The Take

Bamberg will try to remain unbeaten at home in the Top 16 while defending champion Real Madrid comes off its first road win of this phase and wants to keep its momentum going after lifting the Spanish Copa del Rey trophy over the weekend. Bamberg is 6-1 at home so far this season and has held opponents to 62.3 points in its last three home games. Stopping Sergio Rodriguez and Sergio Llull will be critical for the hosts, but Bamberg relies in its own point guards - Bradley Wanamaker, Nikos Zisis and Janis Strelnieks - to do so. In the teams' showdown in Top 16 Round 1, Rodriguez scored all of his 22 points after halftime, including a three-pointer with 20.7 seconds left to break a 77-77 tie and send his team to an 82-79 win. Bamberg plays twin point guards all game long, but wing players like Patrick Heckmann and Darius Miller are equally important for Coach Andrea Trinchieri. Jaycee Carroll and K.C. Rivers will provide the fireworks from downtown, while Jonas Maciulis and Jeffery Taylor are set for an intriguing matchup against Miller and Heckmann at small forward. Madrid leads the league in assists (20.5 apg.) and is second in scoring (84.7 ppg.). Gustavo Ayon earned Top 16 Round 7 MVP honors, but with Felipe Reyes and Andres Nocioni back in action, he will get plenty of help around the baskets against Nicolo Melli, Leon Radosevic and Elias Harris. Daniel Theis must use his pick-and-roll skills against Augusto Lima and Willy Hernangomez. Just like in his team's road win in Khimki, Trey Thompkins could be Madrid's X-factor in this exciting game.

Quotes Head Coaches

TRINCHIERI, ANDREA
Brose Baskets Bamberg
"Madrid is like Star Wars. They have 14 players that would start in every team in Europe. They have at least four players that can directly play in the NBA. They are the reining champion of the Euroleague. They just won the Spanish Cup. So, we are definitely the underdog. They’re in a very good moment and we have to do our best. And our best means the chance to stay in the game, not the chance to win. If we have one percent of chances to win, I would be happy. But we have to give us the opportunity to play the best game of the season in a very nice place with a sold out arena far from Bamberg. So I believe we should enjoy to play this kind of game."
LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"We are playing an important road game against a great opponent. It will be a tough game. Brose Baskets made it clear from day one that it would compete to the end, as they did in the first game we played each other. They have options to be in the playoffs, because they are having a good Top 16. It is a dangerous team with a good rotation in the paint and players with lots of Euroleague experience like Melli and Zisis. Also, players like Wanamaker and Strelnieks are playing at a good level. Our only absence is Rudy. He is moving better but he cannot play yet. W want him to get into the rhythm setp by step, and let's hope he can be with the group again next week. We don't want to risk it and he will be back when he is at 100 percent. Fortunately, we have a deep roster that allows us to have many rotations. Augusto Lima's adaptation is being good. He is assimilating the concepts of the team and he has integrated into the group seamlessly."

"Real Madrid is definitely one of the best teams in Europe. In the last game against us they missed a few people. So, now, they’re much stronger. But we play at home this time, so I think it will be a very interesting game. Of course we are the underdog. We have to prepare as good as possible, go out and do our best. We expect that our fans will give us a lot of support and energy. It will be fun."
AYON, GUSTAVO
Real Madrid
"The Cup celebrations didn't last long because we have a tough game ahead of us against Brose Baskets, a strong opponent that almost beat us in Madrid and who we could only defeat in the final minutes thanks to great shooting accuracy. We must be focused to prepare this game. I think we have options to win the game, but it will be complicated. It's important to win on the road, even more so with how demanding our group is. I feel well and I work my hardest to be in the best possible shape to help the team."

Ayon, Reyes step up late as Madrid edges Bamberg

Felipe Reyes scored the game’s last 4 points and Gustavo Ayon recorded a key block of Brose Baskets Bamberg point guard Bradley Wanamaker with 12 seconds left as defending champion Real Madrid edged the German champs 86-90 in a thriller at Nuremberg Arena. The game featured four lead changes and three ties in the fourth quarter alone and was tied with 69 seconds left when Reyes hit go-ahead free throws for Madrid. After Ayon stopped Wanamaker, Reyes iced the game from the line. Sergio Llull paced the winners with 21 points on 6-of-7 three-point shooting. Reyes scored 18 points, Ayon posted 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, Augusto Lima debuted with 10 points and Sergio Rodriguez dished 10 assists. Darius Miller paced Bamberg with 20 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown. Wanamaker scored 16, Janis Strelniks tallied 11 points and 4 steals, Leon Radosevic also scored 11 and Nicolo Melli added 10 points. The hosts took charge with the game’s first 12 points, but Llull heated up from downtown and Reyes got going too as the visitors closed to within 26-23 after 10 minutes. Rodriguez took over for Los Blancos in the second quarter with a series of assists to newcomer Lima and a fantastic alley-oop to Jeffrey Taylor at the buzzer to make it 45-46 at the break. Madrid led by as many as 10 in the third quarter and 9 in the fourth, but Bamberg rallied behind Miller to take the game down to the wire.

First quarter: Bamberg soars ahead with game’s first 12 points

Bamberg won the opening team and quickly went ahead on a Wanamaker triple. Patrick Heckman drove for a layup and Strelniks buried a three. Nicolo Melli banked in a runner to make it a 10-0 start, after which Coach Pablo Laso called Madrid’s first timeout. Radosevic’s jumper made it that all five Bamberg starters scored before Madrid even got on the board. Llull buried a pair of threes around another Radosevic jumper to make it 14-6. Radosevic’s put-back restored a double-digit lead. Jonas Maciulis nailed a three from the corner and Jaycee Carroll cut the difference to 4 with his first three. Melli drained a triple at the other end and Darius Miller added a jumper to give Bamberg a 21-12 advantage. Reyes split free throws for Madrid’s first point that wasn’t from downtown. After Strelniks and Reyes traded free throws, Zisis set up Miller for a three with a look-away pass. Llull countered with a three. Lima missed twice from the line, but Reyes tipped in the second miss and then nailed a three from the corner to bring Madrid within 26-23 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Rodriguez, Lima lead Madrid rally

Lima scored twice thanks to assists from Rodriguez, but a Melli triple in between kept the hosts on top. After Melli assisted Zisis for a layup, Reyes made it 31-30 with a three. Reyes shined with an assist to Lima for a slam and Madrid’s first lead before nailing his third triple of the game. Rodriguez teamed up with Lima on an alley-oop to cap a 0-10 Madrid run. Wanamaker revived the hosts with a four-point play, but Rodriguez scored on either side of a Zisis layup to keep Madrid in front, 37-41. After a timeout, Radosevic scored inside, but Gustavo Ayon countered with 2 free throws. Wanamaker drove for a layup and Lucca Staiger drilled a long three to put Bamberg back on top, 44-43. Radosevic for the hosts and Andres Nocioni for the visitors each split free throws. Madrid called a timeout with 6 seconds left in the half and drew up a perfect play for Rodriguez to find Taylor with an alley-oop lob that the latter dunked for a 45-46 Madrid edge at the break.

Third quarter: Miller keeps Bamberg in the game

Llull got a shooter’s roll on an off-balance jumper and made the bonus foul shot that came with it. Ayon scored inside before Miller nailed a jumper for Bamberg. However Llull drilled a three to give the visitors a 47-54 advantage. Carroll was next to hit from downtown as Madrid took a 10-point lead. After a Bamberg timeout, back-to-back threes by Miller drew the hosts within 53-37. Maciulis hit a jumper for Madrid, but Miller connected on another three. It was a 1-point game after Wanamaker free throws. After an Ayon tip-in, Miller sank a pull-up jumper. Maciulis drew a foul shooting a three-pointer and made the resulting 3 free throws for a 60-64 lead. Reyes added to the Madrid lead. Strelniks made free throws, but Llull bettered him with a triple to extend the difference to 7. Radosevic made 2 free throws and Daniel Theis added another. Taylor’s basket on the offensive glass and Ayon’s free throw made it 65-72 at the end of the quarter.

Fourth quarter: Reyes, Ayon save Madrid

Rodriguez and Lima connected on another alley-oop to start the quarter. A Theis triple and Strelniks’s steal and layup brought Bamberg within 4. K.C. Rivers sank a high-arching floater, but after a Wanamaker three-pointer and a pair of Strelniks free throws, it was 75-76. Wanamaker buried a jumper to give Bamberg the lead and Madrid promptly called timeout. Ayon blocked Wanamaker inside and Llull knocked down his sixth three to put the champs back ahead. Bamberg called timeout and Zisis buried a three to regain the lead for his side, but Ayon set up Nocioni for a layup-plus-foul to make it 80-82 with five minutes to go. Zisis tied it with a jumper, but Rodriguez’s 10th assist was to Ayon for a slam and a slim lead. Miller made a tough layup to even the score, but Carroll took a bounce pass from Ayon for a layup with two minutes on the clock. Miller turned distributor and set up Melli for a layup to make it 86-86. Reyes converted 2 free throws with 69 seconds remaining. Ayon came up with a huge block on Wanamaker with 12 seconds remaining and Reyes sealed the win from the line.

"The right question would be, at this moment: Could we do better? It was an amazing game in an amazing atmosphere. We fought with all we have. We faced a great team that makes unbelievable baskets. They finished the first half 8 for 11 on threes, with Reyes 3 for 3, Llull 3 for 3. Reyes is usually not a designated shooter for them. We managed to stay in the game, which was very hard, because of frustration. In some moments, you felt we cannot make it. We played with great energy. We made mistakes. We stayed alive. The answer to the question is: Yes, because we can always do better, but I am proud of my team. We lost on little details, wrong execution on defense, wrong positioning. We rushed on offense in the clutch moments, but some games these mistakes come from a lower level of concentration. In other games, these mistakes come because to play at this level costs us so much energy. Really, to stay in this game, my team did the very, very best effort I ever saw. Of course, we are pissed off, sad, but we will not give up. We will try one more time. We already overachieved so far, playing great games, and Real earned the win. They played great and scored big shots. I can ask my team to be better and I will do that, to correct the small mistakes that cost us the game in the clutch moments, but I believe they fought til the very end."
LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
“I think we came back from the beginning of the game where they played with a lot of rhythm and enthusiasm. They were very versatile. I think our rotations gave us a lot of things. Lima, Taylor. So we hung in the game. We made some better moves offensively. We looked for open jumpers. In the second half, we got a goot lead, but we looks a little bit tired, which is normal after the weekend we had. At the end, we controlled the end of the game, we were able to look for good shots, get good defenses, good defensive rebounds. In the end we got a very important victory for us. I think [Ayon’s block on Wanamaker] was a key play in the game. One-on-one, we knew they were hurting us one-on-one. They make great one-on-one plays. Miller was unbelievable, he brought them back in the game. But at the end we were able to contain those one-on-ones and probably we got the game on that last play with Gustavo. I think Bamberg is doing an unbelievable Euroleague. They deserve everything they are getting, because they are playing great, very solid. And we knew how difficult it was going to be to win here. Like I said, we are in a very tough group, we know it’s gonna be day by day and right now we got a very good victory. But we have another game next week. "

"It's a very tough loss against a great opponent. I feel like we came out and played with a lot of intensity and energy. We executed the way we wanted to. They just have a lot of experience, a lot of talent, and they pulled it out in the end."
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
Real Madrid
“We know how difficult it is to play here. We executed great. We got the win, this is the most important thing for us. [Llull] was shooting great. He gave us the advantage in the first quarter when we were a little bit rough. He played great. Everybody is happy. After the [Spanish} Cup we have a lot of confidence. We are on the way to get better. I think the confidence is key for us. We’ve been through a long year, a very difficult year with a lot of injuries. We are now starting to get everybody healthy and starting to get how we did last year. We have lost two games at home. We had to recover some games on the road. This is a tough game. I don’t know how many teams have won here. It’s a tough place to get a win. "
