The Take

Two proud-franchises battle for pride knowing that they will not play in the playoffs this season. Both FC Barcelona Lassa and Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv defeated playoff-bound teams last week and will surely give a strong effort again. Injuries have savaged both teams’ rosters this season, but Barcelona (11-17) has been able to rely on its veteran guards Tyrese Rice (13.1 ppg. 5.0 apg.) and Petteri Koponen (10.2 ppg.), the first of whom helped Maccabi to the 2014 EuroLeague crown. For Maccabi (10-18), forwards Victor Rudd (9.8 ppg.) and Devin Smith (9.6 ppg.) have stepped up, while recent signing Diamon Simpson (10.0 ppg.) has also provided power inside. With guards Yogev Ohayon, D.J. Seeley and Andrew Goudelock injured, Gal Mekel will be the lone point guard in uniform for Maccabi in Barcelona. While Maccabi is an above-average offensive team, it has allowed the second-most points (84.0) per game this season. Barcelona has the lowest-ranked offense (71.4 ppg.), but allows only 75.1 points per game. Will Maccabi be able to impose a higher-scoring game to its liking? That could be the deciding factor on Thursday.

Head Coaches

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
FC Barcelona Lassa
"Somehow we have to be motivated to play hard, to win the game and to improve our performances. This is our goal now, we want to play better and hard in these last two EuroLeague games. After that we'll focus on the Spanish League. We have to be focused to win against Maccabi."
BAGATSKIS, AINARS
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"We need to finish the EuroLeague season in the best possible way. We're very injured and will prepare our strategy based on who is able to play. We need to save energy for our guards as we currently have only Mekel and Sylvan Landesberg and with no other alternatives, Victor Rudd will also serve as a guard. The bigs will have to help them, especially on defense."

Players

RICE, TYRESE
FC Barcelona Lassa
"It's a tough situation. Nobody likes to look at the playoffs from the outside, but we have to do what we have to do. We have to keep playing hard and play these remaining games and focus on the Spanish League."
MEKEL, GAL
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"We always want to win and don't care that the game in Barcelona can't get us into the playoffs. We have a very short roster, but we will not use that as an excuse and are coing to play strong and win. We had a good momentum following the wins in the derby and against Fenerbahce but it was somewhat stopped after the losses to Zalgiris and Holon so we want to get back to winning ways to finish the EuroLeague season and ahead of the last stretch in the Israeli league."
