The Take

Two Spanish powerhouses will clash on Wednesday in Round 18 when Real Madrid (11-6) welcomes Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz (8-9). This will be their sixth EuroLeague meeting ever, with Baskonia having won four of the previous five. In their last duel, the Basque team dominated at home in Round 7, 105-75, behind 15 points by Rodrigue Beaubois. Madrid is currently riding a six-game winning streak despite important injuries. Los Blancos look to whiz kid Luka Doncic (17.6 ppg., 4.7 apg.), who gets help from Trey Thompkins (9.9 ppg.) and captain Felipe Reyes (8.8 ppg.). Center Walter Tavares has also been a big factor recently. Baskonia, which lost Jordan McRae to a shoulder injury for the season, relies on Toko Shengelia (14.9 ppg., 5.9 rpg.), Beaubois (12.1 ppg.) and Jayson Granger (8.9 ppg., 5.6 apg.). These two teams are among the top three scorers in the league, so expect fireworks at WiZink Center. Baskonia generally shoots better than Los Blancos, but the latter control rebounds, assists and steals on the floor. The hosts are on a roll and will have the support of the fans, plus a desire for revenge from the first game, but Baskonia comes fresh from a win against Olympiacos Piraeus so, with the morale through the roof, they will look to complete another strong game against one of the teams at the top of the standings.

Head Coaches

LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"All 13 players are available, we didn't have any problems. Against Baskonia they blasted us in the first game, we didn't have any answers. With this schdule we have, we cannot focus on a single game. We have to expect the best Baskonia, who is a great team. We play two games this week and if we want to win we will have to do many things well."
MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz
"We not have much time in between games and we have to prepare them as best as we can. The main thing is to see what we have to improve. Madrid is now in a great dynamic, so I am sure the first game we had this season in the EuroLeague won't be happening again. We all know their strong points, but we also know ours and we will try to counter them. Real Madrid is a quality team and you have to do things well for them not to annihilate you like they do with many teams. I hope we can offer our best version in this game."

Players

THOMPKINS, TREY
Real Madrid
"We are ready for Baskonia. We had some rest and then some time to work. We know it will be a war, so we have to be prepared. They have a lot of weapons, they play well together. They play fast and strong. We'll have to defend in the paint and make them take tough shots."
