THE TAKE

Aris BSA 2003 aims to punch its ticket to the Last 16 when it hosts KK Zadar in a Group C contest on Tuesday. Aris sits atop the group standings with a 3-1 record and is undefeated at home, but faces this game with a new-look roster that has had little time together. Last week the team parted ways with leading scorer Juan Dixon and big men Michalis Kakiouzis and Nikos Barlos are out with injuries. In their place guard Ivan Paunic and power forward Dragan Labovic signed. Meanwhile Zadar enters the game with its back to the wall knowing that a loss coupled with a Hapoel Jerusalem win in the week’s other Group C encounter will end the club’s chances of reaching the Last 16. Zadar defeated Jerusalem in its last game before the winter break behind Vladimer Boisa’s 21-point, 14-rebound explosion, but was unable to overcame a big loss to Hapoel the previous week, leaving the tiebreaker in Jerusalem’s pocket. Aris was also a big winner before the break, blasting Siauliai 85-67 as Kakiouzis scored 24. Without him and Barlos, extra responsibility falls on the shoulders of center Andy Betts and forward Demos Dikoudis to fend off Zadar’s deep frontline led by Boisa and Hrvoje Peric at forward and centers Tomislav Ruzic and Trent Plaisted. Aaron Miles guides the Aris attack with Keydren Clark spelling him and they distribute the ball to sharpshooter Nikos Hatzivrettas and scorer Jeremy Richardson. Without Dixon, the possibility of Miles and Clark playing at times together increases. Zadar counters with Rok Stipcevic, Marko Car and Damir Rancic as its top guards and Micah Downs joining Peric at small forward. The pressure will be on the hosts to perform with a new-look roster, while Zadar sits back hoping its depth will give it an advantage in the end. What unrolls figures to be of great excitement and perhaps a thrilling finish as both teams desperately target a win that will greatly impact the tight Group C race.

Quotes Head Coaches

KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Aris BSA 2003
"There is no doubt that it’s our most important game in the competition. We need the victory to qualify to the Last 16. Zadar is tough in defense and they fight from beginning to end, in every match. Their game is based on the speed and on the long-distance shots. We must be perfectly concentrated in defense, especially on players such as playmaker Stipcevic. Also, we must control the rebounds and don’t let the opponents have open shots from the perimeter. We count on our fans’ support and we will need a great deal of patience throughout the 40 minutes of play."

DIKOUDIS, DIMOS

"We must win this game, in order to make it to the Last 16 already. The victory would also let us maintain the first place of the group, which is our second aim to fulfill. Zadar is a dangerous opponent, which has got talented players. They like leading the games up to high scores. They have good shooters, but we will try to impose our tempo and tactics. If we play well in defense, I think that we will get the victory. We did it in Croatia and we can do it again on our home court."
Aris BSA 2003 made it to the Eurocup Last 16 and set a do-or-die showdown to win Group C next week by downing Zadar 73-67 in Thessaloniki, Greece on Tuesday. Aris leads Group C with a 4-1 record and faces Hapoel Jerusalem - second at 3-2 - on the road next week. Aris can afford a four-point loss and still finish first. Meanwhile, Zadar went down to 2-3 and is mathematically out of the Last 16 race. Aaron Miles paced the winners with 16 points. Jeremy Richardson added 11 while Keydren Clark and Nikos Hatzivrettas each had 10 for Aris. Hrvoje Peric had 13 points for Zadar, Rok Stipcevic added 11 and Damir Rancic 10. A put-back layup by Peric allowed Zadar to get a 19-20 edge at the end of an exciting first quarter that saw 16 lead changes. Miles and Clark stepped up soon after that to make Aris get an eight-point lead, 41-33, at halftime. Aris improved its defense after the break. Meanwhile, an unbelievable buzzer-beating triple by Hatzivrettas made it a 14-point game, 62-48, after 30 minutes. Peric, Vladimir Boisa and Rancic managed to bring Zadar within 70-67 already in the final minute but free throws by Hatzivrettas and Miles sealed the outcome down the stretch.

Stipcevic got Zadar going with consecutive baskets but a three-pointer by Richardson and a layup by Demos Dikoudis gave Aris an early 5-4 lead. Marco Car struck from downtown but a dunk by Andy Betts and a jumper by Miles allowed Aris to restore a 9-8 edge. Trent Plaisted scored twice around the basket but Miles kept pacing Aris for a 13-12 score. Peric and a red hot Miles traded baskets and a jumper by Tomislav Ruzic provided another lead change, 15-16. Hatzivrettas and Betts stepped up for Aris but a put-back layup by Peric allowed Zadar to get a 19-20 edge after 10 minutes. Rancic downed a three-pointer and Ruzic added a layup to give Zadar a 21-25 lead early in the second quarter. A big triple by Clark ignited a 10-1 run in which he had 7 points to get the crowd involved at 31-26. Zadar struggled to find the way to the basket until Boisa stepped up with consecutive layups. Miles shined with a layup off an Aris timeout and soon added free throws for a 35-30 lead. Stipcevic sank a three-pointer but Miles sank more foul shots and Gaios Skordilis followed a dunk with a put-back basket to fix the halftime score at 41-33.

Zadar improved its defense immediately after the break. Meanwhile, a jumper by Car ignited an 0-8 run in which Boisa had 4 points, including a jumper that tied it at 41-41. Betts stepped up with a layup and Clark added a three-point play to give Aris some fresh air at 46-41. Aris kept excelling in defense, with great intensity, while back-to-back three-pointers by Richardon boosted his team's lead to 53-42. Zadar tried to get its frontcourt involved without much success. A three-point play by Dragan Labovic and back-to-back triples by Hatzivrettas - the second one was an incredible, off-balance buzzer-beater - gave Aris a 62-48 lead after 30 minutes. Zadar needed a quick comeback to return to the game and Peric tried to ignite it with a free throw and a power layup. Richardson scored again and Miles downed a triple for a 67-51 Aris lead. Peric kept trying and found some help from Boisa and Rancic to give Zadar some hope, 69-59, with 4 minutes left. Rancic and a three-point play by Ruzic got Zadar even closer, 70-67, with 1:45 left. Aris kept struggling to score but Dikoudis drew a key offensive foul on Peric. Free throws by Hatzivrettas and Miles allowed Aris to celebrate an important win.

Head Coaches

KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Aris BSA 2003
"We accomplished our first goal in the Eurocup, which was the qualification to the Last 16. We had the opportunity to win by a wider margin, but Zadar is a team which insists and fights until the very end. In the second and third quarter we were good in defense and built an important score difference, but in the fourth quarter our attack didn’t work well. We lost too many defensive rebounds, 16 in total, giving Zadar the chance to have a lot of second attacks. Paunic and Labovic had a good debut. I’m pleased with their performance and so are they. Seeing them celebrate in the dressing room, as if they were members of this team since the start of the season, was a very pleasant image. I really don’t see that much difference between ending up 1st or 2nd in the group, but we will definitely go for the victory in Israel."
SAGADIN, ZMAGOSLAV
KK Zadar
"I can’t say that we didn’t do our maximum effort. However, it wasn’t enough. We were decent in defense, but we had a scoring problem. We missed some 7-8 layups and also missed too many free throws. We could have scored 75 or 80 points, but we threw it away. We were amazing in the rebounds and especially in the offensive rebounds, but this wasn’t enough to make us win. I think that 2-3 of our younger players were affected by the atmosphere in the gym and didn’t play as good as they can. These fans are really rewarding. They support their team in a correct way and they truly are the sixth player for Aris."
