The Take

Two teams on either edge of the playoff zone meet in a crucial encounter on Friday when Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul hosts Unics Kazan. After winning its last three home games, Darussafaka is 9-8 and tied with Crvena Zvezda for seventh place, while Unics, which has won four of its last five games, is in 10th place at 7-10. Darussafaka recorded an 87-94 road win in Kazan when these teams met in Round 3, which was the first ever game between the clubs. Brad Wanamaker shined with 22 points and 7 assists to lead the winners. Unics may be short-handed in this game with playmaker Quino Colom (11.1 ppg., 5.4 apg.) hurt, so even more may be asked of this season’s scoring leader, Keith Langford (24 ppg., 4 apg.) and reserve point guard Paul Stoll. Darussafaka will counter with Wanamaker (14.3 ppg, 4.2 apg., 1.5 spg.), Scottie Wilbekin (12.1 ppg., 3.6 apg., 1.6 spg.) and Dairis Bertans, who is coming off the best game of his career. Inside, Ante Zizic and Semih Erden will be among the big bodies Darussafaka coach David Blatt uses to slow down Art Parakhouski (11.4 ppg., 1.5 bpg.). Darussafaka generates a lot of offense through swingmen Will Clyburn (13.7 ppg.) and James Anderson (10.5 ppg.), whom Coty Clarke and Kostas Kaimakoglou will be asked to stop. Though Unics is 2-8 on the road this season, one of those wins came in Istanbul against Fenerbahce, so it’s clear that Coach Pashutin’s men won’t be intimidated, which could set this up to be an exciting 40 minutes.

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
"Darussafaka is a team with character. The team of David Blatt plays well at home, Darius Bertans scores with high percentages, James Anderson and Will Clyburn are very aggressive. Many teams have aggressive guards who shoot well. That's why we need to defend well. Playing away you should control the game. Darussafaka plays fast and aggressively, scores 90-100 points. Our task to minimize their points, in offense to find the keys to the defense, to move the ball even if it will be tough basketball. Not to lose the head, to play to win."

Players

JOHNSON, ORLANDO
