The Take

The hottest team in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, Barcelona Regal, looks to wrap up first place in Top 16 Group F when it hosts Spanish League rival Caja Laboral Vitoria on Thursday night. Barca has reeled off nine consecutive Euroleague wins, sits atop its group with a 10-1 record and was the only team to have clinched a playoff berth through 11 Top 16 games. However Vitoria is also fighting for something meaningful. Coach Zan Tabak’s squad is 6-5 and one of five teams battling for the three remaining playoff tickets from the group. Barcelona claimed a 79-90 victory when these teams last met in the Euroleague in January. Pete Mickeal led the way with 23 points against his former team. However Caja Laboral returned the favor earlier this month in the Spanish League behind Nemanja Bjelica.

Barcelona’s greatest strength lately has been its dominant inside play. Center Ante Tomic is enjoying a breakout campaign, while Nate Jawai comes off a brilliant effort and Erazem Lorbek and C.J. Wallace feed off them brilliantly at power forward. With those players locking down the paint, opposing offenses have been suffocated. However Vitoria has experience and confidence against its domestic foe. Center Maciej Lampe posted an impressive double-double against Barca in January and his backup, Tibor Pleiss, has taken several steps forward recently. The versatile duo of Nemanja Bjelica and Milko Bjelica are the ideal counterparts for Lorbek. Vitoria small forward Andres Nocioni has also been hot lately, though he won’t have it easy against Mickeal. Vitoria has many options at guard, with Thomas Heurtel and Omar Cook sharing playmaking duties and former All-Euroleague swingman Fernando San Emeterio and Fabien Causeur doing the same at shooting guard. Another shooter, David Jelinek played 17 minutes in his Euroleague debut last week, and could be in for a bigger role. Barcelona counters with Marcelinho Huertas and Victor Sada at the point and a combination of scoring king Juan Carlos Navarro, Sarunas Jasikevicius and Alex Abrines at shooting guard.

Though both teams have excellent talent in the backcourts, the play of the big men could be the determining factor on Thursday. The visitors need Lampe or Nemanja Bjelica – if not both – to come up big, while keeping Tomic and co. quiet. A low-scoring game favors the hosts, though Barcelona’s attack is nothing to sneeze at either. What is certain is that both teams will take the floor determined and hungry, which sets up an exciting 40-minute battle.

Game Notes

FC Barcelona Regal leads the Euroleague in defense with 67.0 points allowed and 59.9 performance index rating allowed per game. Barcelona also tops the league in performance index rating with an average of 95.0 per game.

Sarunas Jasikevicius is 4 points behind Gianluca Basile for 10th place on the competition’s career scoring charts. Saras enters this week’s game with 2,159 points in his 11 seasons in the Euroleague.

Marcelinho spent two seasons with Caja Laboral between 2009 and 2011, during which he helped the club win the 2010 Spanish League title. He was a teammate there of current Laboral players Fernando San Emeterio and Brad Oleson.

Ante Tomic has scored in double figures in 12 straight Euroleague games.

Pete Mickeal spent two seasons with Caja Laboral between 2007 and 2009, during which he helped the club reach the 2008 Euroleague Final Four and win both the 2008 Spanish League title and the 2009 Spanish King’s Cup.

Caja Laboral Vitoria needs 3 more three-pointers to become the first team to make 2,000 three-pointers.

Maciej Lampe has scored in double figures in nine straight and 13 of his last 14 Euroleague games.

Lampe had one of the best games of his Euroleague career against Barcelona earlier this season with 21 points on 12 of 14 free throw shooting plus 11 rebounds and 3 assists for a career-high 35 index.

Nemanja Bjelica has made at least 1 three-pointer in 12 of his last 13 Euroleague games.

Nemanja Bjelica starred with 9 points and 13 rebounds in leading Vitoria to a 67-69 victory over Barcelona in the Spanish League earlier this month.

Fernando San Emeterio needs 1 more three-pointer to reach the century mark for his career.

Milko Bjelica recorded a career-high 19 points in leading his team at the time, Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius, to an 88-87 victory over Barcelona in December 2010.

Quotes Head Coaches

FC Barcelona Regal
"There is still one goal ahead of us: winning thie group. We have our first chance this week against a top-notch rival. This is an important moment for us. We have the vision that we are doing things well in the Top 16, but there's always a tomorrow and what you did before that is completely useless. We go from positive to negative too fast. Every game is important and we have to get out there with the right mentality."

FC Barcelona Regal
"The team is really eager to welcome Caja Laboral at Palau Blaugrana, because we lost to them two weeks ago in the Spanish League. We also want to seal thefirst place in Group F as soon as possible, and it would be great to finish the Top 16 with no losses."

Head Coaches

FC Barcelona Regal
"We are happy with this win, which means winning our Top 16 group, achieving one of the goals we had this season. It was a good game for fans - good basketball, 83 points despite missing some open shots and making mistakes that could have given us 10-to-15 extra points. We limited Baskonia to a performance index rating of 65 and dished 27 assists. We started the third quarter without a good defensive spirit. Caja Laboral's three opening baskets after the break were in one-on-one actions. When Caja Laboral got close again, we worked well and passed the ball really well, took the lead and got the win. We had a good game from our power forwards, C.J. Wallace, Marko Todorovic and Erazem Lorbek. We have to get ready, avoid losing competitiveness and try to win both [remaining] games. We are eight days away from our next Euroleague game, but our work will be focused on the playoffs."
Laboral Kutxa Vitoria
"We made a lot of mistakes in the end, when we were in the game and had a chance to win. We struggled to control the boards during the game and missed too many layups. Our missed shots cost us 10-to-15 easy points. With this, it is not enough to beat Barcelona at Palau Blaugrana. Barcelona played well today. You need much more to beat Barcelona here. I hope we still have chances to get to the playoffs. Just as today, the intention is to our last two games, at home and in Russia. Rebounds and pick-and-roll with their shooting guards were key. We knew we had to defend that pick-and-roll, but I expected to control the boards much easier."

FC Barcelona Regal
" We made it. We are satisfied with today’s game. We still have games to play. Every game is very important for us to get in top shape for the playoffs. It was a really tight game. The players know each other. Tactically we know each other. We played many games against each other. So no team could escape. I think everybody contributed to this win."
FC Barcelona Regal
"Truth to be told, winning our Top 16 group was one of our goals before the season. We wanted to do a good job and try to get first place. We managed to do it two games before the end of the round. We are happy and looking forward to finding out our opponent. Sometimes things don't go as everyone would like and this is what happened today - the second unit did a good job. Sometimes things roll and everyone adds and it is positive. Some others, you have to take care of the dirty work and the team must respond the way it did today. Defense was the key, especially in the fourth quarter."
Laboral Kutxa Vitoria
"We started good. Then they started scoring and we couldn’t score. The game just ended so it’s hard to say. They played very good tactically. At the end we should have played longer and more under control when we still had a chance to win. We’re still in it and we need to focus on the next game."
Laboral Kutxa Vitoria
"I think this was a very important game for us. They scored some really important shots. We missed some really important shots. We have two more games that are really important for us. I think we have to fight; we have to find ourselves. We have to give everything for the next game. We have to prepare for the next game and have a chance to win the next game. "
