The Take

A duel between classic EuroLeague teams will be taking place on Thursday night when CSKA Moscow (16-6) welcomes Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv (8-14) to the Russian capital. These two classic powerhouses have faced each other 20 times this century, with CSKA having won 14 of those enocunters. The last time they met in Round 13, CSKA escaped Tel Aviv with a 76-80 win as Kyle Hines secured the wins for the guests in the last seconds. Cory Higgins led the winners that night with 16 points while Andrew Goudelock had 19 for Maccabi. The two teams are in different positions at the moment, with CSKA second in the standings but having faltered a bit in the last weeks, it finds a Maccabi that has won two of its last three games and seems to be going back to its usual self after a pretty rough first half of the season, so expect a more balanced duel than each team's records might suggest. The hosts, of course, are led by MVP Nando De Colo (19.5 ppg. and 3.7 apg.) and Milos Teodosic (16.8 ppg. plus 7.4 apg. to lead the league) from the backcourt, and then also helped by Higgins (9.7 ppg.). For Maccabi, Goudelock is the main referent (17.3 ppg. and 2.9 apg.), followed by Devin Smith (9.7 ppg. and 5.7 rpg.) and Victor Rudd (8.4 ppg. and 4.5 rpg.). CSKA boasts the best offense in the competition (87.6 ppg.) and also has slightly better defensive numbers than Maccabi (80.3 ppg. vs. 83.2 ppg.), but again, the guests seem to be leaving the bumpy road behind so these figures should not be counted on. Maccabi is the sixth best team under the glass (34.3 rpg.) but CSKA is ahead on every other major category, leading the league in 2-point (56.0%), 3-point (41.6%) and free throw shooting (81.5%) while also being second in assists (20.0 apg.). The defending champs have everything in their favor also playing at home, but Maccabi wants to make up for wasted time and is improving team chemistry week after week, so expect a contested showdown in Moscow on Thursday.
