The Take

Khimki Moscow Region vs Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens preview Two of the premier guards in the league will clash when Khimki Moscow Region (13-9) and Alexey Shved host Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens (14-8) and Nick Calathes. It is also a pivotal duel in the race for home-court advantage with the Greens sitting in fourth place. Panathinaikos dominated Khimki 93-65 when they met in Athens in Round 7 thanks to 24 points on red-hot shooting from Marcus Denmon. Khimki is in top form with four wins in its last five largely thanks to outstanding defense, allowing an average of just 66 points per game in those victories. Alongside Shved (22.0 ppg., 4.5 apg., 1.3 spg.), who leads the league in scoring, James Anderson (10.2 ppg.) and Tyler Honeycutt (9.8 ppg., 5.3 rpg., 1.3 spg.) play big roles for Khimki. Panathinaikos has stuttered recently, losing three consecutive games on the road, but has welcomed back Mike James to add another spark for the remainder of the campaign. H slots in next to Nick Calathes (14.5 ppg., 8.5 apg., 1.7 spg.), Nikos Pappas (10.3 ppg.) and forward James Gist (10.0 ppg.). The teams are quite similar by the numbers and the outcome will likely decided by with teams’ supporting cast rises up.

Head Coaches

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Khimki Moscow Region
"It looks like Panathinaikos is a top four team in the EuroLeague this year. Also, they added two players in Mike James and Adreian Payne. So, they added quality and athleticism, for sure. Right now, they have a deeper roster. First of all, we need to realize what kind of team they have and how we have to play. For me, the basic thing is that Calathes is the best assisting player and point guard in the EuroLeague, having 8.5 assists per game. It looks like he makes everybody involved in the game. Of course, it’s gonna be a specific situation about our defense on him. They have a different type of players; they have everything right now. For us it’s very important, because we’ll play at home and it will be a crucial game for us. We need to play very hard and very well if we want to win."
PASCUAL, XAVI
Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens
"It was good to rest. We had time to practice, which we not always have, so it was good to spend some time together on court. Khimki has a great roster with super players. We have to take care of everything, they play especially well at home. We know they are athletic. They have great shooters, especially Shved, who is also a great creator. We will play one of the best teams in Europe and we have to be careful."

Players

JENKINS, CHARLES
Khimki Moscow Region
"As a team we had a productive practice week and get one more to get prepared for really important game on Friday. They play really well. Of course, we didn’t forget what happened to us when we were there. I think, it’s going to be a motivation for us to prove most ourselves that we are competing with a team like that. I mean, we had success against other EuroLeague teams but going there they really beat us pretty bad. I think, it’s a chance for us to prove to each other that we can play against one of the best teams in the EuroLeague, trying to do the best we can to get a win."
SINGLETON, CHRIS
Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens
"Everybody in the EuroLeague needed this rest so it's been good. I look forward to see how Khimki plays, they are a great team. I think we have a group of excellent players that fits together and I hope the new guys will also gel with us. We have to be ready and stay with the game plan."
