THE TAKE

Hemofarm Stada hosts Valencia Basket in the two teams’ Group B opener looking to start the season strong. Neither team is a stranger to the competition and the quality of the individual match-ups makes this one of the marquee contests of Week 1. All eyes will be on two of Europe’s top young talents- Hemofarm’s Milan Macvan, last season’s Eurocup Rising Star Award winner, and Valencia’s Victor Claver. The two forwards were on opposite sides of the final of the EuroBasket 2009 in September, and even though Macvan had a larger roll for Serbia, it was Claver’s Spain that carried home the gold. Expectations on the two players are much bigger at the club level and they try to live up to them. At the forward spot, Hemofarm can also count on Milos Borisov’s five-year’s worth of Eurocup experience and newcomer Jarod Stevenson’s proven scoring ability. In last year’s Eurocup, Stevenson averaged 11 points for Maroussi. Florent Pietrus and Matt Nielson, who was on Lietuvos Rytas’s 2006-07 ULEB Cup runner-up squad, round out an athletic and experienced group of forwards for Valencia. Another up-and-coming star for Hemofarm, 2.22-meter Boban Marjanovic, will battle against Kosta Perovic in the paint. Both teams have guards who can light it up. The duo of Rafa Martinez and youngster Nando De Colo have shined in the opening weeks of the Spanish League and are bolstered by recent acquisition of three-point ace Thomas Kelati. Facing the high-scoring visiting backcourt are Stefan Markovic and Miljan Pavkovic, who both averaged double figures in points for Hemofarm in last year’s Eurocup campaign that took them all the way to the semifinals. Valencia will no doubt prove to be a tough Week 1 challenge for a Hemofarm in a battle between two teams that played in the Final Eight last season.

"It is only the first game and even though it is still not crucial, we want to be in the Eurocup Finals, so we have to start strong from the beginning. I hope that injuries respect us, because only injuries can stop this pace we have acquired. Hemofarm is a tough team with quality in both the backcourt and the frontcourt. Macvan is back after a strong injury and he's an important player for them. We have to play serious and go for the win. Apart from Macvan they have Marjanovic inside and Jagodnik, an experienced player, outside plus more good permieter players. It will be a tough game for us."

KARADZIC, STEVAN
Hemofarm Stada
"Congratulations to Valencia. We did our best and played on a high level in the first half of the game. Valencia had poor shooting average which was good for us and we saw our chances in that. Like in the few games prior to this one, we slowed down in the third period. Valencia is a strong team and its position in the Spanish League talks about it. My team had very bad defense in the third period and that was our weakness in this game."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Power Electronics
"We said before the game that it is difficult to play with such a long trip after having played on Sunday. We won because of our defense. We struggled from the three-point line, which is difficult to understand. We have very good shooter but played tough defense in the second half. We showed everyone how to win a difficult game with good defense. That was the key, because we were frustrated in the first half with so many open shots missed. We were doing things well but shots did not fall in. We improved our defense after the break to win the game. I understood that De Colo could not win this game on his own and that is why I tried to play with Nando and Marko Marinovic together on court. It is always good to start with a win, especially on the road."
PEROVIC, KOSTA
Power Electronics
"It has been a difficult win, because we did not play well in the first half, missing many three-point shots and playing without confidence. The second half was totally different. We got our confidence back and played really well when we needed it. It was very important for us to start the Eurocup with a road win and now we are looking forward to face Le Mans next week. This is just the beginning of the season but this win may allow us to play better in the future. We came to play in Serbia four times in 2009. I love to be back in my country, with the chance to see my family and friends after the game."
