THE TAKE

Real Madrid looks to stay on pace in Group F when it hosts Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday at the Palacio Vistalegre in the Spanish capital. Madrid is coming off a hard-fought Top 16-opening victory over Zalgiris, while the seemingly always-injured Reds lost their Euroleague debut under new coach Panagiotis Giannakis at home to Maccabi. Both teams are sure to feel pressure in this crucial encounter: Madrid can ill-afford a home loss as it eyes a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs and the Final Four, which will be held this season under its nose in Madrid. The Spanish champs got solid performances from four of their big name players in the 88-85 win over Zalgiris, as Louis Bullock and Charles Smith provided points, Felipe Reyes was solid in the paint and Raul Lopez was productive at the point guard spot. Moreover, veteran small forward Alex Mumbru had another effective game as the team won despite missing center Lazaros Papadopoulos through injury. Meanwhile Olympiacos lost its fourth straight game last week dating back to the regular season and continues to miss star guard Arvydas Macijauskas, who has played only one game this calendar year. Against Maccabi, Lynn Greer was on fire going for 26 points and 5 assists, which helped earn him Top 16, Week 1 MVP honors, but it wasn’t enough as the team shot a below-average 26.6% from downtown. To have a chance in Madrid, the Reds will need to get better showings from center Marc Jackson and forwards Ioannis Bourousis, Kostas Vasiliadis and Qyntel Woods and backcourt help from Milos Teodosic and Rod Blakney. Under Giannakis, Olympiacos has put more effort into defense both in the Euroleague and Greek League and against a strong defensive team like Madrid, that could turn this battle into a physical and low-scoring encounter. In that case, the keys to victory could come from guards aho can create points for themselves as well as others, making Bullocka nd Greer potential keys to victory. If either of those two can have a big night and his teammates do the job defensively, we may know the outcome of the winner sooner than expected. However all signs point to Madrid as the favorite, being that it is also undefeated at home this season and has won six in a row. Nevertheless, this still should be one more tough game that last 40 exciting minutes where no result can really be a surprise.

Quotes Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"The win over Olympiacos would be a great step torwards getting the first place in our group. Our goal must be to keep on being self-demanding and only that way we will be able to reach the Final Four. We play at home and that is important. Last year we decided to be strong at home, whatever was the competition we played in and we managed to do that so far. We must follow this path not to let games escape from our hands. The crowd will play a pivotal role in this strategy because they always help us to overcome any obstacles we find in tough games. Thursday won't be an exception and I hope they are on our side to help us defeat and great rival like Olympiacos, who will now have to win two road games if they want to qualify. Madrid is their first chance to do that so I am sure they will give their maximum to win."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"We are facing one of the most ambitious teams of the Euroleague and we are working hard in order to improve our performance in comparison to the two previous games against Maccabi Tel Aviv and Panathinaikos. We have to control the tempo of the game and be really competitive to fulfill our goal, which is to beat Real Madrid. We know our mission is difficult, but anywhere we compete, our goal is to win, no matter who the opponents are."

Players

TUNCERI, KEREM
Real Madrid
"Olympiacos is a very dangerous team with good players. It's true that they have lost some games unexpectedly but that doesn't mean they are going through a crisis. They still have options to qualify and most of them depend of them winning this game. That's why we will have to be extra careful with them. The Greek team will arrive to take the win and we will have to be ready to face a tough game. We play in Vistalegre and we have to keep being strong at home because this win is vital for our team. To take the win we mst not give anything away on defense as Olympiacos' offensive talent is widely known."
BLAKNEY, RODERICK
Olympiacos
"The game in Madrid will be tough. We are going there after two bad results, but with determination to fight hard and try to win the battle. Real Madrid is an excellent team, and if we want to beat them on the road, we have to be effective defensively, control the rhythm of the game and run the plays we have worked with the highest concentration."
Alex Mumbru - Real Madrid Real Madrid became the exclusive leader atop Group F by downing Olympiacos 80-70 in the Spanish capital on Thursday night. Madrid registered its second home win in as many games in the Top 16 and is the only unbeaten team in Group F. Meanwhile, Olympiacos dropped to 0-2 and needs to start winning right away to keep its Quarterfinal Playoffs chances alive. Alex Mumbru led the winners with 16 points. Louis Bullock added 14 and Charles Smith had 13 for Madrid, whose playmaker Kerem Tunceri left the game with a knee injury. Lynn Greer had 15 points for Olympiacos, Qyntel Woods and Marc Jackson added 11 each and Panos Vasilopoulos got 10 for the Reds. Three-pointers by Bullock, Tunceri and Mumbru fueled a 18-4 opening run that put Madrid ahead for good. Greer and Woods brought Olympiacos back in the game, 38-33, but Mumbru and Tunceri allowed Madrid to get a 45-35 halftime margin. Olympiacos improved its defense in the second half and Greer and Jackson brought the Reds within 72-67 with two minutes to go. However Bullock followed free throws with a huge triple that allowed Madrid to seal the outcome down the stretch.

Bullock got Madrid going with a three-pointer coming off a screen and Kerem Tunceri added an eight-meter bomb for a 6-0 Madrid lead. Olympiacos went scoreless in the opening two minutes, not finding any easy shots. Meanwhile, Mumbru joined the three-point shootout. Woods stepped up with a six-meter shot, but a free throw by Blagota Sekulic and a layup-plus-foul by Mumbru gave Madrid its first double-digit lead. The Reds even missed free throws now, while Sekulic scored again to make head coach Panagiotis Yannakis call timeout at 15-2. Vasilopoulos tried to change things for the visitors with a driving layup, but a red-hot Mumbru answered from downtown to make it a 14-point game. Vasilopoulos continued to pace the Reds with a three-point play, as Madrid started to miss open shots. Greer fed Jackson for an easy basket to bring Olympiacos within 18-9. Iker Iturbe fired in his trademark three-pointer, but Greer and Rod Blakney kept Olympiacos within 22-12. Michalis Pelekanos also struck from downtown – the fifth Madrid player to do so in the period – before Jake Tsakalidis and Felipe Reyes traded baskets to fix the score at 27-14 after 10 minutes.

Lynn Greer and Charles Smith - Olympiacos - Real MadridSmith shined with a driving basket early in the second quarter that Tsakalidis erased with foul shots. Milos Teodosic finished a three-chance Olympiacos offense with a triple from the corner, but Madrid did not panic. Smith downed free throws and even when Loukas Mavrokefalidis scored at the other end, he answered with a big triple for a 34-21 Madrid edge. Reinaldas Seibutis stepped on court for the first time in this Euroleague season, but the Reds kept struggling in defense. Pelekanos scored in penetration, but Jackson quickly answered with an easy layup while Vasilopoulos added a fast-break basket to bring the Reds within 36-25. Reyes banked in a mid-range shot, but Greer and Woods buried one apiece from downtown to keep Olympiacos in the game, 38-31. Madrid called timeout but a driving layup by Woods got the Reds even closer. Mumbru swished a stop-and-pop jumper, but the Reds were a different team now. Mavrokefalidis took over with a tip-in that Sekulic matched with an acrobatic basket. However Tunceri nailed a wide-open triple to restore a double-digit lead for Madrid, 45-35, at halftime.

Olympiacos improved its defense after the break and Woods stepped up with a layup. The game soon turned into a physical, intense battle as Blakney hit a free throw to get the Reds within 45-38. Madrid went scoreless for almost three minutes, as the hosts could not match Olympiacos's intensity. Reyes shined with a floating jumper that Tsakalidis erased with a put-back. Smith fed Reyes for an easy basket and soon struck from downtown, as Madrid opted to attack the basket to get their big men involved. Vasilopoulos nailed a three-pointer, but Tunceri copied him to restore a 55-43 Madrid lead. Smith took over with another triple that made it a 15-point game midway through the period. Olympiacos called timeout and Jackson checked back in the game with a layup. Tunceri left the game with a knee injury, but Mumbru made free throws to keep Madrid way ahead, 60-45. The Reds tried to have more patience in offense and to get Jackson involved, who made 3-of-4 foul shots. Greer followed free throws with a buzzer-beating jumper to give Olympiacos some hope, 62-53, after 30 minutes.

Charles Smith - Real MadridThe Reds needed a quick comeback to keep their chances alive, but even when their defense was even tougher, Olympiacos did not find good options at the other end. As such, both teams went scoreless for more than two minutes until Mavrokefalidis hit a close jumper. Raul Lopez stepped up with a key three-pointer that restored a double-digit Madrid lead, 65-55. Greer shined with a wild reverse layup but Bullock drew a foul and made 3 of 3 free throws to make it an 11-point game. Woods scored around the basket, but a red-hot Bullock answered with a triple that almost sealed the outcome, 71-59. Vasilopoulos sank a corner three-pointer and Teodosic scored off a steal to get the Reds within 71-63. By the time Greer scored in transition, Olympiacos was back in the game, 71-65. Bullock followed free throws with an unbelievable three-pointer to seal the outcome, 77-67, with less than teo minutes to go. Olympiacos kept trying, but Madrid has already pleased its fans with its second home win in this year's Top 16.

Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"First of all, I must thank our fans for their big support tonight. It was a very tough game as even when we had a strong start in offense, they managed to get back in the game. The key to our win was our intensity in defense, with Axel Hervelle and Blagota Sekulic guarding Marc Jackson. I am happy with our 2-0 record and now it is time to win a game on the road. We did nothing yet and have to stay focused. I liked Olympiacos tonight, if it keeps playing this way it can go deep in the competition."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"First of all, I must congratulate Real Madrid for its great game. It was a tough, exciting game in which their defense was the key factor. Another big key was our poor defensive rebounds, which allowed Real Madrid to power the offensive boards and get a lot of second-chance points. I am happy with the attitude my team had tonight, as it allowed us to stay in the game until the final minutes. I am satisfied in general terms. I am sure that we will make it to the next round if we keep playing this way."

Players

REYES, FELIPE
Real Madrid
"It was an important win for us. We had to work hard in the low post and managed to forget about the toughness they used, focusing on the game. We lead our Top 16 group and that is the most important thing. It is also important that we haven't lost a home game in the competition. Now we must win on the road and even when Maccabi lost tonight, we cannot think that we did our job already."
SMITH, CHARLES
Real Madrid
"We played a good game tonight. We managed to be tough and had a really strong in offense. We managed to complement it with good defense, too. It is important to win games like this, especially this one, as it allows us to lead our Top 16 group. Even when we don't have our full roster available, we showed we can beat anyone if we play together. Now we must focused on the next game against Maccabi."
GREER, LYNN
Olympiacos
"It was a very tough game. I am worried because we must improve on the road if we want to make it to the next round. Our main deficit tonight were defensive rebounds. Madrid is a very tough team to beat, very strong in defense. I must admit it will be difficult to make it to the playoff but we will keep fighting until we run out of the chances. I am not happy with my game, because I am never happy when my team loses."
