The Take

Two teams with very different momentums meet again. It will be a special game for Fenerbahce head coach Zeljko Obradovic, who faces the team in which he cemented his own legend. Obradovic won five of his eight Euroleague titles – an all-time record – with the Greens and had 13 successful seasons with Panathinaikos. Three Panathinaikos players - Mike Batiste, Roko Ukic and James Gist - play against their former team, too. Obradovic will be focused on slowing Dimitris Diamantidis, who is posting career-high assists numbers (7.8 apg.) this year. Bo McCalebb and Kenan Sipahi face the challenge of guarding him. Fenerbahce relies on its many talents at both wings – Emir Preldzic, Bojan Bogdanovic, Nemanja Bjelica and bomber Melih Mahmutoglu – to make the difference against Ramel Curry, Mike Bramos and Jonas Maciulis. Panathinaikos has a more physical frontcourt led by Stephane Lasme, James Gist, Batiste and Fotsis. Fenerbahce needs Gasper Vidmar, Linas Kleiza and Luka Zoric to box out and play physical, in one of the biggest keys to this exciting game.

Game Notes

Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
Zeljko Obradovic cemented his status as a coaching legend during his 13 seasons with Panathinaikos. During that time he led the Greens to five Euroleague titles, 11 Greek League championships and seven Greek Cups. He enjoyed much of that success with current Panathinaikos players Mike Batiste, Dimitris Diamantidis and Antonis Fotsis.
Obradovic has used 10 different players in his team’s starting lineups this season. Gasper Vidmar is the only Fenerbahce Ulker player to have started every Euroleague game this season.
Bojan Bogdanovic was the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season scoring champ with 18.1 points per game. He has scored in double figures in all but two games this season.
Bogdanovic has hit a shooting slump recently; he is 0 for 12 from downtown in the Top 16 after making 40.9% of his threes in the regular season.
Luka Zoric and Bojan Bogdanovic have teamed with Panathinaikos guard Roko Ukic in recent summers on the Croatian national team – most recently at EuroBasket 2013, in which they helped Croatia reach the semifinals.
Linas Kleiza was a teammate of Panathinaikos center Loukas Mavrokefalidis at Olympiacos during the 2009-10 season. They helped the Reds reach the Euroleague title game and win the Greek Cup that season.
Melih Mahmutoglu set a Euroleague career-high in scoring with 19 points against Unicaja Malaga last week by going 5 for 5 from behind the three-point line.

Panathinaikos Athens
Head coach Argiris Pedoulakis has used 11 different players in the starting lineup so far this season. Only James Gist has started every Euroleague game.
Dimitris Diamantidis leads the Turkish Airlines Euroleague this season with 7.9 assists per game, which is also the best mark of his distinguished career.
Panathinaikos leads the competition in steals, with 8.2 per game. Diamantidis has recorded at least 1 steal in 10 consecutive games.
Stephane Lasme leads the Turkish Airlines Euroleague in fouls committed this season with 48 (4 fouls per game).
Roko Ukic played two and a half seasons for Fenerbahce Ulker between 2010 and 2012. He helped the club win a pair of Turkish League championships and two Turkish Cups in his time there.
James Gist spent the 2011-12 season alongside Ukic at Fenerbahce Ulker. They played alongside current Fener players Bojan Bogdanovic, Omer Onan, Emir Preldzic, Oguz Savas and Gasper Vidmar.
Mike Batiste played for Fenerbahce Ulker last season and was a teammate of more than half the team’s current roster.
Jonas Maciulis and Fenerbahce Ulker forward Linas Kleiza have been teammates throughout the years on Lithuania’s junior and senior national teams. They medaled together twice at the European championships – including the silver this past summer , teamed up at the Olympics and led Lithuania to a silver medal at the 2003 Under-18 World Championships.
Ramel Curry has made at least 1 three-pointer in six consecutive Euroleague games. He is shooting 12 for 19 from downtown (63.1%) over that stretch.

Quotes Head Coaches

Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"The game against Panathinaikos arrives in a difficult moment for us. First of all because they have been playing excellent lately, they are a very good team especially in defense. It's obvious that after the start with three losses we have to step up and play a pretty good game. If we want to retain our options in the Top 16 we must win. I hope everyone understands the situation and, of course, the fans come to the arena to support the team."
Panathinaikos Athens
"Fenerbahce Ulker is a really talented team offensively and this reflects to the numbers this team carries throughout Euroleague this year. They get more aggressive when they play at home. They have patience, they read every single mis-match in the game and I expect this to be a really tough encounter for both teams. We really don't think about the standing right now. Our philosophy is to focus to the next game. The one thing that troubles us is that we had three tough games in six days and that we are going to play on Thursday with just one practice. It's not the first time to deal with a situation like this. We have to find our energy stepping on the court. This is what we want."

Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"I am very excited because it is a very important game for us. Should be a good one. We hope to be back on the winningtrack soon because we need it."
Panathinaikos Athens
"It's going to be very important for us to continue to play the way we are playing as a team. Fenerbahce Ulker is a very talented team, with a great coach and despite what their record is, or what our record is, we need to focus on the game plan if we want to go there and win. We don't feel pressure for a simple reason: At this level every team is very talented and anyone can win any given night. Regardless of the record you are in, you can win by 20 or lose by 20, you can win by 2 and vice versa. The only thing we can do is to be focused and to have the determination to get the win."

Obradovic's Fenerbahce Ulker edges Panathinaikos

After dominating early, Fenerbahce Ulker held on late to edge Panathinaikos Athens 77-72 for the club’s first Top 16 victory. Linas Kleiza made a pair of big shots in the final minute to help seal the win for Coach Zeljko Obradovic's side, which handed Panathinaikos its first Top 16 loss. It was all Fenerbahce until Loukas Mavrokefalidis scored all the points in a 0-9 run to bring Panathinaikos back. Dimitris Diamantidis threes in the fourth helped complete the comeback and set up a thrilling finish that featured four lead changes and three ties in the final six minutes until Kleiza put the game away. Bojan Bogdanovic paced the winners with 15 points, Nemanja Bjelica and Kleiza added 13 apiece, Emir Preldzic scored 12 and Bo McCalebb 10. Ramel Curry led Panathinaikos with 14 points, Mavrokefalidis finished with 11 and Diamantidis tallied 9 points and 8 assists in defeat.

First quarter: Preldzic, McCalebb propel hosts to early lead

After several missed jumpers on both ends, Luka Zoric for the hosts and James Gist for the visitors opened the scoring with free throws. Preldzic dropped in a runner for the game’s first basket and his triple from the top of the key soon made it 6-4. Bjelica with a layup and free throws helped extend the gap to 6 midway through the quarter. Jonas Maciulis narrowed the difference to 12-8. McCalebb took center stage with a pair of layups – the second after an offensive rebound and drive to the hoop – as the hosts doubled up the visitors, 16-8. A timeout did not change the momentum as Preldzic drained a three from the corner. After seven missed Panathinaikos threes, Diamantidis finally sank one. Bogdanovic missed a pair of free throws, but Kleiza’s offensive rebound led to a McCalebb layup. The diminutive playmaker then made 2 free throws to give the hosts a 23-11 lead through 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Strong defense keeps Fenerbahce in control

Curry came in and drained a three for the Greens. Gasper Vidmar rejected Gist at the rim and Bogdanovic returned to form with 2 free throws. Gist scored on the offensive glass, but Preldzic answered quickly to make it 27-16. Vidmar recorded a second block on Gist as the Fenerbahce defense proved tough. Even after Maciulis stepped up with a three, Omer Onan responded in kind. Preldzic thrilled the crowd with a halfcourt assist to Kleiza for a 13-point edge. Baskets by Mike Batiste and Curry gave Panathinaikos hope. The big man missed a chance to cut further into the deficit when he missed 3 free throws, but Curry sank a three to bring the Greens within 34-26, which prompted a Fenerbahce timeout. Bjelica sank a triple, but Batiste banked in a jumper. A Bogdanovic jumper and Bjelica block at the buzzer protected a 39-28 halftime lead.

Third quarter: Mavrokefalidis singlehandedly restores Greens’ hope

Bogdanovic kept the crowd involved with a steal and slam and a short jumper, though Maciulis scored in between. Free throws by Curry and Lasme brought Panathinaikos within 10. Bogdanovic remained strong with the next 4 points to make it 47-33. Curry scored on the break, but Bjelica kept the big margin for the home side. Mavrokefalidis came off the bench and took charge for the visitors. He scored on four of the next five Panathinaikos possessions – drawing fouls on three of them – to score all the points in a 0-9 run that carried his team within 49-44. Vidmar ended Fenerbahce’s drought after two minutes and Kleiza added free throws. Roko Ukic’s layup in traffic and an incredible follow-slam by Gist kept the visitors alive. After free throws by Mavrokefalidis and Bogdanovic, the hosts led 56-50.

Fourth quarter: Multiple lead changes, ties, set up fantastic finish

Kleiza netted the first basket of the fourth quarter, but a Diamantidis three kept the Greens within 5. Diamantidis and Lasme got together on a highlight-film alley-oop to make it a 3-point game. Diamantidis’s third three of the night tied the game for the first time since the opening minutes, 58-58. Kleiza got to the line to restore a Fenerbahce edge, but a Mike Bramos triple put Panathinaikos ahead 60-61. The lead changed hands on a McCalebb jumper and another Bramos three. Bjelica tied the game at 64-64 with three minutes remaining. Antonis Fotsis fired in his first three; Onan matched him. Lasme took a seat with 5 fouls and Onan put the hosts ahead, 68-67, on the resulting free throws. After Fotsis missed a tough three, Kleiza sank a clutch triple with a minute to go. After a timeout, Curry darted for a layup to make it 71-69. However Kleiza sank a killer jumper, Diamantidis missed a three and Bogdanovic eyed an open Zoric for a slam to lock up the victory.

Head Coaches

Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"We won a very tough and important game tonight. Panathinaikos showed its quality in the last quarter. We were the better side in the first half. Especially in defense we did well. We were also good on offense in some moments. But our main problem was our turnovers, especially in the critical moments. Our opponent is experienced enough to use those mistakes. I want to congratulate my players for their great effort and important win. Physiologically it was also a very important win for us. We will try to keep on fighting in the last 10 games. But the main thing is that we have to put our hearts on the court. It was also tough for myself to play against my ex team. It was strange to see Diamantidis and Fotsis on the other side. They are in my heart. But I’m at Fenerbahce Ulker right now and I will keep on fighting for my team until the end."
Panathinaikos Athens
"It was a very tough game like all we expected. Fenerbahce Ulker started the game with high motivation and was very tough. It was kind of a surprise for us. We couldn’t concentrate enough. We made so many easy mistakes. Their guards hustled us really hard. They were pretty good in offensive rebounding. We balanced the game in the second half. We also levelled the score and moved in front. But in the end we couldn’t make the last move to win."

Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"It’s a great victory for us. We felt big pressure on us. That’s the reason for our mistakes in the critical moments. But we stayed focused in the game until the end. I’m also happy to help the team. I believe with all my heart that we will play much better in the next games."
Panathinaikos Athens
"We made a great comeback in the game in the second half. We came close to winning the game. We did everything to do it, but they made some big shots that we couldn’t answer in the end. "
