Khimki rolls in Gran Canaria

Khimki Moscow Region snapped its three-game road losing streak in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague by overwhelming Herbalife Gran Canaria 70-99 on Thursday. Both teams now have 6-10 records and sit two wins outside of the playoff zone. Dee Bost led the winners with 20 points. Charles Jenkins added 18, Jordan Mickey had 16 and Garlon Green 11 for Khimki. Marcus Eriksson paced Gran Canaria with 14 points, D.J. Strawberry added 13 and Siim-Sander Vene 12 for the hosts.

Strawberry got Gran Canaria going with a floater and free throws. Kim Tillie soon added a triple for a 7-2 lead. Sergey Monia answered from downtown, but a layup by Ondrej Balvin and a fast break slam by Xavi Rabaseda boosted the hosts' lead to 11-5. Jenkins and Monia each hit a three-pointer, but a red-hot Tillie struck twice from beyond the arc and Strawberry soon added another to make it a double-digit game, 22-12. Monia scored again and Malcolm Thomas added a three-point play before a triple by Jenkins gave Khimki hope at 25-20. Jenkins insisted from downtown, but Vene made free throws and Josh Magette hit a nine-meter bomb for a 30-23 Gran Canaria lead after 10 minutes. Stefan Markovic joined the three-point shootout early in the second quarter. Eriksson followed a floater with foul shots, but Bost and Mickey brought Khimki within 34-32. Bost scored again and Jenkins capped a 0-13 run with a bomb from downtown for a 34-39 Khimki lead. Mickey kept pacing the guests and Bost downed a triple that prompted Gran Canaria to call timeout at 36-47. Tony Crocker sank a triple to fix the halftime score at 36-50. Thomas sank a jumper and a three-pointer by Bost capped a mammoth 2-29 run that gave Khimki a 36-55 lead. Eriksson hit a three-pointer, but Bost followed a backdoor layup with a bomb from downtown that broke the game open at 39-62. Eriksson and Oriol Pauli tried to change things for Gran Canaria, forcing the guests to call timeout at 45-62. Jenkins and Bost insisted from downtown, Green found his first points and a dunk by Thomas set a 50-73 Khimki lead after 30 minutes. Mickey stayed on fire early in the fourth quarter and a layup by Jenkins sealed the outcome, 53-81, with 8 minutes left. Nothing changed after that, as Khimki cruised to an impressive road win.

Pivotal performer

Dee Bost shined at the right time, scoring 11 points in the critical run that sealed the outcome. He finished the game with career highs in scoring (20) and performance index rating (20).

Game-changing moment

Gran Canaria led 34-26 midway through the second quarter, but Khimki used a 2-29 run to get full control of the game for good. Bost and Mickey, who had been scoreless until that moment, combined for 17 points in that run. By the time Bost struck from downtown, Khimki led 36-55 early in the second half and it didn't take long for the guests to seal the outcome.

Stellar stat

Khimki made 25 of 36 two-point shots (69.4%), while limiting Gran Canaria to 11 of 23 shots inside the arc (47.8%). Khimki had 29 assists, one shy of the club's EuroLeague record, and committed just 12 turnovers.

Did you notice?

It was Khimki's second trip to Gran Canaria Arena. In 2015, Khimki thrashed Gran Canaria 66-91 in Game 1 of the two-way EuroCup Finals. That was Gran Canaria's biggest home loss in European competition. Khimki came back and broke that record again.

Next game:

Both teams return to Turkish Airlines EuroLeague action on Tuesday; Khimki hosts Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul and Gran Canaria welcomes Real Madrid.

"Congratulations to Khimki, they played a great game. We started the game with good energy and good percentages, especially in the first quarter. They increased their physical level in the second quarter; Khimki is a very physical team and we cannot play at this level. They took a big difference in this second quarter because they scored a lot of threes. In the second half, losing by this difference, we tried to play faster to recover, but we were not at this physical level that you need to compete against these kinds of teams. Sometimes, when your opponent gets a big lead like this in such a short time, you are anxious to cut that deficit. When you play at home, you try to increase the game rhythm to try to erase that deficit, but if you don't hit shots, which is kind of what happened to us in the second quarter, in which we were not shooting the way we did in the first quarter, they get that lead. Khimki has a lot of three-point shooters and it is hard to guard them. We knew how dangerous they were, how much of a threat they were [from three-point territory]. We now have to be able to bounce back so that this loss helps us focus on the next game. Win or lose, there is no time to regret, but to analyze what happened and move on to the next one."

"First of all, I would like to congratulate our team. We made a really solid game for 30 minutes, after the first quarter. We allowed Gran Canaria to score 30 points in the first quarter and just 6 in the second quarter - a completely different approach defensively. We found our rhythm from our defense. We have creativity and had 19 assists in the first half, 29 overall. We played together and found a lot of open looks, then we dominated the game, so I would like to give credit to our team and basically to our front office, the organization of this team. For us, it was very important to come one day earlier - not yesterday, but the day before yesterday. We had time to recover from the huge trip - we are talking about a long trip from Moscow to Gran Canaria, with the time difference and 30 degrees. We needed one more day to adjust to these new circumstances. Congratulations one more time. Now we need to keep going with the same attitude, one game at a time. We have a really difficult schedule and are missing Alexey Shved and Anthony Gill a lot. We need to survive without them, getting as many wins as we can. We are expecting them. Good luck to Gran Canaria in the upcoming games."

"It was a very difficult game. We couldn’t defend their open shots and we have to improve that. We saw that we were down in the scoreboard and we didn’t make our shots to return to the game. "
JENKINS, CHARLES
Khimki Moscow Region
"It is important for us to start the new year this way; to come here and play the way we did is a step in the right direction. This is a special treat for us. We got our chance to bring our families on the flight with us and have them in our hotel and be around for this game. I just want to thank them for joining us and giving us the best support even though their seats were a little bit high in the gym. We really appreciate them and thank them for coming along, and for their support."
BOST, DEE
Khimki Moscow Region
"We started off slow, but picked it up in the second quarter. We knew they are a good team, especially at home, and we just had to turn our defense up a little bit more."
