The Take

Two teams in very different situations in Top 16 Group F meet again in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Game of the Week, in which Montepaschi Siena hosts Fenerbahce Ulker on Friday. Montepaschi is second in Group F with a 6-2 record. Fenerbahce ranks seventh at 2-6. Simone Pianigiani, who joined Fenerbahce from Montepaschi last summer, stepped down as head coach of the Turkish powerhouse over the weekend. Montepaschi beat Fenerbahce 92-98 in Top 16 Game 2 led by star guard Bobby Brown, who netted 41 points to tie the Euroleague's all-time single-game scoring record.

Fenerbahce needs to do a better defensive job on Brown if it wants to increase its chances to win the game. Brown, the Euroleague's top scorer this season, has unlimited shooting range, good court vision and outstanding driving skills for a player his size. Brown faces a very interesting matchup against Bo McCalebb, who won the Alphonso Ford Top Scorer trophy with Montepaschi last season; Brown is well on his way to doing the same in 2012-13. Stopping Bojan Bogdanovic will be critical for Montepaschi, as he can make the difference with his all-around scoring skills. Bogdanovic has plenty of help at the wings from Romain Sato, blue-collar veteran Omer Onan, streak shooter Uros Tripkovic and point forward Emir Preldzic, who has been limited lately due to a foot problem. Bogdanovic must try to keep scoring fluently against the tough defenders Siena will send at him, like Daniel Hackett and Marco Carraretto. In a high-profile matchup, Sato faces another tough and experienced small forward, David Moss. Matt Janning can provide the fireworks from downtown and Kristjan Kangur gives Coach Luca Banchi another elite perimeter shooter in the frontcourt. Kangur will split minutes at power forward with rebounding ace Viktor Sanikidze. Benjamin Eze, Benjamin Ortner and Tomas Ress if fully healthy – he dressed but didn't play in Tel Aviv – are Montepaschi's options at center. Eze must be ready for former teammate David Andersen while Sanikidze and Kangur must use their quickness and outside shooting against Mike Batiste. Kaya Peker, Oguz Savas and Ilkan Karaman round out a deep Fenerbahce frontcourt.

Fenerbahce comes off a tough home loss against FC Barcelona Regal and will be really motivated to bounce back from it. Andersen, Sato and McCalebb were Montepaschi stars before joining Fenerbahce and naturally eager to perform well in their former home. The visitors need to stop Brown and prevent Montepaschi from running to increase their chances to win the game. Montepaschi must control the boards and circulate the ball as in every home game until now to get a critical win and get closer to the Euroleague playoffs.

Game Notes

Montepaschi Siena leads the Euroleague in scoring (82.6 ppg.), three-pointers made (200), three-point percentage (41.1%) and free-throw percentage (80.4%) this season and is tied for the lead in free throws made (271).

David Moss and Bobby Brown are the only Montepaschi players to start every Euroleague game this season. In total, Coach Luca Banchi has used 13 different players in the starting lineup this season.

Brown leads the Euroleague in scoring (19.8 ppg.) and is fourth in assists (5.3 apg.).

Brown tied the Euroleague single-game scoring record with 41 points in a win at Fenerbahce Ulker last month. He set the record for most points scored by a visiting player and earned bwin MVP of the week for the third time this season.

Brown has scored at least 10 points in 10 straight and 17 of his last 18 Euroleague games.

Daniel Hackett has made 11 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Aleksandar Rasic has made 9 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Fenerbahce Ulker has lost seven straight Euroleague road games.

Fenerbahce Ulker is ranked last in the league in rebounding (28.8 rpg.).

Bo McCalebb spent the previous two seasons at Montepaschi Siena, during which he helped the club win back-to-back Italian League and Cup doubles and reach the 2011 Euroleague Final Four.

McCalebb has at least 1 steal in nine straight Euroleague games.

McCalebb needs 22 more points to reach 1,000 for his Euroleague career.

Romain Sato spent four seasons between 2006 and 2010 with Montepaschi Siena. During that period he helped the club win four straight Italian League titles, two Italian Cups and reach the 2008 Euroleague Final Four.

David Andersen played two seasons for Montepaschi Siena: 2003-04 and last season. He helped the club win the Italian League in both seasons and reach the 2004 Final Four in Tel Aviv.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored a Euroleague career-high 31 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting last month against Montepaschi Siena.

Bogdanovic has scored in double figures in nine straight Euroleague games. He is the Top 16’s leading scorer with 21.3 points per game.

Mike Batiste has made 10 straight free throws in Euroleague games.

Batiste is 21 points behind former CSKA great J.R. Holden for fifth place on the competition’s career scoring charts. Batiste enters the week with 2,365 career points.

Uros Tripkovic has made his last 14 free throws in Euroleague action.

Tripkovic is 3 three-pointers away from tying former Unicaja teammate Berni Rodriguez for 25th place on the Euroleague’s career list of three-pointers made.

Quotes Head Coaches

Montepaschi Siena
"We will approach the game with Fenerbahce knowing that we will face one of the best teams in Europe, with the talent of many players that know how to approach a game like this and that will try to get a win that could change their way in this Top 16. We will try to play a great game, because this is the only way we have to try to get a win against a strong team such as Fenerbahce."
Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"We are going through a Euroleague Top 16 season where our chances are quite low. We are going to one of the most difficult away games in the Euroleague. Siena is a team which has a strong grounded system and their performance has been rising since the beginning of the season. Only in the last few games they had trouble when they lost to Maccabi, Barcelona and Pesaro in the Italian League. I definitely believe they got their act back together. This is going to be a special game especially for some of our players. We are going to do everything possible in our hands and we are going to play to win. Siena needs this win more than we do so there is going to be lots of pressure on them. We made a few small changes in our system and are going to try to make things better and better. It's going to be a game where every player is going to have a responsibility so everyone should be ready for that. We are two different teams basketball wise and foundation wise. We are going to have some difficulties because Siena is a more undersized team. But in the end we are going to fight and do the best we can."

Montepaschi Siena
"It will be a very important game for us, especially after our last game against Maccabi. Beating Fenerbahce will be a big step for us. We have to focus on the things we can control: we have to play good defense and to take care the ball and then everything is possible."
Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"It will be an interesting game. We are now playing for pride. We now want to play our best game. With what's happening, new coach and everything is changing out here. So things are a little different. It should be fun to play in my old stadium in Siena. It's going to be a bit emotional. But hopefully we can come out and play some good basketball and get a good win on the road which is something we need to do to get back on track."

Montepaschi blows past Fenerbahce Ulker

Montepaschi Siena returned to its winning ways in streaking past Fenerbahce Ulker 87-69 in Group F of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16. Aleksandar Rasic came off the bench to go 4 for 4 on three-pointers in scoring a team-high 16 points for Siena, which improved to 7-2 in the group. Daniel Hackett also was a spark off the bench with 13 points, 4 assists and 8 fouls drawn, while Bobby Brown and David Moss both scored 12 points each and Matt Janning added 10. Fenerbahce dropped to 2-7 in the group despite 22 points from Bojan Bogdanovic and 10 points, 5 rebounds and 7 fouls drawn by Bo McCalebb, who returned to the court on which he starred and won back-to-back Italian league titles in the previous two seasons.

First quarter: Savas, Eze start strong in low post

Fenerbahce’s new coach Ertuglu Erdogan, who took over after Simone Pianigiani resigned, kept the same starting lineup with McCalebb, Bogdanovic, Romain Sato, David Andersen and Oguz Savas. Siena coach Luca Bianchi also sent out the same first five in Brown, Janning, David Moss, Kristjan Kangur and Benjamin Eze. Andersen started the scoring with a fade away jumper and Bogdanovic’s three from the right side pushed the Fenerbahce lead to 0-5. Janning’s jumper got Siena on the board and Brown’s floater in the lane made it 4-7. Bogdanovic’s driving layup restored a five-point cushion before Janning and Moss buried back-to-back three-pointers to give Siena its first lead at 10-9. After 2 McCalebb free throws, Eze evened the game again with a foul shot and scored off a fancy interior pass from Kangur for a 13-11 Montepaschi lead. Both teams’ big men continued their fine early starts with Savaz hitting a jumper and a put-back before Eze knocked down a jumper off the glass to knot it at 15-15. Bogdanovic converted a three-point play for Fenerbahce but was answered by a triple from the right corner by Daniel Hackett and a three-point play by Brown as Siena was ahead 21-18 after one quarter.

Second quarter: Siena force 7 Fenerbahce turnovers in 4:24 span to pull away

Mike Batiste’s three-point play off a pick and roll evened the game at 21-21 and Ilkan Karaman’s jumper made it 21-23. But Siena decided to turn up their defensive pressure and began to get fast break baskets. Hackett, Viktor Sanikidze and Moss scored six straight points for Siena to make it 27-23 and a Fenerbahce timeout. A McCalebb layup and three foul shots by Emir Preldzic brought Fenerbahce to within 29-28. But Tomas Ress nailed a three-pointer followed by a coast-to-coast layup by Sanikidze and a Rasic layup to push the hosts ahead 36-28. Preldzic made one foul shot to slow the run but Moss made two from the stripe and Sanikidze scored again inside for a double-digit lead, 40-29, as Fenerbahce committed seven turnovers in just over four minutes of action. After Rasic nailed a triple, Marco Carraretto followed with two foul shots before Rasic’s jumper at the buzzer to give Siena a 49-35 cushion at the break.

Third quarter: Hackett restores Siena supremacy after 0-11 Fenerbahce run

Moss and Brown nailed three-pointers to start the third quarter and increase the advantage to 19 points – 55-36. But Fenerbahce suddenly woke up with Bogdanovic hitting a layup and adding a three-point play to start an 0-11 run for the guests, including a McCalebb layup, a Savas inside score and two Bogdanovic free throws after a technical foul on Brown to make it 55-47. Kangur split two free throws to snap the 4:28 Siena scoreless drought, but Sato nailed a triple to cut the gap to 56-50. Siena worked hard and was sparked by Hackett. After two offensive rebounds on one possession, Hackett found Moss for an easy dunk. After Bogdanovic free throws made it 58-52, Hackett made a driving layup and four foul shots to push the Montepaschi lead to 64-53. A Kangur free throw increased it to 65-53 after three quarters.

Fourth quarter: Rasic nails three triples in fourth as Siena pulls away

Fenerbahce committed two turnovers to start the fourth and watched as Rasic nail two triples as the Siena advantage grew to 71-53. Bogdanovic got Fenerbahce on the board with a layup to make it 71-55. Fenerbahce committed two more turnovers before McCalebb made two foul shots and Batiste hit a hook to trim the gap to 71-59 with six minutes left. But Brown made a tough score in the lane, Rasic knocked down yet another three-ball and Ress hit a jumper as the cushion was back to 19 points – 78-59 – with four minutes to play. That was essentially the game though Andersen scored a basket and McCalebb and Sato each made two foul shots to cut it to 78-65. But the contest had been decided.

Head Coaches

Montepaschi Siena
"I’m very happy for the win, it was really important for us tonight and we played a great game, against a big team. The road to qualification is still long and tough, because there are many other teams really good that are fighting for this goal. But tonight we are really happy for the win."
Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"It was a tough condition for us, because we never won here in Siena and it was an unusual period for us. We tried to fight tonight, but we found an organized and prepared team in Siena. We played good defense, but we didn’t play very good in offense, with many turnovers and we didn’t share the ball in the right way, and in this condition is very tough to win here. Congratulation to Siena."

Montepaschi Siena
"It was a very difficult game tonight and we are really happy for the win against a great team like Fenerbahce. For us it was great to win this game and we have to try to be ready also for the next ones."
Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"I think that the key to the game was in the second quarter in which they played well, and we made so many mistakes and that made the difference. Now we have the last five games and we will see what we are able to do. "
