3) due to its tie-break advantage against its direct opponents. Meanwhile, Joventut dropped to 3-2 but controls its own destiny in the competition, as it will reach the next round regardless other scores if it beats Alba at home next week. Jeremy Richardson paced the winners with 19 points on 5-of-7 three-pointers. Matt Walsh added 17, Keydren Clark had 16, Andy Betts got 11 while Michalis Kakiouzis contributed 10 for Aris, that held Joventut to its all-time low scoring in European club competitions this decade. Luka Bogdanovic led Joventut with 16 points. A three-pointer by Clay Tucker gave Joventut its last lead, 10-11, midway through the first quarter. A 14-2 run in which Clark and Walsh struck from downtown made it a double-digit game, 24-13, soon after that. Aris boosted its margin to 47-32 at halftime and used a 16-0 run to seal the outcome, 76-43, long before the final buzzer.

Richardson got Aris going with a three-pointer but Kris Valters answered from downtown and Pere Tomas added free throws for a 3-6 Joventut lead. Aris played aggresive in offense, going to the foul line often, as free throws by Walsh and a put-back dunk by Betts gave the hosts a 8-6 edge. Tucker sank a long jumper and soon added a three-pointer to put Joventut back ahead, 10-11. Joventut had entered the foul bonus, however, as Aris tried to make the most out of it. Clark scored in penetration and Betts added free throws to make the guests call timeout at 15-11. Clark capped a 9-0 run with a three-pointer and Walsh soon nailed one from beyond the arch to make it a double-digit game, 24-13. Bogdanovic joined the three-point shootout but a put-back layup by Kakiouzis and a buzzer-beating floating jumper by Clark fixed the score at 28-16 after 10 minutes. Bogdanovic insisted from downtown early in the second quarter but Clark and Kakiouzis shined with consecutive layups for a 32-19 Aris lead. Mario Fernandez tried to ignite Joventut's comeback with an uncontested layup that Clark bettered with a three-point play. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca dunked it and Tomas soon added layup to give Joventut some hope at 37-25. Aris slowed down the game tempo and a big three-pointers by Richardson forced the guests to call timeout at 40-26. Valters sank free throws and soon added a driving layup but Walsh and Demos Dikoudis kept Aris way ahead, 44-30. Aaron Miles scored off a midcourt steal but a tip-in by Alain Koffi brought Joventut within 47-32 at halftime.

Walsh scored down low immediately after the break but a fallaway jumper by Valters gave Joventut some hope at 49-34. Bueno shined with a big block on Betts' dunk attempt and a mid-range jumper but Walsh sank another shot and Richardson added a two-handed dunk for a 17-point Aris lead at 53-36. Bogdanovic buried his third triple but Miles stepped up with a driving layup and Betts added a layup off a spin move in the low post, good for a 57-41 Aris lead. Joventut kept struggling to score and Kakiouzis beat the buzzer with a three-pointer that broke the game open, 60-41. Joventut called timeout and Hernandez-Sonseca sank a turnaround jumper but Aris kept dominating the game with outstanding defense. Meanwhile, Clark and Richardson buried consecutive three-pointers to boost the hosts' lead to 66-43. Free throws by Walsh sealed the outcome, 69-43, at the end of the third quarter. Richardson nailed his fourth three-pointer early in the fourth quarter, as Joventut was scoreless for 3 minutes. Richardson shined again with a backdoor layup and a tip-in by Kakiouzis capped a mamooth 16-0 run that made it a 33-point game, 76-43. Everything was said and done, already, as all Aris fans were celebrating a big home win. Meanwhile, Joventut must bounce back right away for its do-or-die game against Alba next week.

Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Aris BSA 2003
"It was a great performance by our team and certainly a very rewarding moment for us. The players responded in a great way after our defeat in Trikala of the Greek League. Regardless of the final score, we were playing against a very strong opponent. Up until now, that team had 8 wins and 2 losses in the Eurocup, one of the best records this season. We played well and as a true team on both ends of the court. Also, we got enormous support from our fans, in typical Aris fans' fashion. We rewarded them with a good show, they deserved it. I want to give all credit to my partners, Dimitris Priftis and Stefanos Dedas. They talked basketball to my players and I talked life to them. All I had to do was to speak to the heart and soul of the players."
ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"Congratulations to Aris. They had one of their best games this season. On the other hand, within the last four days, we've had our worst games. I hope that we will beat Alba in order to qualify to the next round. You never expect to lose by that much, but Aris has a lot of high-level players and a very good coach. I can't understand how this team holds a low position in the Greek League standings. Also, it seems incredible to me that the fans of Aris supported their team in such a passionate way, despite of their bad loss three days ago. This kind of behavior gave a lot of tranquility to the players of Aris."
