THE STAKES

Rudupis took a road win in Holland in its first European appearance, and has a chance to take a big step at home against Aris Thessaloniki. Rudupis will try to capitalize on its momentum, while Aris needs to get back in the thick of the race with its first win. Aris is a team of new players and needs to work better as unit, but it will be tough on the road as Prienai fans will try to inspire the home squad.

THE TAKE

Twenty turnovers and bad shooting percentage, 35.8 on two-pointers, are numbers to change and forgot for Aris, that also need a more team-oreinted play. Five players in double digit of scoring were the key for Rudupis in week-1, ilke an excellent performance from downtown (8 for 19). Five players able to play on the perimeter and score from long distance, together on the court are the main tool for the home team, a difficult situation to defend for a squad with size like Aris will have to use favorable missmatch. A not to miss mathcup between veteran Dainius Salenga, and 210-11 week-2 MVP Christos Tapoutos.

Bogris hit a jumper and Davis a layup, then Viskontas and Kuzminskas scored 2-pointers from outside, pushing the score to 33-36. Davis hit a layup and free throw for Aris, then Juskevicius answered for Rudupis, as the visitors’ lead climbed to 37-47 entering the final minute of the quarter. James banged in a shot from the outside for the visitors, but Simas Buterlevicius knocked down a two-pointer at the buzzer as the quarter ended with Aris on top 39-49. Mavraides resumed where he left off, hitting a three-pointer to open the fourth and extending the Aris lead to 39-52. Rudupis finally stopped the visitors’ momentum by hitting the next 4 points on baskets by Gintaras Kadziulis amd Juskevicius, but Muldrow hit from downtown to keep pace with a Kadziulis triple. After Sergio Kerusch hit a layup to keep the Aris lead in double digits, 46-57, Kadziulis and James swapped triples, then Salenga hit a 2-pointer from outside, clipping the Aris lead to 51-60. After an Aris timeout, Muldrow hit from the outside and Kuzminskas knocked down 2 free throws, followed by a three-pointer by James to further extend the Aris lead to 53-65. Rudupis managed to cut 4 from the lead on an Orelik dunk and Butkevicius jumper, but it was too little, too late as Aris took the win 60-71.

Head Coaches

SESKUS, VIRGINIJUS
BC Rudupis
"The main reason for losing was a bad game in the third quarter when Aris gained an important advantage and started believing they could win. Mistakes in defense and unexpectedly accurate three-point shoots of the opposite team made us lose the game. It‘s sad we lost as we had a chance to win, however, I have to admit the opposite team is not a weak one. They analyzed our game and our shooters did not have an opportunity to shoot freely. We did not shoot accurately and were not fortunate to win."
ALEXANDRIS, VANGELIS
Aris BSA 2003
"Today we had a good game but it was not easy. Our team played a great game that is why they deserved to win. The main break point appeared on the second half of third quarter when we put more attention to the defense, our attacks were more successful and we were able to lead the game and keep the advantage till the end of the game. I wish Rudupis success as I know it‘s their first season in this competition. I believe that in a country like yours where basketball is so popular and where are many talented players the success will find it‘s way to you."

KADZIULIS, GINTARAS
BC Rudupis
"We were determined to win this game and we did not need additional motivation. This was not our day but we all did the best we could do. However, the opposite team surprised us with their accurate shoots when we did not expect them to do so and we lacked accuracy in offense."
MULDROW, SAM
Aris BSA 2003
"We won the game because we were strong as a team, we gave support to each other. Rudupis did not surprise us as we had made a great analysis on their game and followed our coach’s instructions."
