The Take

Olympiacos will know before it hosts already-qualified CSKA if it has been eliminated or not. The only hope for Olympiacos is if Zalgiris, Laboral and Madrid all win already on Thursday. CSKA knows it will finish in first place with a win or if Laboral loses a day earlier. CSKA is set to arrive at the Peace and Friendship Stadium as the Top 16 leader in index rating (105.6), scoring (92.3 ppg.) and three-point accuracy (42.7%), while ranking second in three-pointers made (10.5 per game) and assists (19.5 apg.). Most of that has to do with star duo of Nando De Colo and former Olympiacos playmaker Milos Teodosic, the two best scorers in the league, who have been unstoppable all season. Teodosic and Aaron Jackson must try to set a high game tempo against Vangelis Mantzaris and Darius Johnson-Odom in one of the main keys to this game. Olympiacos has a range of hard-nosed defenders to go against De Colo, including Daniel Hackett, D.J. Strawberry and Mantzaris. CSKA must find the way to slow Olympiacos leader Vassilis Spanoulis, and it relies on Cory Higgins and Vitaly Fridzon to do so. Ioannis Papapetrou and Kostas Papanikolaou must use their size and aggressiveness against Nikita Kurbanov, who has been in great shape recently. The battle in the paint will be critical, as Kyle Hines and Andrey Vorontsevich will see most of the playing time under the rims for CSKA, which is still without Joel Freeland and Victor Khryapa. Pavel Korobkov and Demetris Nichols will also play a key role for CSKA, especially on defense, against Olympiacos star forward Georgios Printezis. Hakim Warrick, Othello Hunter and Nikola Milutinov will be ready to play physical in the paint. Olympiacos has a solid 9-2 record at home this season, but CSKA has been competitive everywhere and will be ready for the challenge.

Game Notes

Olympiacos Piraeus

Olympiacos defeated CSKA Moscow 61-62 in the 2012 Euroleague Championship Game, which went down as an instant classic. The Reds came from 19 down in the third quarter to win on Georgios Printezis’s floater with 0.7 seconds left.

Vassilis Spanoulis scored 11 fourth-quarter points to lead Olympiacos back from a 9-point deficit with four minutes remaining for a 68-70 victory over CSKA in the semifinals at last season’s Final Four in Madrid.

Coach Giannis Sfairopoulos was an assistant coach with CSKA Moscow during the 2011-12 season, during which CSKA reached the Euroleague championship game, but lost to Olympiacos. Four current CSKA players remain from that squad.

Spanoulis is 1 steal shy of becoming the 13th player in competition history with 200 career steals.

Spanoulis needs 33 more points to become just the second person in competition history to reach 3,000 career points.

Matt Lojeski needs 3 more three-pointers to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.

Daniel Hackett has made 11 consecutive free throws in Euroleague games.

Georgios Printezis was a teammate of CSKA center Joel Freeland for parts of two seasons at Unicaja Malaga between 2009 and 2011.

Nikola Milutinov was a teammate of CSKA star MilosTeodosic on the Serbian national team, which reached the semifinal at EuroBasket 2015 last summer.

Darius Johnson-Odom was a teammate of CSKA forward Nikita Kurbanov at Spartak St. Petersburg during the 2012-13 season.

Ioannis Papapetrou has made at least 1 three-pointer in each of his last five Euroleague games.

De Colo has made 19 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action. Having made 92.4% of his free throws, he is the most accurate free throw shooter in Euroleague history.

Milos Teodosic spent four seasons with Olympiacos early in his career between 2007 and 2011. He won the 2010 Euroleague MVP, helped the Reds to a pair of Final Four appearances and was a teammate of current Olympiacos players Vassilis Spanoulis and Georgios Printezis.

Teodosic has made multiple three-pointers in each of his last 14 Euroleague games. Teodosic has made at least 1 three-pointer in 45 of his last 46 Euroleague games.

Teodosic needs 3 more three-pointers to catch retired Jaka Lakovic for third place on the list of most three-pointers made in competition history. Teodosic enters this week’s game with 378 career threes.

Teodosic has scored in double figures in each of his last 13 Euroleague games.

Teodosic has made 10 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Cory Higgins is the league leader in three-point accuracy at 55.1%. He has made 27 of 49 threes this season.

Kyle Hines spent two seasons with Olympiacos from 2011 through 2013 and helped the Reds win back-to-back Euroleague titles. He was a teammate there of three current Olympiacos players: Vassilis Spanoulis, Georgios Printezis and Vaneglis Mantzaris.

Kyle Hines has 139 career blocked shots and with his next rejection will tie Denis Marconato for seventh place on the Euroleague career list.

Andrey Vorontsevich has made at least 1 three-pointer in each of his last six Euroleague games.

Quotes Head Coaches

SFAIROPOULOS, GIANNIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"It is the last game of the Top 16 and we face one of the big favourites to win the Euroleague. Even if the qualification is not in our hands anymore, we will play with all of our strength against CSKA. We want to have maximum concentration and energy in this game, to remain committed to the plan that we put together and close the Top 16 with a win."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"We play for the first spot in our group. We have some difficulties and Olympiacos still has chances to qualify. They are an aggressive team and they are even more aggressive defensively at home, stats confirm it. They definitely have quality, they played in three previous final games of Euroleague. So we expect it to be a fight, and we will try hard to get the win."

Players

NICHOLS, DEMETRIS
CSKA Moscow
"We know how important this game may be for Olympiacos as they are still fighting for a playoff spot. We have to match their intensity. The teams know each other well, we meet several times during past seasons. It will be a fight. We have to execute our game plan well to come away with the victory."

De Colo's late free throws lead CSKA to road win

Johnson-Odom split free throws and a three-pointer by Hackett capped a 14-0 run and put Olympiacos back in charge, 36-33. Head Coaches

SFAIROPOULOS, GIANNIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"It is a difficult moment, because Olympiacos is out of the playoffs. We are very sorry for this, but since the season is still on, it is not the right time to analyze the reasons. We had a lot of injuries and didn't manage to keep our balance. The system was not fair because we finished first in the regular season and had a very tough group in the Top 16. Next year the system will be more fair and the teams will have the opportunity to show their value. Olympiacos is a great team with a lot of success and we will keep fighting, as we did it tonight against a team which is the favorite to win it all. We trust our team and I don't think that there is a dispute. Regarding myself I feel very proud to be here and I am doing my job the best possible way. I would like to thank the fans for their support, which has been emotional."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"I have to congratulate my team because we advanced to the playoffs with the home-court advantage. The team has big character and proved it in a very tough group, where seven teams gave a big fight for the four spots, while Zalgiris Kaunas played a major role with its victories. Olympiacos had a lot of misfortune this season, but their people know much better why they didn't make it to the playoffs. I am not a prophet to make predictions on the four teams that will make the Final Four, but we are expecting big battles. Nothing is offered for granted: you have to fight and give your best in every game. We are playing good basketball and this is the way we have to go up to the end."

Players

MANTZARIS, VANGELIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"There is a disappointment after what happened this season. It is not possible to bring the time back, so we have to look forward and change our mindset. It is not possible to win forever and now our obligation is to win the Greek championship. We made a lot of mistakes that brought us here. We have to work together and be ready for the playoffs in the domestic league."
LOJESKI, MATT
Olympiacos Piraeus
"I am very happy to be back to action and especially in front of this crowd after three months. I want to play the big games but unfortunately I was unable to do so in the Top 16. Now we have to make everything possible in order to win the Greek championship, which is our last goal of this season."
SPANOULIS, VASSILIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"We are disappointed because we didn't make it to the playoffs. It is strange, because Olympiacos is not used to such a situation. We are a team that achieved a lot of miracles in the last years and now we are out: but this is sports. Now we have to improve our game and avoid mistakes in order to reach our target and win the Greek championship. We suffered some unexpected losses in the Top 16 and when a failure happens, everybody is involved and has his own responsibility. I don't like excuses and talk about injuries or whatever, because we have a situation to handle and bounce back. Tonight we played for our pride and our history, because Olympiacos is a big club. We tried to win it, but it didn't happen. On behalf of the whole team I want to thank our fans who came tonight and pushed us on a unique way. Το me this support counts more than a victory."
HINES, KYLE
CSKA Moscow
"We did it and this makes us very happy. We had a tough group, maybe the toughest in the Euroleague history and to be first is a great success. Crvena Zvezda Belgrade is a difficult opponent with athletic players and we have to pay a lot of attention. Olympiacos is always a very strong team. I had a great time with them and I feel perfect now in CSKA Moscow. I won titles with Olympiacos and I will have this team always in my heart."
DE COLO, NANDO
CSKA Moscow
"We knew that even when they were out of chances to advance, it would be a tough game. They were going to play for the fans. I think tonight is a good win because we played strong, like our coach wants."
