THE TAKE

The Polish champion hosts the Greek champion in an important Group B clash over the weekend between Asseco Prokom and Panathinaikos. Prokom is in fourth place with a 2-2 record, but has started the season in superb form at home. Prokom has won both its games in Poland thanks to excellent play from the backcourt of Dan Ewing and David Logan and a strong defense that limited its opponents to 61 points per game. Meanwhile Panathinaikos is in a three-way tie for the top spot in the group with a 3-1 mark. Its only loss did come on the road at Barcelona, where Prokom also lost two weeks ago. This game will be a clash of two of the most talented backcourt in the competition this season. Prokom head coach Tomas Pacesas, a former Euroleague point guard himself, puts his team in the hands of Ewing and Logan, whose combined 32.5 points per game make them the highest scoring guard duo in the league. Aleksej Nesovic has been reliable in reserve too. However Panathinaikos’s guard rotation is as deep as it gets, with Sarunas Jasikevicius, Dimitris Diamantidis, Vassilis Spanoulis and Drew Nicholas playing the majority of the time and Dusan Kecman and Nikos Hatzivrettas coming on for special assignments. Stratos Perperoglou supports them from the small forward spot, where he will be tested by Ronnie Burrell and Filip Dylewicz. In the paint, Pat Burke, Koko Archibong and rookie starter Adam Hrycaniuk will battle the likes of Mike Batiste, Nikola Pekovic, Antonis Fotsis and Kostas Tsartsaris. Prokom will have a few issues it must deal with to hold off the Greens, including avoiding foul trouble and controlling the glass, where it currently ranks atop the Euroleague with 37.3 rebounds per game. The battle at the small forward position could have major impact on the outcome, since Panathinaikos head coach Zeljko Obradovic will likely use a three-guard lineup at times, which could cause Prokom trouble if it wants to use the bigger Burrell or Dylewicz. However, if Prokom can flip that advantage and use its size there to score and rebound, the hosts will have a real chance to remain perfect at home, where they have won five straight dating back to last season.

GAME QUOTES

Asseco Prokom
  • Center Pat Burke spent three seasons early in career playing for his next opponent, Panathinaikos. Burke won the 2000 Euroleague with Panathinaikos and three Greek League crowns with the Greens between 1999 and 2001. He played under current Panathinaikos head coach Zeljko Obradovic and alongside forwards Fragiskos Alvertis and Antonis Fotsis.
  • Asseco Prokom has now won five consecutive Euroleague home games dating back to last season. The club lost its first home game under head coach Tomas Pacesas shortly after he took over midway through last season, but the club bounced back and has not lost at home since.
  • Guard David Logan’s scoring has decreased in each Euroleague game so far this season, starting with 25 in the season openers down to 8 points in Week 4.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"We are facing a very aggressive team in offense and defense, so we have to be very concentrated and determined to take the win in Poland. They play an up tempo game and they are excellent in offensive rebounds. Meanwhile, our mission is difficult since we are coming from a big domestic derby against Olympiacos. We had high motivation to beat them, so after such a performance we have to get our motivation back in order to accomplish an important road win."

Players

TSARTSARIS, KOSTAS
Panathinaikos
"The game against Prokom is very important for us. Perhaps their name doesn’t mean much to the Greek fans, but we definitely know that this team has quality and fights all the opponents with the same desire. Panathinaikos needs this win to stay at the top of the group and fight for the first place until the end of the regular season. To make it happen, we have to play really hard and have the best reaction after a big victory over Olympiacos in the Greek League. In the Euroleague, no game is easy, but we are always ready to face the challenge."
Vassilis Spanoulis - PanathinaikosDimitris Diamantidis scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to lead Panathinaikos to a 60-67 road win over pesky Asseco Prokom Sopot on Wednesday in Poland. The Greens improved to 4-1 in Group B before visiting Zalgiris next week, Prokom, which saw its five-game home-court winning streak snapped, fell to 2-3. The Greek champs finished the first half on a 2-11 tear to take a 24-36 halftime lead and seemed in control throughout the third period. But Prokom stormed back as Ronnie Burrell scored half the points in an 8-0 start to the fourth quarter and Aleksej Nesovic soon hit a triple to tie the game at 50-50. But Diamantidis got some help from Vassilis Spanoulis to score the key baskets down the stretch to sink Prokom. Diamantidis finished with 15 points and 4 steals, while Nikola Pekovic added 15 points and Spanoulis 12 for the winners. David Logan paced Prokom with 16 points and Pat Burke added 11 against his former team.

Nikos Katzivrettas took advantage of his first start of the season to fire in a jumper on the opening possession, before Adam Hrycaniuk scored on the offensive glass for the hosts. Pekovic and Mike Batiste used their size to push the Greens to a 2-7 lead. A Koko Archibong runner and a Logan three tied the score as Prokom got its feet. Burke matched Diamantidis’s three-pointer with a basket-plus-foul. Logan heated up and started to trade baskets with Panathinaikos before Burrell scored on the break to put the hosts ahead 16-14. Pekovic tied the game from the line, but a Burrell jumper gave Prokom an 18-16 lead at the end of the period.

Ronnie Burrell - Asseco ProkomA Drew Nicholas three-pointer gave the visitors the start to the second period they wanted, but Prokom slowed the game and Burke scored inside to keep things close. However a Batiste jumper and a Vassilis Spanoulis fast-break layup gave Panathinaikos a small cushion to work with. Antonis Fotsis’s first points made it 20-25 before Burke answered for Prokom in the paint. Panathinaikos pressed forward as drew his fifth foul and remained perfect from the line and Fotsis added a bucket as the lead reached 7. Prokom had trouble getting the shots it wanted against the Panathinaikos zone defense, while Spanoulis used his speed to pick up a pair of baskets, giving the Greens their first double-digit advantage. Diamantidis would add 2 more free throws to polish off a 2-11 end to the half for a 24-36 Panathinaikos lead at the break.

Dusan Sakota opened the second half with a basket to give the Greens their biggest lead yet. Logan showed signs of life for Prokom with a triple, but a Pekovic basket kep Paanthinaikos in control. After Archibong scored, Hrycaniuk converted a three-point play as Prokom narrowed the gap to 32-40. Nicholas scored in transition and Fotsis fired in a three to put Panathinaikos up by 13, however Archibong continued his strong play first with a three-pointer and then by drawing a charge from Kostas Tsartsaris at the other end. Logan drove baseline to cut it to 8 again, but Batsiste put his team up 37-47 at the end of the period.

Prokom looked far more determined than before one the fourth quarter began. Burrell started things with a basket, then Dan Ewing dunked on the break and free throws by Burrell and Filip Dylewicz capped an 8-0 run that put the Polish champs right back in the game. Diamantidis ended Panathinaikos’s drought with a three-point play, bur Prokom wasn’t done. After a basket by Ewing, Nesovic connected on a second-chance triple to tie the score at 50-50. Spanoulis’s free throws were cancelled by a Dylewicz basket underneath, but Diamantidis muscled through the defense for another basket-plus-foul. Logan made 2 from the line only to see Spanoulis hit a three for a 54-58 lead. The Greens’ defense forced a 24-second violation and soon Diamantidis stretched the lead to 6 from the line. Logan answered with a runner with less than two minutes to play, but Diamantidis again stood tall for the visitors as he drove and earned a goaltending call. And when Pekovic added a basket to make it 56-64 with a minute left, the home team’s last hopes were dashed and Panathinaikos held on for the win.

Head Coaches

PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"We tried hard, but we lost because of the rebounds and the turnovers. Panathinaikos grabbed 17 offensive boards and scored 25 points from second chances. Details always count in basketball and this is a lesson we got tonight and we have to pay attention. Panathinaikos is a very good team and we tried to play against them the best possible way. We gave a battle, but unfortunately we lost the game."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"It was the game that we were expecting to have. We came to play here three days after the match versus Olympiacos and I am satisfied because all my players had big motivation and concentration. We played good defense, especially Spanoulis and Hatzivrettas did great jobs at the beginning of the game against the guards of our opponent. We also managed to control the boards and get second chance points. I am not satisfied with our offense, because we missed open shots and made some turnovers at the end of the third and at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Every team that plays against Panathinaikos has a special motivation, so there is no place where we can have an easy match ."
HATZIVRETTAS, NIKOS
Panathinaikos
"Prokom is a strong and athletic team that never quits. We knew their strong points and we tried to play with concentration and defensive spirit. We could have had an easier win, if we would have had better shooting percentages."
